tribute to CKU

[ I heart ck events ]

A little flashback. This was one of my classes at CKU-Provo in the summer of 2004. Any chance you were there? Back then, I may have been teaching a class on creative lettering or border ideas or color-blocking ideas or something you would NOT see me teaching now. : )

By the way - if you want to see a taste of CKU, there are some fun videos on the CK site. Go here and click on "The CKU Experience".

[ me & cku ]

Some of you have asked where I'll be teaching in 2008.

I have chosen to cut back with my work travels, allowing me to be at home with my family even more. Our babies are growing up so fast. I've been teaching for a decade and have had amazing experiences, have met seriously special people, built friendships with people I will have otherwise never met, and have been to more cities than I can remember (thank goodness I do a year-end travels list every year so I can go back & look!).

What I'm trying to say is, I won't be teaching this year. I LOVE teaching, but it's time for a break in that corner of my work and I feel really, really good about the decision. I'll add that I think the CK events are terrific, and there is an incredible staff behind the scenes working very hard to bring the best of the best into one place. One event at a time. Every scrapbooker should attend one at some point! Be sure to look into the information here. There may be a CKU or CKC coming to your neck of the woods this year.

And, of course, if I make an appearance somewhere, or happen to teach something locally or whatever ... I will be sure to note this on my blog. Pinky promise.

[ CKU is coming to YOU! ]

Mark your calendar to watch Lisa on QVC on Feb. 4, where she will sell the CKU-in-a-box kit. I'll be in touch as we get closer with more details. I am part of this project and it's our way of bringing CKU right to your living room.

Becky,
I'm so bummed that you aren't going to be teaching anywhere this year! After missing you in Kansas City - I was just waiting to hear where you'd be this year so I could sign up. But, I totally understand. Thanks so much for letting us know and enjoy your break!

Good for you to take time for your family! You will never regret it and neither will they! This year I stepped away from my scrapbook business and my family and I have had the best year together! I just have tears thinking about it! So, I just had to write and say, CONGRATS and best wishes for 2008!

Given that CKU doesn't travel to Australia the chance of me seeing you were slim. Congrats on making your decision and being happy with it, that means it's the right one. Enjoy your family, you are sooooo right, before you know it they'll be leaving home and getting married!!!

Hi Becky

I quit working after my 3rd child was born! I will never regret spending this time with my children! My baby started Kindergarten this year and next year will be in school full time! I am beginning to think about getting back to work - so hard after being off for 5 years!

Enjoy the time with your family - they are a blessing! And it goes so fast!!

I know it's hard sometimes to make a decision as hard as you have and I certainly would love the opportunity to meet you in person, but I'm happy for you. Our kids do grow up so fast. We scrapbook them all the time, but if all we ever do is scrapbook them, eventually we will run out of photos and more importantly, memories. Enjoy your extra time with your babies!

Becky,
I can say for a fact that you will never regret spending time at home with your family. You have made the right decision for yourself. The time you have with your children flies by incredibly fast! When my husband and I were blessed with our one and only daughter 18 years ago I made the decision to stay home. When she started 2nd grade I went back to teaching just because we could leave together for school and come home together. When she entered High School I stayed home again. They need you at that time more than ever. Now she is off to college. She has grown into a women that we are extremely proud of. Enjoy

I know that there are already lots of people that have said this but I too wanted to let you know that I'm glad that you are taking a break...not that I do not LOVE your classes, well I have never been to one, but I have all your books and your article is my favorite in CK magazine. My point being... you can never go back when missing your kids, and after your family is done and all the kids are gone there will always be scrapbooking, and if for some crazy reason there is not you will never look back and say "I wish I had worked more, then spending time with my kids!" doesn't that just sound crazy! Take care Becky!

LOL - my mom and I are in that picture. It was my first CKU and you were my first teacher! I was so pregnant. My third daughter was born 3.5 weeks later. It was a mini album class called Loves of my Life where we made 5-10 pages with a different technique on each page. You are the only CKU teacher that I have ever had that I didn't have sign my ticket. DOH!

