submit your questions

You guys have some great questions and I'd love to address as many of them as I can get to. So here's a place to formally submit whatever your questions are. I may not be able to answer every single one, and it will undoubtedly take some time to answer them (a little here, a little there with my blog entries), but I'll do my best. Simply click on the green-colored word "comments" below and ask away.

Yeah... I could have a list of 100 questions for you!! I was wondering if there was any way you had thought about publishing your kids birthday pages that you have done. I have been seeing them on the creating keepsakes movies and they are so cute! Or is there anyway to post them on here? I love your recipe ideas too!

I'm so excited you have a blog. I look at your column in CK even before I get it in the house from the mailbox! I know you touched on this in a recent issue of CK - how do you resize your photos using Photoshop? I'm having trouble and am hoping you can provide some more detail on exactly how you do it. Thank you!

I am curious about your next book. I'd also love to see your scrap room. How do you know what layouts to go back to finish in your system (just putting pics, and paper in the albums?

Let me start off by saying I'm so glad you are blogging now!!!
Several years ago Creating Keepsakes did and entire article on you and your scrapbook room. I think it was 5 or 6 years ago. Anyway I can't find my copy and I have moved into a home and I'm wanting to duplicate your scrapbook space. Can you share with me what issue it was in and if so can order it a copy? Or can you share your space with us? Have you changed it any since that issue ran? I remember I loved the way you had it organized.
Thanks! Julie

Hi Becky, Out of all of scrappers
in the magazine, your style is the
closest to my style. I love how your pages look uncluttered yet creative and elegant, even though
they might not be a formal subject.
Do you have a formula where you only put 1 or 2 embellishments or do try to stay with coordinating papers and embellishments. Do you
always sketch a page out first or
do you ever sit down and stare at
page until you figure out where to
start?

You are so awesome to take time to answer questions. Plus you have such great ideas on so many scrapbooking topics!

I've noticed in the last couple CK issues in your sketches column you've had cards, and I am wondering how you print color on color and get it to look right?(The card with green writing on dark brown paper is in my mind right now.)

Also, I would love it if you would share any ideas on Christmas cards...past ones you have made, ideas for the future...

I would love it if you would update us on all of your old friends and your family. You have done layouts about various people in the past and it is fun to see them in the mags and see their pix, etc. How are they all doing? (e.g. Kennedy's, Williams, etc.) How is your extended family? I love your books and I have them all!

Hi Becky!
I have another question for you. I have recently been organizing my photos. I have many wallet size, 5x7's, and other various sizes of studio photos. (school pictures, family pictures, etc.) These pictures are not the ones sent at Christmas, they are sent to me throughout the year. I obviously can not frame each one of these photos given to me so I was just wondering how you organize or scrap these types of photos. Usually when I do a layout, there's a theme such as an Easter layout, or Birthday layouts. Since these photos don't have a theme, I'm just not sure how to organize them or incorporate them into my layouts. I definitely want to honor my friends and family by displaying the photos given to me. I'm just curious as to how you handle these types of photos.

Thank You
Lisa

So back on March 9th, Lisa B. posted something on her blog about your bathroom being organized. Here is what I had to say: "I knew I liked that Becky Higgins! My family has always teased that I orgnaize, clean, and label everything I can get my hands on. Now I don't have to be ashamed when people tease me about my bathroom...because I'm not the only one!" And then I posted a link for the picture of my guest bathroom that stores our stock up. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y68/nayskers/Picture585.jpg
I know I'm nuts but I refuse to buy things if they won't have a designated spot! What I'd like is for you to share pictures of your organizing quirks! And like the other girls requests, post your new scrapbook room! Oh and one more thing. Can you pass the word along to CK that you should teach a class at the Phoenix Convention about Photoshop and how to crop pictures. You walked me and a friend through it a year ago at the Mesa Convention and it literally changed my idea of pictures and the possibilities! Thanks!

Becky,
I'm just wondering how you find the time to do everything that you do! I remember seeing one of your calendar pages in CK and thinking how busy your life must be (and that was when you only had one child!). What do you do in your spare time - if you have any (besides scrapbooking!)? You are such an inspiration!

Hi Becky!
So glad you're blogging!!
I am a huge fan of your work.
It's so classic and clean.
Very timeless. I love that.

My question is...
When you make sketches, are they based on layouts already completed or do you just sit down and start drawing? Also, do you actually use your own sketches very often, outside of your CK column?

Thanks!

I have 2 questions:

2-What do you do outside of scrapbooking to keep your creative batteries charged up?

Thanks!

Hi Becky!

I was just in AZ visiting my sister -- man, as a MD girl, AZ was QUITE the change! ROFL! Do you like it there? Where do you teach?

Another blogger mentioned your calendar page -- and I too remember that! I'd love to hear the answer to her question! =)

Also, along the lines of being a "celeb" scrapper -- are you ever worried or concerned about how widely you are recognized (or your children?)

Have a great day!

Hi Becky,

Thanks for the opportunity to answer our questions!

What do you do with the photos that don't make it into your scrapbooks? Do you print them out and put them in photo albums/boxes, burn them on cds or are they just kept in your computer? The fear of a computer or back-up drive crashing and losing our photos terrifies me. What do you find is the best way to manage your photos, they accumulate so quickly!

Also, I read "Celebrate Easter with Becky Higgins" on the CK website, it says that it appeared in April 2007 but it wasn't in my copy of the magazine. Are there often additional articles posted online that are not in the magazine?

First off...thanks for giving us the opportunity to ask questions.

Question: Since you scrapbook as a career and personally, How do you prioritize what is the most important pics/events to scrap??

