valentines & another give-away

First, I extend my thoughts and prayers to those who are affected by the bush fire situation in Victoria, Australia (many of your fellow blog-readers live there). I am saddened to hear about the tragedy of homes and lives lost and pray that families and communities will be strengthened through this trial.

---

The winners of Candice's Valentines garland class are ... Jenny in Greifswald, Germany and Lisa in Honolulu, Hawaii! E-mail me, ladies, and I'll get you the code you'll need to register for the class. [ bhiggins@ckmedia.com ]

In case you need a Valentines idea, I thought I'd share something we're pulling together this week. These are for our kids to distribute to their respective classmates in school. They have been involved in the process and we're having fun doing the project together.

Started with some packages of some classic Sweethearts candies:

Then both kids did their own Valentines art on a plain sheet of 8 1/2" x 11" paper.

Porter's art:

Claire's art (I added the text in Photoshop after I scanned it in):

I scanned them in, and reduced their size to about 2" x 3". In a Pages document (that's like Word for Macs), I created a shape/box (like a text box), dropped the image in the middle, and duplicated this 2 more times on the page. This is what it looked like, ready to print:

After I printed the sheets, I trimmed along the borders to get the final sheets, all ready to wrap around each box:

The kids used a glue stick all over the front of each box, then we placed a wrapper on each one:

The final step, of course, is to wrap it around the box and adhere the wrapper to itself on the back of the box.

---

Totally changing the topic, but keeping on a related note of GIVING to others ... my mom wants to GIVE someone the cross-stitch patterns (see the past couple posts). How cute is she!?

So here we go again. If you are interested in winning the angel or monthly pillow patterns, leave your first name & where you live and my MOM will randomly choose 2 of you to win. She just ordered the patterns for this purpose, so as soon as they arrive, she'll ship them to those 2 winners.

Yay for cute moms!

Becky's Mom -

Thanks so much for the fun give-away. My mother made a similiar pillow set for me as a wedding present. Now, my oldest daughter is approximately the same age as I was when I learned to cross-stitch and I would love to pass-on the tradition.

I am sure you are extremely proud of your daugher, Becky. I also am a mother of 3 children, ages 3-8, and she provides me with tons of inspiration.

Thanks again for the chance to win in this give-away.

How cute of your mom to get into the blog giveaway spirit.

I thought both were very cute & wouldn't mind either of them. Although I do have to finish my daugther's Pooh Bear cross-stitch sometime in the not so distant future. It's fun to do small projects when a large one is getting a little crazy though. Take a little break & all.

I like the sweethearts idea. Did you see the one that they made in Family Fun Magazine with the ipod sweathearts? That was cute too. I did the one that was suggested last year (yup, know I'm behind but loved the idea) where the kids make a valentine & you take a pic & use that has their card.

That is too cute! Like mother, like daugther. That is so fun that you two share your talents with each other and with others. I would love to make the angel for my own mom. She's worked my whole life to support four kids all alone and never had time for crafts. Homemade things represent gifts from the heart. I would love to make this for her for Christmas this year. Hi Becky,

Thanks for your kind thoughts. I live in Victoria and my mum, sister and sister-in-law live all a bit too close for comfort. In fact the fire came within 50 metres of my sister-in-law's back door.

With 181 lives confirmed lost and expected to rise, nearly 800 homes destroyed and thousands of people left homeless the situation is heartrenching and devasting. I wanted to let your blog readers know that if they would like to help, and they can afford it, they can donate via the Red Cross (www.redcross.org.au).

Thanks again for you thoughts and prayers.
