youth & journal writing

Last night I had about 40 teenagers from church in my house, along with about 10 youth leaders. We do this once a month on a Sunday for all the youth in our congregation. It's always a different topic, a different speaker, and a different house. Always a great experience. I love being with the youth.

So I did a little presentation on the importance of keeping personal records, and specifically focused on keeping a journal. Didn't even bring up scrapbooking, actually. Each person got one of these little booklets and they worked on filling out the information for about a half hour.

Not super in-depth stuff. Just some tidbits about their life right now. A little record of who they are at this point in time. And possibly stuff they haven't recorded ... at least not lately. And it's something they could actually take home with them instead of just "talking" about writing.

Anyway, it's a simple little project and in case you wanted to do something like this for your kids or yourself, here's what I included on the inside pages. Just click on the image & it'll go really big on your monitor.

The front cover (that green block) is a place for them to put a current picture. All of the paper (7Gypsies) is cut to be 5" x 8" and then the top is another piece of paper that is 5" x 4" and then folded in half. It's all held together with 2 staples. Super easy. Great little activity for kids with "down time" before school's back in session next month (for many families).

Hey Becky! I love this idea and I'm really impressed that you're working with the youth of your church. I'm a Christian Ed director and I teach Confirmation class. I make journals for all the kids, but I've only done blank pages. This is a neat idea! Thanks for sharing...

Very cool...I've kept a personal journal since I was 9, and I'm a big believer in it. So fun to see you on Sunday! :) Dina Wakley (http://dinastamps.typepad.com)

Thanks for the idea! I'm sure the YM/YW loved it! I made journals with the YW last year before school started along with magnets (from cear pebbles) for their lockers, but I love the idea of having something for them to "fill-out" because then they know what to write about. So fun!

Hi Becky! Love the journaling idea. I think I might try to do something like this for myself once a year. It would be interesting to read through them all if I get to be 80. :o) I had a quick question for you. I placed an order for the Genesis trimmer in March of 2006, right after I got home from Cruisin' with Becky. :o) So fun to meet you and take your classes. Anyway, I can't seem to get a hold of Bonnie. The email on her website doesn't seem to be working and she doesn't seem to be returning her messages. Just wondering if you knew a different email address or if you knew what was happening with all that. I know that they are in transition with the changing of ownership and all. Thought you might be able to help. Thanks!

What a great activity to do with the youth. I think I need to do it for myself and my children. That would be a fun Family Home Evening.

Becky - great idea, as always! Love the questions on each page. I once found something similar to this that I had done when I was a youth and looking at it, I just laughed because I was so surprised as an adult what I thought was important as a youth. What fonts did you use? They really do make it look professionally done. Love the look! --Kristin "Taco Salad" Vinson

Hello Becky,

What a lovely idea. Do you have ideas like that for smaller children like your son Porter. Maybe something he made. I am looking for ideas that can be used with smaller children. So if you have some please share them with me/us.
