more photo ideas

I know that most of you reading this are in a bit of a cold & snowy climate at the moment. (So I'll refrain from telling you how warm it's been here this week!) Here's a photo idea for anyone who thinks this is an awfully familiar scene:

Whether you have to shovel twice in a whole Winter, or you are busting out the snowblower on a daily basis, snap a picture of the action. I took this shot of David clearing our driveway in Cleveland some four years ago. The angle? I squatted down to get as close to the ground as possible. I'm not exactly missing Cleveland winters right now.

And if you haven't already read the comments from yesterday's post, it's worth breezing through to get other photo ideas. Thanks to all who chimed in. And thank you for the e-mails with more photo ideas! I can't take time to personally respond to each one, but I'm going to be posting an inspiring picture here & there from your fellow blog readers (maybe one will be yours?).

This photo is from Heather C. Her daughter (in Kindergarten) likes to pretend to teach school to her younger sister & dolls, and this is a sample of her writing, along with Heather's interpretation added to the print.

That is too cute. I love taking pictures of my kids artwork too. My son for a while was using his magnadoodle to copy Richard Scary vehicles which now are some of my favorites! He can't wait to be in kindergarten next year.

I'll have to remember that shot... we have one of those magnadoodles hidden in the closet for when my youngest daughter turns 4 at the end of January.

Just to add a little note.... for a less expensive version of the album and page protectors.... and for those who didn't get a kit! I got a red album at Walmart filled with room for 320 photos, the page protectors were 4-up of 4x6, ($11.96) so I purchased an extra package of page protectors for $1.96 to make up the rest of the year. Then to fit the journalling cards I purchased page protectors that were 2-up of 4x6 and have sewed them each in half and will place them in between the pages for that week. Not quite like Becky's Kit, but my idea nevertheless and it makes me SO happy to have figured out my own version. Isn't scrapbooking all about making your OWN memories and exploring your creative side?

Cute photo idea. I have to say, Becky...we SC folks are jealous of all the snow! I haven't seen a real snow fall here since I was pregnant with my 6 1/2 year old! Geez! I would love for my kids to see just ONE good snow fall before they grow up and get jobs! LOL! Thanks for sharing your photo, though! I am thoroughly enjoying this project.

Oh how I know that scene. Upstate NY is in an arctic freeze right now so badly that I don't even want to take my kids out to the store so I'm making hubby do it instead.

You really should check out Kolette Hall's take on the kit if you get a chance Becky. Here's her blog http://kolettehall.wordpress.com/
yesterday she put some pictures up of what she's doing with the kit.

Becky, one more thing, sort of off the subject, but I hope it will help some who have the kit.

I noticed one of my 4x6 decorative transparencies had a wrinkle on it and I thought it was flawed, but it turns out several of my transparencies (maybe all, I just haven't checked them yet) have a clear protective removable film on them that you just peel off. They look much clearer after you remove the film, too! I am really enjoying using them and will probably run out before fall!

I never noticed this in other transparencies I have used, but maybe this is news only to me!! LOL!

HTH someone...just FYI.

becky . . . thanx for sharing all of your awesome ideas! you are truly inspiring. have already planned how i am going to create my own version . . . but have a question about the "journaling". not sure if it should be more like a blow by blow of the day . . . just describing the photo . . . or something else. journaling is ALWAYS the hardest part of scrapbooking for me. any ideas or suggestions would be helpful!

Good Morning Becky,

I have a quick question about putting the book together. Since we are starting with a full week, what is put on the first page that has the 4 picture frames?

Thanks,
Diana

I have to say "thanks" for the person who posted about the transparencies. I, too, thought some of mine were flawed. I will have to revisit them tonight b/c I had no idea there was a clear film that needed to be removed!

Thanks!

Diana,
They gave us 4x6 cards for those slots. They look like the "week of" cards. There is also one for the front that says Project 365 and one for the back that says "That's a Wrap." My family has three people, so I put a photo of each of us in three of the spots and used the title card.

This is my plan since I didn't get to order a kit:
*2 sets of 6up photo sleeves through sei for $21 (or so)
* 12x12 D-ring modern album from American Crafts for $17
*the journaling cards that came in the download from Becky through snapfish.com. There were 14 files that were in the jpg download. this is how I'm ordering:
the 1st one-26
2nd-26
3rd-1
4th-1
5th-52
6th-52
7th-52
8th-52
9th-1
10th-13
11th-13
12th-13
13th-1
14th-13
The total on that was $28.44 before s&h. That should be enough for the whole year. I'm ordering all 4x6 matte prints.
I'm excited and have been keeping up with the picture taking and journaling until I get all the supplies. Thanks so much, Becky for the download!!!
Tina :-)

Scrappymommyof3 - thanks for posting that link; I think I am going to find some time this weekend to organize my album ahead of time for the year following her steps - it should save time throughout the year so I'm not debating over the "perfect" journaling block for each day :)

I thought I would update everyone with the info I received from CK this morning about my kit. I have an order number and shipping amount via email for a kit but was wondering when I was actually going to receive it. I called today and they said my kit was considered backordered (even though they have it in the warehouse reserved for me ?!?!?!?) and that it would not ship until mid February at the earliest. The person I spoke to said that when it was actually shipped I would receive an email with tracking info on it. I don't really understand what CK considers backordered and very I am skeptical about receiving the kit. Maybe I should use some of the great ideas posted here and do my own 365 album. Thanks to Becky and all the posters that have given such great ideas for this project.

