creative photo idea

Monday, September 28th, 2009

This sweet little angel just made my friend Evie a grandma. I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen a more enamored grandma!

I don’t take credit for thinking of this idea but when Evie described a picture she had seen one time, I caught the vision and gave it a whirl during the quick photo shoot at my house. This is the end result:

Could make a fun baby announcement. This is how I set up the shot. First of all, we were near a window. Natural light is a must. Put a blanket over Mom, gave baby Aubrey to Mom, had Grandma hold Aubrey’s feet and Dad had the ever-so-important duty of holding the blanket up in the background so that when I looked through my lens I saw nothing but white.

Of course I framed the shot knowing that I’d be incorporating letters on the image, with her little feet creating the “V” in “LOVE”. This is the original image.

As we all know, Photoshop is magical. Knowing just a few tricks can completely change a picture. In this case, I simply desaturated (made it black & white) and totally cranked up the exposure, and added a little contrast.

it’s a new day.

When you flip the page from one chapter and begin the next, it is indeed a new day. My new chapter has begun.

You’ll notice this website is different now. As a heads-up, my entire blog is about to be wiped clean. It will have a home on CK’s site somewhere, so I’ll be sure to point you to those archives when that transition happens. I know some of you like to look back and find certain posts.

As I move on and move forward, I just wanted to take a second to tell you — my blog readers — that I look forward with great hope and excitement and possibility. Based on the record-breaking number of comments on my last post (over 2,000) it is clear to me that you’re onboard. I want to thank you for checking in … whether it’s part of your daily routine, or just in once in a while.

To celebrate the change — the new chapter — I want to GIVE. Expect a solid week of daily doses of something from me. Every day for a week I will share tips & ideas on various topics that may be of interest to you or someone you know. I’ll begin this as soon as my blog is “reset”.

Note: If the new design isn’t quite “reading” right on your computer, be sure to hit the “refresh” icon. It looks like an arrow (or a couple of arrows) chasing itself in a circle. Like this.

i’m just wondering …

You guys are killing me. Thank you so much for the generous comments and well wishes and story-sharing and everything. I really do have the best blog audience ever. Seriously, I appreciate your support. It means a lot to me.

Now.

I have a question for you. I need an answer in the form of a NUMBER.

Q: Let’s say I could bring you a Becky Higgins picture-a-day type of product by the end of the year. No promises. Just hypothetical. Please leave a comment with a NUMBER ONLY (no actual comments this one time, please) and tell me … if I could pull it off and make it happen, how many kits would you buy?

1
2
3
27 (come on, you know you want to)

So really. Leave a number. This is so I can gauge your interest and figure out if and how I can make this happen for you. It would help if you told your friends to come here & chime in too. If you don’t leave a little number in the comments, please don’t be surprised if I run out of kits too soon. ; )

on to the next chapter.

Today is my last day with Creating Keepsakes.

After 12 years with the company, I have chosen to resign as an employee of CK. I am doing this with nothing but the best feelings. It’s just the right time for me to step down and move forward. I am so grateful for the ride that I’ve had and want to assure you that ride is not over. I’m not going anywhere. I’m not dying. I’m not quitting this hobby. I’m not running away. I’m totally here. (And so is CK. I wish them all the best!)

I’ll never forget that day in 1996. I was a young, newlywed college student. As I was coming home between work and class, I picked up my mail. I started heading upstairs to our apartment as I sifted through the pile. And there it was. A little mailer piece that introduced an up & coming magazine called Creating Keepsakes. A magazine about scrapbooking. A whole magazine dedicated to scrapbooking!? This was my hobby.

A short time later, I happened to meet the magazine editor’s mother in church one Sunday. Clarine Downs. Mother of Lisa Bearnson. The rest is history. My first article was published in the 4th issue of CK.

My niche in scrapbooking (and what I was really known for in the beginning) was creative lettering. The next thing you know I’m writing a couple more articles, traveling to teach at a consumer show, making a television appearance and ultimately becoming an employee of CK. I was their first Creative Editor. And I really didn’t know what I was doing. ; )

Fast-forward. I can’t even count how many articles I’ve published (I have had something in every single issue). No idea how many consumer shows and trade shows I attended. Taught class after class after class. I did 9 books. Made some QVC and other TV appearances. Traveled to visit various scrapbook stores. Left the country a few times to spread the good word of scrapbooking. Created a handful of products. All the while, brought 3 beautiful little people into the world with my husband David.

So many good memories. So much that I learned. I feel like I grew up with CK as I was only 21 years old when they took me on-board. I don’t even have the words to express gratitude to my dear friend Lisa Bearnson. And so many others at CK who became my friend. But it was Lisa who saw something in me in the first place and helped me to realize that my passion & my gift could reach so many. Giving me the opportunity to be involved at that level opened so many doors.

Who knew that I would get to share ideas on a global level? Who knew that I’d have friends from South Africa to Canada to New Zealand because of a hobby? Who knew that scrapbooking was going to actually explode into the industry that it became?

I feel so blessed to be a part of it all and look forward to continual sharing. It’s what I love to do.

(Yes, I’m still blogging.)

Word docs

I should have done this sooner, sorry. There was a glitch when I first tried to save my documents as Word, but I figured it out now.

So here you are. WORD documents so that you can edit however you wish and not have to create from scratch. Enjoy.

Here is the cover page for those books that I’m doing with the 1st graders. Keeping it simple with the facts & a self portrait. Oh man. The self portraits are the BEST. I love this age for art.

Here are the PDF and the Pages (for Mac) files if you want them:

By the way, if you’re in the mood to whip up some amazing red velvet cake, check this out.

green eggs and … salmon-ish oragne-ish?

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

One or two drops of food coloring goes a long way with my kids.

That’s all it takes to put a huge smile on their faces. Inspired by Dr. Seuss’ “Green Eggs and Ham”, I’ve been making green eggs for my kids for quite some time. (My favorite part was the fact that they thought I was completely magical until I eventually let my secret out of the bag.)

Recently I tried to be more creative with other colors. Looks kinda gross, actually. But they could not be more excited. Is there something really little that you do, that just brightens your kids’ day? Feel free to share. Inspire us.

dishes, anyone?

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

Cute, eh?

I got a fun package in the mail yesterday. Included this darling little number. Thank you Sabrina. So adorable. Doesn’t it just make you want to do the dishes? Another talented friend (Hi, Laura!) made the apron. Laura has other cute things to see in her etsy shop too. Check it out here.

I am so grateful to have several friends with this amazing gift for sewing. I just love it.

I’m sharing the left page, the right page, and the page of labels. I’m giving you the pdf version, which is ready to print, as well as the Pages version, which can be edited as long as you have Pages on your Mac (similar to Word for a PC). Sorry, no Word version. I’m a Mac girl. But you can always create your own sheet of captions by creating text boxes or however you want to do it.
