ode to taking pictures

Wanted to share this e-mail with you (with Lisa's permission):

Hi Becky,

I thought I would share one of my POTD's from last week - your last blog post talks about the big and the little things.

The photo is the weekly rubbish truck collecting our rubbish. My boys love the rubbish truck and get so excited when they hear it coming, they race to the front window to see it - that was what I did the journalling about.

This is a photo I would NEVER have taken if it were not for Project 365, rubbish collection - a part of our life every week.

Thanks for the inspiration. Bye for now.

Lisa
(from Australia)

That's exactly the frame of mind I have been developing over the course of the past 6 months myself, because of taking a picture every day. I constantly see opportunities for capturing life in such a different way than years past. Obviously I'm not taking pictures all day, every day. Usually it's just the one time per day (to get my POTD - picture of the day).

But this is what's interesting.

I've always thought I had a less-than-stellar memory. And that's always bothered me. But pictures (and scrapbooking) have been a huge influence on improving my memory. And I'm not talking about looking at pictures, because that's obviously going to jog my memory. I'm talking about the act of taking a picture and then seeing that image, even if I rarely go back and look at it.

That right there, improves my memory. There's some little special place in my brain for memory based on the act of taking a picture. For me. Maybe even for you?

Either way, I am just so grateful for photography. Even taking pictures of garbage collection day.

I love the "rubbish truck" idea...some days it's really hard to find something interesting to take a picture of. One night I hadn't taken a picture of anything when my son put a marble between each of his toes because they needed to stretch...viola! Picture of the day! You just have to be ready to catch the moment. Thanks for all your ideas and inspiration!

I am so glad I started this project. Mine didn't get started until march but I am so excited to hit day 100. My kids love it, my family loves it. I am documenting each day on my blog that I had always neglected. Although I had purchased the 365 kit, I have decided to create a digital book at the end of the year instead. I am putting up a new photo everyday on my blog with journaling and that is what I will use for the book. I never thought this would be such an enjoyable project. This will be a treasured book in the years to come.
Thanks so much for you ideas.

Love this! & I just have to share...it was late last night...& my POTD had not been taken...so my son, age 14, who by the way had gotten a nasty sunburn yesterday...said "Mom, do you have your picture today?" No, not really, I said. So there he is, shirtless, sunburned & flexing his muscles & showing off his abs...wa-la! POTD!!!

I love this too. Yesterday my daughter joined in. I had taken a photo for the day already but she came and got my camera about 9pm and said "I have a better picture of the day" She came back with a photo of her boyfriend sound asleep with his puppy. So much fun to involve other family members.

Can I just tell you that I LOVE that I brought my POTD with me here to Finland. I am Becky's mom and my husband and I arrived here just one week ago. We will be here for the next 18 months. There have been many opportunities for those POTDs. So, is it okay for me to say KIITOS to my wonderful daughter for being so creative. This really has been very memorable for me to do. My only problem is that I tend to have more that ONE POTD! And that is okay as well!! Love you Becky. Appreciate all of your wonderful help! Mina rakasta! Mom

I too love POTD!! My kids think it's great too. They are eager to help me find a POTD. I agree Becky that my memory has been helped by taking photos. I can't remember things very easy but if I've taken a photo of it I remember like it was yesterday. Weird how our mind works.

When I used to work in Pre-k, everyday during recess the garbage truck would come right by the play ground to the dumpsters and pick up the trash. Literally all the kids on the playground would rush to the fence and watch the truck. It was so funny each and everytime they did it. I dont know if it was the LOUD beeping back up sound or the actual picking up of the large dumpsters that facinated them. LOL HAve a great day!

I totally agree about the act of taking a picture and how it improves your memory! I feel the same way, for whatever reason if I have taken a picture of it I remember that moment/event a lot better! It's like having a photographic memory...LOL

Like the others, I LOVE this project! I blog about my day, every day! And I don't just take one picture either, I usually end up with quite a few and I include those on my blog, even though I will only select one to include on my layout. Sometimes it's very hard to pick just one though!

