my parents, the missionaries.

These fine people are my parents.

Some of you reading this have met my mom. She has traveled with me to CKUs and conventions many times "back in the day" (I have been taking a break from work travel). This week, we bid farewell to my folks as they embarked on a new chapter in their lives together. They are off to Finland to serve a mission for our Church.

They'll be there for 18 months. I'm so proud of them (Finnish does NOT look easy to learn!), so pleased that they are doing this, and so grateful for the modern technology we have today, which will make it super easy to stay in touch just as much as we do already.

Aiti & Isa, rakastan sinua niin paljon!

What an experience for the whole family! And yes, I've heard Finnish is a very difficult language - what a cool thing for them to learn and come home to teach you all.

Congratulations on their call! My in-laws served in Nauvoo. They were great people before they went but it was amazing to see how the Lord can magnify us beyond our natural abilities.

How neat! I've heard the people of Finland are wonderful! Actually, I saw a neat story that Diane Sawyer did on GMA this past winter from Helsinki... it looked absolutely beautiful!

I've heard Navajo is the most difficult language, then Finnish, so Wow, tough. I didn't realize they were leaving so soon. So that's why you were up at K&L's. (I met you at the park). I was meaning to come over and really meet you, but was so, so busy. But K&L are great! Just love 'em.

Congrats to your parents! My in-laws served a mission in Germany about 10 years ago. Part of the area was the same area where my FIL served his mission as a young man about 28 years prior. My hubby and I took care of their house and finances while they were gone. It was a tremendous blessing to our whole family. Of course they missed the grandkids while they were out but they were happy to serve the Lord.

I'm sure your parents will touch a lot of lives and will have a lot of wonderful experiences. Good luck to them and to you, too.

My husband's family is from Finland. All of his paternal great-grandparents came over in the early 1900's. His grandpa speaks Finnish. I love listening to him talk, but I don't know if I could ever learn it myself!

You're parents are in Finland? OMG, I've lived in Finland and it's SOOOO nice there, especially this time of the year!! I hope they can deal with drunken Finns during Midsummer (and any other time of the year ;) Where are there in beautiful "Suomi"? By the way if my Finnish doesn't fail me (it's been a while) it's " Äiti & Isä rakastan
teidän niin paljon" But you did pretty good for starters, Becky :)
Finnish is hard to learn but once you've learned it, it's pretty cool. I wish your parents the very best of luck! I'm sure they'll love it there!

Love from Germany,
Jenny

Our oldest son returns from serving his mission in Brasil in three weeks!! I'm sure my son will meet your parents. I'll tell him to tell them that I know you through Project 365....love it!

what a wonderful thing to do as a couple, to serve a mission!

No way, no way!!!! Your parents are going to Finland on a mission. I'm from Finland. I'm LDS too. But I live in Canada now. Finnish is one of the hardest languages in the world but thank goodness many people there speak English too. I hope from the bottom of my heart that they'll love their mission. How exciting!!! :)

I actually served in Finland. I just got back two years ago. You can tell them not to worry. If they are anywhere in the main cities most people speak English as there are alot of immigrants. It's a tricky language, but people, especially members are always kind to help you out. They'll be able to get around, go to the grocery store, and such just fine. When it comes to teaching though... most of the senior couples in Finland work with inactive members alot. I only really knew of two couple that really 'tracted', but they want to talk to anybody they see. Just be really friendly, Finns aren't really used to that. =) I love them though. Such hard working, loving people. When you earn their trust they'll let you in. Tell them best of luck from me. Paljon Onnea!! Tervesia Sisar Rhodes

Becky,

I, too, have parents that are serving a mission right now. (In Wyoming at Martin's Cove.) There is no greater blessing in our lives than having my parents (and my children's grandparents) on a mission serving the Lord. Best of luck to your parents-what a wonderful gift they are giving you!
