mac, classes, the next book
Hi there. Some great questions, ladies! I'll take on a few at a time ...
[ WHY MAC? ]
I have been a Mac user for almost 3 years and, in my case, it's true what they say: "Once you go Mac, you never go back." In response to the "URGENT!!!" question that was asked, there are so many reasons why I prefer Mac over PC. I'm no "techie" but I've come to appreciate the great qualities found in Mac products. Instead of making this blog entry super long, I'm just going to send you (and your husband, since you mentioned that it's HIM you need to convince) to this list for the top 15 reasons why Mac is fabulous. Good luck with your purchase this weekend!
PS - My brother (a.k.a. big-time techie) has an archive of Mac Tips that can be really helpful for Mac users. This is something that he did for quite a while (in his spare time) and although it's not currently maintained, the tips are totally relevant.
[ MY CLASSES ]
I don't teach much locally. However, I can tell you where I'll be teaching this year:
June 14-16: Anaheim, CA (CKU)
August 23-25: Nashville, TN (CKU)
September 13-15: Phoenix, AZ (CKC)
October 11-13: Orlando, FL (CKU)
October 19-20: Kansa City, KS (CKC)
You can find more information here. Just click on Conventions (CKC) and Creating Keepsakes University (CKU) to get the scoop. Incidentally, registration for CKU-Nashville launches TODAY.
[ MY NEXT BOOK ]
Yes, I do have another book coming out and yes, it is a sketch-based book. This one is a compilation of all my sketches from books & magazines over the past 5 years. It'll be spiral-bound in a cute, smaller size and very user-friendly. So almost 200 sketches in one place (yay for that) but the added bonus is that I worked for months and months on creating a brand-new, fresh, current layout to accompany every single sketch. All visuals in this book are by me, which is unique to my other Sketches books.

This is a picture of one of my shipments of layouts for the book. Holy nervous to ship, Batman! You have to have a lot of faith in UPS when you ship something like this.
I'll let you know when the book is available for pre-ordering.

I can't wait for your new book. I have the first 2 and took them to Staples to be spiral bound together. Any ideas when it'll be released?
Can't wait for the book...
Hey sis! I thought I would add my 2 cents here, and reiterate that Macs (while good for many things) are incredible for design in general. Whether you are making a family newsletter or organizing your digital pictures to use for scrapbooking, you will find doing any of this is much more pleasing on a Mac compared to a PC. When your readers have a chance, they should really take a minute and check out the "Get a Mac" ads on the link in your blog entry. Most people find them really funny because they can sympathize with them.
Bottom line: I (occassionally) use a PC because I have to. I use a Mac because I want to.
Becky- I'm so excited to hear about your upcoming book and even more excited to hear that there are 200 Becky Higgins layouts included in it....can't wait!!!
I am so excited to see your blog up and running! I have been a huge fan for YEARS!! I have all your sketches printed out on my desk, and all your books on my shelf. You are definitely an inspiration. Thanks for sharing your talents with us.
And Kevin, does Apple pay you for all that?? LOL

Interesting that you bring up switching to a Mac. I just made the switch to an iMac. Do you use Photoshop (or PS Elements) with the Mac? Not iPhoto, right? I'm going to look over the tips you posted to see if there is anything I am missing with my new purchase. Thanks for the links.
I am really enjoying your blog, Becky. I appreciate your time that you take to read people's questions and try to answer them all ( know that you get { A LOT } ).
I love your recipes that you are sharing. Great devil egg recipe!!
I can't wait for your new book to be released.
Happy Thursday!!
Linda
Yay for a new book! Maybe you'll come back to New Zealand with it?
nicky hurt... no, but they should! I have no association with Apple except that I am a user.
Becky ~ This is my first visit to your blog (the first of many, I'm sure!) and I'm really excited to hear about your upcoming book. I'm a huge fan of your sketches and have been for a long time! I also appreciated the Mac review. My husband and I have decided to make a Mac our next computer purchase. It's nice to hear other people back up our decision! :) Keep up the great work! ~Heather
This is exciting stuff! Can't wait for the book to come out. Thanks for the Mac tips. I have been a mac user for nearly 7 years and am very faithful and loyal. Have a great day!
I just wanted to say a big thank you for answering my question so promptly! And thank you Kevin for posting a comment because I showed it to my husband and the fact that it was from a guy (plus your "bottom line" wording) was the selling point! I am proud to announce that in 2-3 business days I will be a Mac owner/user! And just a little note for anyone that is looking at purchasing a Mac soon, they are running a little promotion for $100 off a printer. I jumped at the chance to upgrade, but the printer ended up being free! Thanks Becky (and Kevin)! Now...on to the new camera! Hmmm...I'm thinking the Canon SD900. Any thoughts (our selling lines Kevin)?!

"the candlands".... I will be completely honest and upfront here, and will preface my comments by letting you know that I am partial to the Canon line (and no, I don't get paid for saying that). I've been shooting digital longer than digital has been mainstream, and I've been through the various brands. At one point, I liked Olympus better, but their optics have since gone downhill. Hence my preference with Canon.
If you are looking for something that you can throw in your purse or bag, but still has a great feature-set and good color-accuracy, the SD900 is a great way to go. It does sport a 10 MegaPixel sensor, so you can blow them up pretty big without having pixelation rear it's ugly head.
A great site that I use quite often for reviewing cameras of all kinds is www.dpreview.com. You can choose several cameras (of various brands) and compare the features and prices to make sure you are making a good decision. Keep in mind, everyone is usually biased one way or another. Take advice for what it's worth. People have different objectives when purchasing electronics.
Good luck!
Oh Becky- I am going to pray that your layouts make it. I think they should hire someone to personally fly down and pick them up and either drive them back or fly them back. They are worth more than gold. You are one brave woman of faith! Can't wait for the new book.
Oh my word - I'm so excited about your book!!!
So are you saying that it is Vol. 1 and 2 of your Sketches book PLUS all the CK mag sketches? And 200 new layouts? I'm gonna flip.
Woo-hoo! Thank you for sharing!
YEAH!! I'm just reading your old entries and I cannot wait. As a matter of fact, the only layout I've ever had published was in your Sketches 2 book... can't wait!