I love checking out your blog for inspiration! I too have taken a picture of the garbage truck...although I don't think it made it to POTD status, but it's document on my blog and I plan to print my blog posts from this year as a book to correspond with the book I will print of my layouts, because I digi scrap :)

Thanks again Becky for being such an inspiration to all of us :)

I've enjoyed that I've been able to take pictures of just anything and not have to think of how I could incorporate that one picture into a layout, so this Project 365 has been an incredible photo experience for me. I've taken pictures of my kid's dental cleanings, dinner meals, planting flowers, skinned up knees, etc. Love it!

I haven't started POTD yet but hope to get started when my husband deploys next month. I think it will be a great way to document all that is going on in our lives and to share it all with my husband.

Thanks for being such a great cheerleader!

That is so funny - we got door to door recycling pick up recently and sure enough that was my POTD - our brand new spankin' blue recycling bins. I have tried to do two things each week:
-Have ONE photo of ME per week.
-Have ONE photo of an object.

With 3 adorable kids - it is easy to just shoot the kiddies.

Hey Becky, I am Lisa's Friend. I just want to thank you again. Lisa gave me some of the left over stuff so I started my project. Let me just name a few things that I have journaled. My husband's 2 cancers, his father's death, my daughter's 2 surgerys, my daughter breaking off her engagement, hives all over my body, my mother's anurisim and recovery, my son and daughter in law moving to Boise, my husbands surgery fo fix a "gone-wrong" after cancer surgery, and other good things all since the first of February. The year is only half over and the book is priceless. I love the fact that I have to look for something every day, and count my blessings. You are a hero to me for putting this in my life. I HOPE you do this again next year......and for years to come! :)

Thanks for sharing my email Becky. The question I asked myself when taking the photo was "the boys faces or the rubbish truck' -I already have LOTS of excited little boy's face photo's in my Project 365 so the truck won out. The journalling is what makes the photo so special - the boys wont remember being so excited and I might forget. I love my Project 365 and know it will be a treasured family record.

Becky,

I love your Baby kit and am about to give birth to #3. Any chance you could post some of your layouts that you have done for Crew? (Or a video of what you've done--whatever is easier.) A lot of the samples I've seen out there on other blogs are 1 page layouts or not my style and I love your 2 page style!

I just want to thank you for creating Project 365. I have absolutely loved taking my pictures everyday, writing my journaling and documenting what's going on in our lives. I keep the album out on my coffee table and visitors are always impressed with what a simple, wonderful concept it is! My kids look through it several times a week too. I really, really hope you make another one for next year. I know I'd buy one and I have several friends who would purchase one too.

This is so cute. I cannot believe that we're already 6 months on our POTD. I am proud to say that I'm still going strong. Up to date with photos and journaling. I've learned a lot already just by browsing through my pics. Now I pay more attention to everyday life rather than just taking pics during occasions. I also like reading about your parents.I want to follow their blog too.TFS. Like the other poster, any new book in the making? I am proud to say that my albums are mostly Becky style layouts. And I have lots of them.

I love this project. It really helps us see the beauty in our daily lives. I am a semi-professional (natural light) photographer who is very critical of my own work. Often I am not impressed when I take a picture BUT over time when I look back at them I can be amazed: how beautiful my children are, what a great day we had, how I treasure that memory...

I love the truck! I am so thankful that you shared the idea of taking a POTD and making them oridnary, everyday things. My new blog is named for this reason..."Ordinary Inspirations!" I much rather take pictures of people and things that are not posing...it seems to capture TRUE life!

You're so right Becky! Taking a photo actually makes your brain register & take note...it's like saying someone's name when you are introduced to them...it becomes a conscious act that then gets filed in our brain archives in a higher priority file than just the everyday gaze one! I have become SO MUCH more aware since I have been playing along with your 365 idea. I haven't always succeeded because, like you, my camera broke, & I have no family in my province from whom to borrow, so I have had to play a bit of sneaky "catch up" but generally it is coming along well & looking back on it is great ;-D

I love it, great idea. Some days I find it easier than others to capture my life photos. Thanks for the ideas.
I am in the middle of organizing my baby kits to get ready to put together (this will be somewhat of a challenge as my kiddos are now almost 9 & 5). Could you let us in on a few pages that you've done for Crew??
Thanks for everything you do!!