Hi Becky
I know there is so many questions about re-ordering more 365 kits, so sorry to add another, but when I called CK Customer Service yesterday, she said they would have more kits available to order in Feb. and mentioned that they ordered another 5,000. I'm afraid to get my hopes up (because i really want a kit!)But I'm wondering if this is at all true? Thanks for posting all these great ideas!

Thought I would leave my order update here as well. I called today as I had received an email on January 5th confirming my order, saying it would ship via UPS and letting me know my credit card had been charged. We had been told our cc would not be charged until our order shipped, so I assumed my order had shipped. No, I was told this morning that the confirmation email was a mistake, that the credit card charge was a mistake, and that my order would not ship until mid-February. I can't understand why 11 days after receiving the email, why the credit card charge has not been reversed (I was told on the phone today that it would be). I was also told they were "working on" an email to let all of us know about this error. I am looking forward to the kit, but am frustrated with the service or lack of service... Glad some of you have received it and are having fun already!

CS told me the same thing. Even though I had been charged my kit wouldn't ship out until the first of February because they are behind in shipping.

Given the fact that CK is discontinuing Simple Scrapbooks magazine, you would think that they could provide some customer service to us who are still here giving us our money. Could we at least be given some kind of an "official" update?

I'm afraid that if they start refunding people, they'll lose our orders.

Hey Becky -- thanks for including my picture! I thought it was an interesting thing to document that people might not think of. I working on a sort-or project 365 -- since I did not get a kit, I think I am going to dedicate a book to just monthly spreads and do 2, 2-page spreads per month -- or something like that. Still working on the details, but taking photos. :) Heather

I am also in limbo land with my order. I have talked to people on the phone 3 times in the past 2 weeks confirming I have an order and my kits are in the warehouse. I have specifically made sure I am NOT in the backordered group. Each time they reassure me it will be shipping in a day or two, but still nothing. I called today and once again was told it would ship in the next couple of days. What is the hold-up? How hard is it to ship something if they are in the warehouse and my cc has been charged for 2+ weeks?? I am getting concerned....

i'm still loving the project and have managed to stay caught up. It's not that hard really...I thought it would be more difficult to keep up.

My photo today was a picture of me taking a picture of my youngest, age 4, who was taking a picture of me with his new digital "spiderman camera". i find my photography is getting more interesting and creative with every picture I take...

We are hibernating here in northern Maine where the temperatures fell to -40 degrees F. So, we are all cozy at home and I am catching up on some scrapbooking and having fun with the kids. Husband is away so I'll have even more free scrapbooking time! ;)

hey becky...

i was one of the many that did NOT get a Project 365 kit...but am not planning on starting my "365" until May, when my husband leaves for a 12 month deployment....maybe there will be more by then...and if not, I've already got plans to make my own (i'll share later if i remember).

anyhow...i wanted to share this idea i came up with after taking too many pictures during our weekends together & not knowing where to scrapbook them: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dailypieces/3126100411/in/set-72157611434505849/. my husband & i don't have any kids & actually only live together on the weekends (he works in one state & i'm in school in another). the bulk of our time spent together is on the weekends--which lends to lots of "everyday" photos but no place to put them. i take photos each weekend we are together, digitally add text to the photos with an explanation (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dailypieces/3126108033/in/set-72157611434505849/) and use a 1.5"-2" square punch to arrange them on one white 8.5x11 piece of cardstock. i add letter stickers/chipboard for the month...and poof! a whole month of "everydays" on ONE page that fits right into my regular scrapbook :) this could certainly be translated to Project 365, using one page per week OR (for those like us who don't have kiddos yet & are short on people subjects to photograph) one page per month :)

just thought i'd share...:)
happy weekend!

{p.s.--you'll notice in the Flickr folder that i use your sketches on most of my other layouts--they are wonderful!}

Becky,
I have a question for you...

While I am taking a photo (almost) everyday, many of my pictures are vertical. I am happy putting this pictures below in the vertical spaces, and then journaling on bigger 4x6 cards. However, there seem to be VERY FEW 4x6 cards that do not say "week of" on them.

I tried scanning them in, but the colors are way off. Is there any way that you and the designer who made the other digital versions (these are AWESOME) can add a few more of the "generic" 4x6 cards?

Since I wasn't able to get a kit, my solution was to buy two albums that fit four pictures per page, so when the album is open there are eight spots available. I'm using six of the spots for pictures and two for journaling. I'm keeping it super simple. Even though I can't fit the whole week on one spread, I think I'm achieving the objective, which is to document a year in the life of my family. I love this project. It has totally changed the way I look at things, and I think I'm getting better at taking pictures.
