handprint tradition
Some of you have tradition-related goals for this year. I love that. It's one of my goals as well. Thought I'd share one of our favorite family traditions, which we started when Porter was a baby. For each child's birthday we do handprints on canvas. This is Porter's collection.

How to do it: Paint the base first (regular acrylic paint that you can find at the craft store), then paint his/her hand with a different color of paint. Very carefully help them press their hand down on the canvas, pressing on each part of the hand and every finger. Then on the count of three, we lift the hand off the canvas quickly - like taking off a bandaid. Of course it's much easier as your kids get older. Trying to get a one-year-old to spread their fingers, etc. is no easy task.
I totally have a vision of this collage of handprints on our kids' walls when they're older. For now, we have them on a shelf in the playroom and they're seriously one of my very favorite treasures.
PS - Those little easels (holding some of Porter's art below the handprints) are from Michael's. Check your local craft store in the picture/frame/art/easel department.
Added note: While the paint is already on the child's hand, have them do a few more handprints on cardstock so that you have that for their scrapbook, or the family scrapbook, or who knows what you might want it for. But you can't go back and do handprints from when they're younger.

What a great idea, Becky. I am about two weeks away from my son's first birthday and I think that this would be a great tradition to start in our family too. Thanks for sharing!!
Love your display! I did a hand and foot print outline in their scrapbook for their birthday each year, and I would also have them draw a picture of our family! I love seeing how their talent and perceptions of the family changed over the years.
Super cute idea! I love that you did them on canvas, it so much more "complete" than the regular I-did-it-in-the-classroom on thin construction paper!
I recently read the article in the Feb. CK with your office space and noticed you have an interesting paper trimmer, I have been on the look out for a new one so... do you love yours? and if so what is the brand?
thanks for the awesome idea! my son is turning ONE on the 29th of this month and i was looking everywhere for a cute family birthday tradition to start. i should of known that you would have it!
what a blessing!
So adorable! I have a sprial bound scrapbook for each of my kids and every once in a while we trace their hands and have them write their name! It is so fun to look back over the years and see this! I also have them draw a picture! I just want to remember each stage of their little lives! It is so precious!
Love your display with the hands! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for sharing Becky- you're the queen of awesome, fun ideas.
I did something similar last year with my 3 kids...there's something about their little hands that is so precious.

Cute idea, Becky. We do something similar, but put their hand prints on an apron that I paint with their name and then "Mommy's Little Helper." Under each hand print we put the date & age.
What a great idea. I think I want to start that. I wonder how bad it is that one is already four and one will be two. I guess better late than never.
Thanks for the idea!!!

Where were all these great ideas 33 years ago when my kids were little!!! I love the handprint idea and I also love the Christmas photo book. I never know what to do with all of those pics that come with cards. Kind of late now but I'm keeping a list of things that I'll pass to my daughter when and if they have children.
I love reading your blog.

What a cool, cool idea!! We have just been doing them on cardstock. I never thought about doing them on canvas!
I love how you display them Becky. I gave my husband a foot print of my new Son (my halloween baby!) for Christmas - he loved it. So now i am going to give him one every Christmas. Wish i had thought of it with my daughter - but then its never to late to start!
I love that Becky! Looks like I will be copying you yet again!
This is awesome. We've done handprints on watercolor paper and watered down paint so my love of detail is satisfied (I get to see all the cracks and lines in their hands). I will have to see if it works on canvas. TFS.

You can also use the extra hand-prints to make cards to send to grandparents, aunts/uncles, friends or to use as thank-you cards for birthday gifts!
I love love love this idea!
I love this idea! I took this idea from a page you did with Porter and Clair and there feet, I did a simular page with my two boys, and it is one of my favorite layouts, because I feel like I really have saved a little part of them when they were younger! thanks for the great ideas!
I love this idea. I will definately start this one on my youngest sons birthday (he is 4 months). But, as you said I cant go back for my 3 year old son. He was 3 last Saturday so I am going to do it today! Thanks for the great idea.
A Christmas tradition that I started (and you can 'go back' to is using the photo that I sent out with Chritmas cards. I take it to my local photo shop and they print it on porcelain to make a 'bauble'. I have one for each of my sons that I will give them for their own Christmas trees when they are older.

Becky - What a great idea! Too bad my kids are 6 and 3!!! Well, I guess it's never too late to start, right?
What a great tradition! I thought of another idea too. While you have paint on your childs hand stamp the front of some pre-folded cardstock for some really cute, really personal 'thank yous' or 'miss you' cards for friends or relatives that don't live close by.
Thanks for sharing with us Becky. Love everything you do :o)

I LOVE this idea of doing the handprints on canvas. It looks SO cute displayed like that. I really will have to copy this idea. Too bad I didn't start when my girls were babies :(
I too will suggest this to any new parent and start the tradition. Thanks for sharing this ideal.

Another hand print idea I saw was the every year at Christmas they would trace the childs hand on fabric and then add it to the Christmas tree skirt. It was a really cute idea!!

Oh! Becky! What a super cute idea, as always!
My boys are older now...........hmmm.......how can I adapt this one???
what a sweeet idea! About 4 christmas' ago my mom traced my kids hands onto paper, cut them out, and made ornaments out of them. They are so darling, I have them hung on my fridge year round :) My kids love pulling them down and comparing them to their handsize now!
You always have the BEST ideas! I LOVE it!!!! I need to start this! :D Thanks for sharing!!!
What a sweet idea! Wish I had thought to do this when my girls where small....TFS!! Love your ideas!!
I did a footprint each month of my kids' first year. I decided on a foot because you can't get babies to spread their fingers and lay their hand flat. I also used ink not paint. I have done their handprints also, a few times.
My sister & I have our footprints in the cement of my grandparents driveway and my parents sidewalk, along with the year. That's a cool and permanent (almost) thing to do.
How simple, how beautiful, Iam going to do this today..thank-you!
Thanks for the great idea, Becky - you are the Queen of Inspiration!
We are currently undergoing a huge renovation and when we move back in I am going to do this in my kids' new playroom, too. It doesn't matter that they will be 4 and 2 years old, because it'll be a brand new room - and so begins a new tradition...
As always, thanks so much for sharing!

I love this idea..I need to start doing with my 3 year old. Thanks for sharing.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this idea, Becky. You are so creative! Thank you so much for sharing. Perfect timing too--my son turns one next month. Would love to hear some other traditions you have started with your kids.
Grrr... I wish I would have been more creative in previous years! I would have loved to do this! My triplets are going to be 5 in March, so I think I'll do it for them. Age 5 is a milestone too, don't you think?
I appreciate you sharing all your great ideas! Maybe one day my house will be as cute as yours is!
Christine
LOVE this idea. What a talent you have for creative ways to preserve your childrens lives. They will cherish all these things for years to come. Where do you get your canvases? Angie
This post was perfect timing for me!!! Earlier tonight I tried to do the little store-bought plaster kit to make an imprint of my 18 month-old's foot and hand and it was a total failure! I ended up having to throw it away and was very disappointed!
For his 1st birthday, I made favors for all of our guests with my son's handprint, the date & "Mason's First Birthday". I thought I would probably end up doing that every year since everyone liked them so much, but Never thought about putting his handprint on canvas like you did ! Thanks so much--I feel much better about tonight's little "failed" project! :)
Lindsay
Once again, I copied you. Thanks for the creative ideas. Becky, do you protect the art after it has dried? I am concerned with fingerprints or dust ruining it.
