portrait challenge

Since some of you were asking about that picture I took of Crew (see May 18th post), I thought I'd go ahead and share all my deep secrets. Kidding. No secrets. SO easy. Have a favorite blanket or even an old sheet? Tape it to a wall or drape it over a chair. I hung this blanket from our countertop in the office and temporarily secured it on top with tape (or you could use a pile of heavy books or something).

Put your subject in front of the blanket, but not right against it. Bring him/her toward you a couple feet (or more, if room allows).

Then zoom in and start shooting.

See? No real secrets. Oh, except natural light is a MUST. The window is behind me, so all that light on Crew is completely natural. You don't want to use a flash for portraits. Here's another favorite blanket. Same concept.

So here's my challenge to you: If it's been a while since you've taken a nice portrait of someone you love - your child, your pet, a friend's kid, a friend, even your husband ... do it! Go for a walk, get outdoors, do some fun & candid shots outside. But give the indoors a try, too. All you need is a backdrop, a camera, a willing subject, and the desire to snap away.

Of course it's a bonus to have Photoshop for a little digital editing with your images when you're done snapping. : )

I do this all the time, but I realized that most of my blankets have had too many patterns. Lately I've just used solid colors, but a all over pattern looks amazing.
THANK YOU!

I just had to tell you that I was about a month behind on my journaling and feeling so awful about it. I write down little notes on my calendar so I can go back and journal but was feeling overwhelmed about actually doing it, but the last two days I got completely caught up! yay! I felt so great to be back on the bandwagon and know I'll be so grateful I'm doing this. Now to get my Mac fixed so I can send all my pics to Costco, print them, and fill up the empty photo holders!

Love the pictures-I do this often too. So sweet!

Adorable! You can also use a telephoto lens or a wide aperature (fast lens) to blur out that background for another interesting look. Natural light is the way to go. Love it!

I have tried to do this before but it never seemed to work out. I will have to try it again! Visit The Original Scrapbox and check out their products.

I have had a great time lately taking portrait style pictures of my kids! I will have to look and see if I have any nice blankets or sheets to use as backdrops though. Thanks for the tips Becky! If anyone wants to check out some of the pictures I have taken check out my blog at http://simplyharris.blogspot.com

Thanks so much for sharing. I love the pics you took of Crew! He's so adorable! How do you get the background to blur like you do? Do you step way way back and then zoom in?

Great tips Becky!!! Thank you!

What Photoshop editing do you generally do to all of your photos? They look so natural. I do a few basic things, but they can sometimes end up looking fake. Any assistance you could provide would be much appreciated!

Thanks for sharing! I recently did the same for my 3 kids for our Christmas card photo only I dressed them in black turtle necks and used a black piece of fabric hung over the back of the sofa. Then had the kids each hold large white wooden letters that spelled J-O-Y. It was so awesome!
Crew is so cute with those pointed toes!!

I live in a deep dark basement apt cave. Any suggestions for indoor shots where there is not a lot of natural light. (seriously it is a hot commodity around here)

Will you be coming out with another sketch magazine?!?!? I use yours ALL the time!! I have seen the sketches in each CK magazine, but love the convenience of having them all in one book. I've gotten several friends hooked on them too-- please print more!!!

Can anyone recommend what version of Adobe Photoshop to buy? I use Acrobat quite a bit at work, but would love to get Photoshop for my scrapbooking. I went on staples.com and they have several different versions...I want one that is user friendly :-)

Thanks & have a great weekend!

I have also used colorful wrapping paper for my backgrounds before, which is fun.

One question; I have seen several things where your text is in white. And I thought I had read somewhere a while back about how you do this, but now I cannot find it. Just wondering if you would share. :)

To the person who is trying to write in white, you have to change the color of your canvas to a color (not white) and then type your words using a white font. This is with Photoshop. There's no way to type in white in a Word document on colored cardstock unless you have a special ink cartridge that has white specifically included. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the tips! Love how you "showed the secret" and then the final result :) Some of my best pics have been done this way -but I have never tried a pattern - always have used a solid (usually black). These are so fun! I think I'm going to go get some cute paisley fabric and take some snapshots of my daughter today. Thanks for the challenge!!

My dad used to drap blankets behind us, typically red or blue, when he would take our pictures. :-P

Hi Becky,

I have a quick question about the kinder books - love them by the way!

do you print out the left hand sheet for each kid as well as print each pic for the child? If so where do you do that and also do you scrap other pages for the kids books for the school year with their papers and events like field day?

thanks for your help and feedback today.

Not sure if this is the right place to mention it, but I saw a post about ShutterCal.com through your blog before and now they are having a wonderful photo contest! They are giving away "lensbaby" lenses, which I also have never heard of before, but they look like a lot of fun. Just thought I would share!

Love Crew's chubby little legs! What a cutie.

Does Claire have a Birth & History scrapbook like Porter and Crew do? Can't wait till I have a family, I'm following your lead with the color-coded scrapbooks!

Hi Becky, on a completely unrelated note - do know where I can get the sturdy 12x12 memorabilia pockets like the ones that were in the school years kit? I know you said they were specific to the kit - but do you know of any company that makes something similar (which is also 12x12 and can fit into a 3-ring binder)? Thanks :)
