day of random topics

Wanted to answer more of the questions you've been asking lately, so I'm going to be all over the place today. : )

[ 365 IDEA ]

First, just sharing another thought on what you're recording/capturing ... whether it's for Project 365 or not. Think about a funny quirk or habit that you or one of your loved ones has right now. Not necessarily a lifetime/long-term thing, but just some little thing that years from now, you'll hear yourself saying "Oh yeah! Remember when so-and-so was totally into ... " (fill in the blank).

Our Claire is obsessed with rollie pollie bugs lately. She goes outside numerous times a day, digging and searching for rollie pollies, and collecting them in a cup until we encourage her to put them back where they can survive.

This was yesterday's potd:

[ SMALLER PICTURES ]

You have a fellow blog reader here who wants to share step-by-step information to those of you who are interested in knowing how to get a couple smaller pictures on one 4" x 6" print. Click on this file below. A huge thank-you to Krista in Ohio!

[ SHOE BENCH ]

Regarding the shoe bench in one of my recent pictures of the day ... we found that at IKEA. But I'm not sure that they still have that same one. We got it a few years ago.

[ WHY NIKON? ]

I've gotten a few questions about my DSLR, and why I've chosen the one I am currently using. First of all, for those of you who don't know, my husband David really is the techie in our family. Not me. Between him and my ultra-techie-genius brother Kevin, I completely trust their technical choices.

That said, our current DSLR is the Nikon D90. We have always used Canon. Always. Until this camera came out in last September. We bought it literally the day before Crew was born because it was the first DSLR to offer video capability. We have loved doing video clips on our point & shoot for years (we never use a traditional camcorder anymore) and we wanted to try it with SLR quality. So despite the quirkiness of the feature (we have to manually focus while recording) ... it is awesome video quality. And fantastic picture quality too, of course.

And now ... Canon has the video feature on their SLR now. Go figure.

Oh, and someone wanted to know which lens I use. It's the Nikon 18-105 mm.

[ BACKUP ]

Speaking of technology, what we use for backing up everything on our Mac is Time Capsule (the hard drive) with Time Machine (the program that comes with every new Mac).

[ NEWEST IDEA BOOK ]

For those of you who love staying current with the latest & greatest in scrapbooking, CK has a new source of great ideas. It's called Easier-than-Ever Scrapbooking 2 and you can check it out here. In fact, here is a coupon code you can use between now and May 31 for 15% off your purchase of this special issue: QEYB-5778-ULYB. (Note: It's not valid if combined with any other discount offer.) Feel free to share it with friends!

The easiest way to do several pics on a 4 x 6 is through Picasa. It'a a free download and it is FABULOUS. They have created a collage button and I have used it SEVERAL times when I want to use several pics from 1 event. I would love to show an example but I don't have a blog. Becky, could you send me your email and I will share a pic...everyone will love it...and its super super easy!

I second the comment above about Picasa. I have also done several 4x6 collages for my Project 365. It is so much simpler...just select photos click on collage and decide which style of collage you want. I have used this to create a huge variety of collages and I'm pretty much addicted to it now. I will also be using this collage option so that I can cut up the collage for smaller photos on layouts or mini albums. You can also easily add text to your photos through Picasa and then I have all of my photos printed through Costco. I would love to show examples of my collages but don't have a blog either.

Thanks or the post, Becky!

Question for you: I have a similar open staircase with (what I call:) a triangle wall in the greatroom. I am having the hardest time with ideas on what to hang on that wall. I like symmetry and with it being triangular, I don't know what to do! I'd love to see how you have decorated yours! THANK!

I love my Time Capsule. We just made a whole-house switch to Mac - there is only one Windows laptop in the house and that is my wife's computer for work. We went with a Mac Mini for my son (age 9), a MacBook for my wife and I have a 24-inch iMac. Bought the Time Capsule at the same time and do not regret it. All three machine back up to it.

I just blogged about how to print multiple pics on one 4X6. I designed photoshop templates that make it easy to do. You can download the templates for free off my blog. www.jackiarchibald.blogspot.com

Thanks Becky for all you ideas... and readers- I want to check out Picassa's collage feature!

That is so funny, my kids have really been into the potato bugs this year. They find them everyday, it seems like. I just got a Canon and so I decided to start the Project 365 from my birthday. I am going strong, so far.

Becky, I'm on my third baby album (three daughters), but my first with your kit. THANK YOU! I can't tell you how much I appreciate your kit...how cute, how organized, how easy to just jump into it. I am so appreciative of your talent and making everything so adorable, but especially easy. :)

I have two school kits, that I bought when I had only two kids, that I have tucked away...will you be offering another school kit in the years to come? I'm not even close to finishing her baby book, but I can't imagine doing a school album without a kit from you!

Did you spray paint your shoe bench black? If so, how did you do it? My friend has one just like it in a lighter color but would love it dark like yours. Thanks!!

I wasn't able to open the 4x6 link either but whenever I want to have two small 2x3 photos I just take my disk to CVS and use the Kodak Picture Maker. It takes only a couple minutes and I like the quality better than me doing it at home. They've 'hidden' this option on some machines and it is under the section about making cards or something like that. Just click around and you'll come across it. It also makes 4 mini prints to a 4x6.

Hi Becky!
Thanks for sharing your talents with us!
I just had a quick question. Is Project 365 kit still available? I would love to start one now the summer before my son starts kindergarten just as a reminder in years to come of how he was pre-going to BIG school and also to record his first year at school.
Thank you
Deana

Hi Becky,
I had 2 questions about the school kit. I was just getting ready to start the one I purchased as my daughter is just finishing her first year of preschool. My kids will be in preschool for 2 years but there is only one preschool packet - what ideas can you suggest on how to scrapbook her 2 years of preschool with one packet. Next question, in the school expansion kit there is a growth chart - any ideas on where I could purchase another growth chart that is similar to the one in the packet?
Thanks for all your ideas!
I love your work!
Sincerely,
Becca

Hi Becky,

I was just wondering if you knew what was happening with the KOTM site....no one seems to know if there are other kits coming or what is going on.

If they are no longer doing it, please tell me you will be doing kits for someone else! I've purchased all of your kits except for the baby kit (My baby albums were already done, but I would have been all over your kit had they not been!). I LOVE all the kits you've created for us!!

Thanks so much for all you share with us!!!

I also had to chuckle at the bug picture - my four year old's preschool class is learning about bugs this week and the big hit was learning about the dung beetle or "poop bug" as they all referred to it. So we got to hear all about it and that became my picture of the day on Tuesday when she brought home a small plastic replica from school :-)