Since I have a pre-schooler and a baby, I am always going through the stash seeing what is more important to me to scrap now and record for my children and family(I know some pics may never be scrapped b/c of time)

Also, the question from the lady that ask about your fav. restaurants was a great one.....Chick-Fil-A wins here for fav. fast food!!

Thanks. Emily J.

URGENT!!! I know I posted last night, but I realized this morning that I wanted to ask you one more question. A few years ago when you did Breakfast w/ Becky at CKC Mesa you asked if anyone wasn't digital. To my horror I was the only one. You sold me on going digital. Now, I need you to sell me on converting to a Mac! I need ammo for when my husband asks why I want a Mac! We are making the purchase this weekend so any pros/cons would be appreciated! Thanks!

I noticed some of your published pages are not of your family. Do you scrap your friends’/families’ albums for them?

In an earlier blog you said, “…what I want to be sure to get in the scrapbooks, and what's really not all that important.” It seems that the style now is to scrap the every day and some people are literally scrapping the everyday. What have you learned over the years that are important to include and others that are just not as important?

Do you create the exact same page for holidays/special events in all of your children’s scrapbooks as well as the family scrapbook? I met a woman who made 3 of the exact same layouts (one for family album and 1 each for her 2 children). I understood why she did it but I just hesitate at the thought of doing it.

Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions!

Hi, Becky! I love your pages, super cute & clean!

My questions are:

I read that you have the same album/color for your family albums. Did you continue using the same album/color for your son's scrapbooks? Also, did you choose to use Making Memories for your daughter's albums?

You created a Allgaier Family alubm a while back. Very cute & simple. Here's the link. http://www.creatingkeepsakes.com/images/ftp_images/ck/downloads/FamHist-allgaier.pdf I have been searching high and low for the album and alpha stamps you used on it. Could you tell me the brand? I would be forever grateful!!

Last, do you update photos in albums such as the above mentioned as adults/children get older or do you just leave it as is?

Thanks!!! Stacey

Becky,

Your willingness to answer questions is so wonderful. Thank you! I wondered how you determine which spread stays in your family albums or goes into your individual children's albums? Do you repeat topics (like Halloween) for each child or do you make one general spread in the family album? I am finding scrapbooking for two children now can be overwhelming. Just curious how you handle this. Thanks.

This is exactly what I'm struggling with...a million ideas but which pages will I be most grateful for in 10 years, in 20? Please share more of what you've learned is most important.

Thanks!

With juggling a full-time job, trying to be a good mom and wife, I find it very hard to find time to scrapbook and cardmaker during the week or weekend.

How do you find time to juggle your busy career and wife/mother, Becky, to scrapbook/papercraft?

I feel so overwhelmed at times that I loose my desire to scrapbook.

Becky-
I absolutely love your layouts. I am a working mom of 3 little boys. I started scrapping when our youngest son was born. Since then, I am trying to go back and scrap important milestones for our older sons. The dilema that I'm having id that the older two are identical twins. Do you have any tips for scrapbooking twins? I want to make sure their individual personalities shine through.
Thanks so much. I am so happy to see this blog! :)

Becky,
Thanks for posting the birthday layout! It is so cute! I have one more question for you....do you ever scrapbook portrait pictures? I have my kids pictures taken at Penney's portrait studio all the time, and I am looking for new ways to scrapbook those kind of pics! I also think you should make a Christmas book to sell someday...with your card layout/family pic idea, the pages of pics from your friends that come included in Christmas cards, etc. I would love that! Thanks for sharing your memories and photos with all of us. I love how you scrapbook many pictures, not just one on a page. I have been able to stay caught up scrapbooking (having four kids in five years and a husband in med. school!!) because of you and your sketches. Keep up the great work and I look forward to your new book! Thanks so much!!!

Hi Becky! I am so excited to see this blog. I can't wait to see how it evolves!

Do you have any advice for people who want to try to get scrapbook pages published? I want to start submitting pages to magazines, but a problem I am running into is that I can't identify the maker(s) of a lot of the products in my "stash". Some of the papers are not marked by the maker, and I have no clue who made most of the brads or ribbons that I have. They are stored by color and not by maker, and after the packages are opened, who knows where they came froM? But I don't want to throw away my stash, just to buy new stuff that I can identify. Any advice?

1. I read that you now print pictures as you scrap them and I would like to know how organise pictures that you want to scrapbook (do you use tags?) and the ideas that you have for the pictures. I have tried this approach before and I really like pre-planning my pages but I seem to lose track of the photos if I don't get them printed at the time that I edit them.

2. Also do you print your journalling and add it to the page kit or do you sometimes assemble the page and then print out the journalling. I seem to have a stack of pages waiting for the journalling.

It is so great your have a blog and we can ask you questions, back in 2003 I had to fly from Sydney to meet you to ask questions like this :)

I'm looking forward to taking your class at the next Anaheim CKU.

Hi Becky,
First of all I would like to say that I absolutely LOVE your work. Your column is the first I turn to every month from the CK mag. I am sooo glad that you are accepting questions.
I'm probably one of the last to still not go digital. But I don't really understand how to do it and I'm pretty familiar with computers and internet.
My first basic digital question is don't you waste a TON of ink printing out an entire page in the background color that you want? Isn't it just cheaper to buy the better quality cardstock in the color you want? Also if your whole layout is digital how can you print out the entire layout on 1 sheet? For example: if I have 3 pics and a journaling block with some embellishments. Do I have to print out everything separately (pics on glossy paper, journaling block on cardstock, etc..)? This is the part that has me very confused because I feel like if I have to print it out separetly isn't it better to just go and buy the pre-printed paper and adhere to your layout?
I know it's a lot of questions. Can't wait to see your response.
Thank you so much!!!
Susy