What a pleasant surprise to see that today! Thanks smiles today and for all the inspiration. Make it a beautiful day. Andria

Becky,

Hooray for you and your family! Thank you for using your blog to build community with all of us who started off loving your work, and ended up loving YOU! I originally came to your blog to find a bit of inspiration for scrapbooking, but honestly now I find so much encouragement in also loving my husband and kids, maybe making something yummy for them, and just enjoying the journey of life. You will no doubt continue to have a remarkable impact on others, and I'm happy for you that can be in a format that works for you and your family. Thanks again for being so generous with your time!

Hello Becky,
As much as I am a little bit disappointed that you will not be teaching this year, I do Thank You
very much for letting us know and making a pinky promise that you will keep us posted on your next appearance.I absolutely respect your decision to cut back work to spend time with your family. I do work 2 days a month and LOVE spending time and take care of my family. We are however blessed to have "YOU" teach us many many ways how to preserve the memories of our love ones. You make it easy and enjoyable for us to scrapbook. As a matter of fact, I just ordered your DVD and can't wait to get it. I owned all your books but 1 and 90% of my layouts are Becky Higgins style. As much as I admire the other artist, their style is just not for me. I just completed an album (26 LO- 52 individual pages) using your 3 books (Creative Sketches Part 1 & 2) and your new book Best if BH. It only took me 2 weeks. I am super fast bec. I follow your photo measurements and do my editing before printing my pictures. I even printed some of my journaling based on the tip you gave in the past. Finally I am able to journal in white ink. Yippeee!!!

Thanks for sharing your down-to-earth approach to scrapbooking with me, and with everyone i tell about scrapbooking. Your approachable style in scrapbooking & cardmaking is such a great thing, especially for new scrapbookers. i'm glad you will be enjoying time with your family, and i thank you for inspiring me in scrapbooking and life. i'll continue to look forward to your column in CK.
Best wishes,

Becky, you'll be missed in the CKU realm, but families are forever. Wise choice, girl. Just don't quit your blogging--I look forward to it everyday! (There's about 5 of you I frequent--my husband just rolls his eyes...ha.ha.) But he loves everything I've made from your recipe file so keep 'em coming!!! I still like the Becky Higgins Recipe Book idea--just make it look like a scrapbook and use all your favorite recipes!!! Doesn't have to be big, just good!!!

I totally understand and support your decision. It must be so tough to travel with little ones at home. I have to say I'd hoped you'd be teaching at CKU in Provo this year. I've never been to CKU before, and thought this year just might be the year (before my sister-in-law & her husband graduate from BYU in August) but I think I'll pass. Good for you for putting your family first. Have a wonderful year!

Hiya Becky -- Sorry you won't be teaching but totally understand.

Since I attended CKU-A Chicago and took your class, I have not felt the need to scrapbook any more. Funny, huh? I was just reflecting on this with a friend via email. She asked me why I was not scrapbooking. I told her I felt that the majority of the big things and little things in my life had been documented now. I have scrapbooked each of my family members, each of my friends, my nephew, my dog, my home, my job. I have scrapbooked photos from 1950's, 1960's, 1970's, 1980's, 1990's and of course 2000's. I have scrapbooked at least a little bit about college, high school, true love and heartbreak, vacations, travels, parties, things I like to do, etc. And then I did your snapshot album and now I have documented my favorite shoes, my computer, my car, my toothbrush, my favorite family traditions, and even the last man I went out on a date with.

So my story isn't "completely" told, but every major part of it has at least been touched on. And I am so so so glad you came to Chicago and I did that album, bc it really is a snapshot of me right now.

I still have IDEAS for scrapbooking topics I'd like to pursue, and maybe someday I will. But I no longer feel an internal pressure to keep going regularly. I've even had an article I wrote on beginning scrapbooking published in a national print magazine.

If I had babies that were growing and changing every day I might feel differently, but I don't. I still like making mini albums and gift albums, but again, I have made an album for every single important person in my life at this point. And I am really glad I have done so.

I'll still enjoy looking at your pages here on your blog but I don't think I'll be buying any more supplies or magazines, or taking any more classes. It was a great run but sometimes you have to say, ok I'm done now!
