welcome back, fall.

I get "Fall Fever" every year, without fail. The fact that it's below 100 degrees in the middle of the afternoon here in Arizona, actually FEELS cool. I know that sounds strange or even made-up to anyone outside of this area, but I'm totally serious. We even opened up a couple doors yesterday morning (it was in the 70s) to let a cool breeze through the house. It was GLORIOUS.

That is, of course, until I saw ... Mr. Scorpion in the middle of our office floor! But wait. It's okay. He wasn't moving.

I was cautious, but not freaking out. Until David poked at it's "dead" body to make sure it really was dead. Oh NO. No, no, no. Mr. Scorpion was totally FAKING dead and started threatening David with a little attitude.

At this point, I'm up on a chair making some sort of squealing noises, which causes Porter & Claire to come running in and check out what all the excitement was about. Once Porter began laughing at me, I calmed down a little bit, got some high tech supplies for David (plastic cup, rubbing alcohol, and a lighter) and we all went outside for an exciting show of destroying that nasty little imposter.

And so ... our doors are shut now. In case you were wondering.

[ books to give away! ]

So I bet you're wondering who gets a free copy of my new book? I was going to give 2 copies away but just reading all that YOU are grateful for, made me MORE grateful, and so I felt more generous. Congratulations to the following friends:

1. "Brooke", who recently had car problems & wasn't sure she could send enroll her child in pre-school (but she can, so that's great!).
2. "pholub", who is finally of Tamoxifin for breast cancer (so happy for you).
3. "familywithfivekids", who was singing Wicked songs outloud & doesn't seem to think she can carry a tune (who cares, right?).
4. "cathy.gray", who is celebrating her husband's 50th birthday today (and 20 years of marriage with him - congratulations!)
5. "Natalie", who just miscarried the other day and had the roughest day of her life (you are in my prayers; I wish I could give you a hug).

Reading through your blessings uplifts and inspires me. THANK YOU for that.

Ladies, e-mail me (bhiggins@ckmedia.com) and let me know where you'd like me to ship your book. : )

We live in Surprise and found a scorpion yesterday, too, and it was 4 inches long!!! Thankfully it was DEAD (really dead!!) and was outside our door. I always pick up scorpions around our house with bbq tongs-- big help-- then squish the heck out of them to make sure they are REALLY dead!

Oh my heavens! I can just see Porter laughing at you and YOU up on a chair! I would be too, sister!

Funny, I was thinking THE SAME THING a few days ago when it dropped below 100 ... "feels like fall". We're crazy Arizonians! ;)

See you tonight.

I'm so glad that we don't get scorpions down here in our section of the valley. (Not in AZ. but still in the desert) I can handle the cockroaches and barely tolerate the occasional black widow but I don't know what I'd do with a scorpion!

That's hilarious, Becky--especially since the little booger wasn't in my house!!! Here's a totally unrelated question. Where do you buy most of your clothes? I love your style of clothing--you like to layer things without looking bulky. Thanks for the info!!! I hate to clothes shop and I'm getting to go on a cruise this fall so I have to get some stuff. Wahhh! ha.ha.

I seriously would have ran out of the room, locked my dogs in there with it until they ate it. That is the freakiest thing I've ever heard! You are alot braver than I am. Okay, so it was 85 degrees today and I was DIEING (go ahead, correct my spelling) of heat! Last week it was in the 60's and it was wonderful. The leaves are changing all their brilliant yellows, oranges, and reds and I just think, "I wish fall could last forever." Good thing I can visit you in January when I'm thinking, "I hate Cleveland and it's gloomy snowy days!"

Becky,
Here in North Eastern Ohio, we don't get scorpions (thank the Lord for that!!), but I'm sure you already know that - when your layouts started including places that I knew locally, I realized you were no longer living in AZ, but were up in our neck of the woods, and now I see you've moved back. Anyhow, we do get other creatures, and one day, a squirrel (who must have been lounging on the top of our chimney), came crashing into our fireplace. I was freaking out, and on a chair too, after I heard him come clicking across our bathroom floor (we don't have pets, so I knew that sound wasn't good!). Fortunately, at the time, my husband worked just across the street. I called (from my perch on the chair), got his secretary, and explained the situation to her. She pulled him out of a meeting and told him he had to go home immediately. haha Can you believe he actually had me help him scare that squirrel out of the house. I was trembling, holding the broom to shoo him out of the house. Fortunately, he went without a fight, and we have since remodeled the room that had the open fireplace, so no more squirrels (I hope). I still get tense when I think of that story. I'm so glad we don't have scorpions in this area!!

I don't know if it's true but I heard that if you put lavendar by the window they won't come in. I don't know if they don't like the smell or what but maybe worth a try. I'm so grateful we don't have scorpions in Oregon. I'd just die. Spiders are bad enough... :) Melissa

I just wanted to post and tell Natalie that it will get better. I lost a twin when I was pregnant and it's a heartbreaking experience. If she wants someone other than family to talk to she can email me or leave a message on my blog. Thanks for letting everyone post their most grateful moments. I'm late, but I'm grateful for my daughter. I'm just glad that I was able to go on and carry her to 36 weeks before she was born. I always say no matter how horrible everything happens for a reason. God has a plan for you Natalie!

Oh and about the scorpion I would have just passed out right then and there. I have a hard enough time with the spiders here in the midwest. Talk to you later Becky!!

Oh my heck, I can relate, but with a mouse instead of a scorpion, LOL! At least it was a scorpion and not a rattle snake, eeeeeewwwww!

BTW: I bought your new book last week. It is FANTASTIC!

Hugs,

Steph:)

Hi Becky

Thank you! I enjoyed reading everyone's blessings also - reminds us how lucky we really are! I've decided to ask my children what they were grateful for each night during our devotional time! It is fun to hear what they have to say! So sweet!

The scorpion does not sound like fun! I don't like creepy crawly critters!!

Have a great Fall!

AUGH!! The same thing happened to me the other day, only with a spider. It was on our piano, and it LIFTED A LEG AT ME!! I swear, it was waving its little leg right at me. My husband wasn't home, so I called him and screamed into the phone while I disposed of the thing. I didn't have a plastic cup, so I used a glass one to cover it up and take him outside. I didn't want to be inhumane, and let it just fry in the sunshine, so I made the decision to squash it with my foot. I knew I needed to put down the glass carefully and stomp the spider hard, but I got so caught up in the moment that I just did both hard and shattered the glass -- but at least I got the spider!
