spray-painting obsession
Obsession. Such a strong word. Maybe I shouldn't use that. But ever since I picked up my first couple cans of spray paint about 4 months ago, I tend to look at things (everything) with a new perspective: To spray-paint or not to spray-paint? That is the question.
So yeah, it does feel like it's been a bit of an obsession. But now that I've painted a dozen things, my creative spirit has been fed. So I can move on in a non-obsessed way. We've been slowly adding more (happy, fun, lively) color into our home since the first part of 2009. And with that color, WHITE has been the new favorite neutral around here. Not off-white or cream or "Arizona White". Crisp, clean, bright white.
And so today, I want to share this "painting kick" with you in case it might inspire you to paint something too. Not everything, but something. Think of something you have in your house that needs a fresh update. Something that could use a splash of color.
This is what you can pick up at your local hardware store. Rust-Oleum. We even got a few cans on amazon.com because there were a few more color options there.

Gather what you want to paint. You can work with just about any surface. And of course figure out what the perfect color(s) will be for your object(s).

Find a place outside to work on your project. I'll emphasize that you need to do this OUTSIDE. Spray-paint goes everywhere, in it's microscopic ways, no matter how small the item that you're painting. Use a tarp, painting canvas sheet, newspaper, whatever.

Just as you need to prep before painting on other things (like the walls in your home), you need to prep certain pieces. For this piece, the lid didn't need to be prepped (other than using a damp cloth to clean off any dust), but the main jar piece did. I used packaging tape and paper towels to ensure that the glass wouldn't get paint on it.

And then ... you shake that can of spray-paint and go to town. Allow for drying time before you bring it back inside the house. And when you bring it in, oooh-la-la. You have yourself a new, fun piece for your home! (Or in this case, something I painted for my friend's home.)

I had a couple of these fun, thick, textured frames that were brown. Love the frames, but the brown had to go. We just had too much brown and it was time for a crisp white.

As for those 2 frames, I put some scrapbook paper in them instead of photos (we have plenty of photos around here) ... and they hang in our guest room.

Some other things that I attacked in the past few months ... this shelf & the star were both darker, grungy colors.

This wire basket used to be brown.

This mirror used to be burgundy (reddish) and gold.

You saw this mirror at the top of this post. Used to be brown.

If the spray-paint leaves your piece looking a little "flat" you can always distress it or something. This is something you can pick up at the craft store, too. It's with the gold-leafing stuff.

You can dip your finger in the little container or use a stencil brush.

For this frame I did just the right half with the gold distressing. You can see how it just emphasizes the texture and adds a little interest. I've only done this on a few pieces, not everything. Just something to think about.

Here's another frame that I hit with a little bit of the same stuff, but the Pewter color.

Okay, now that you've made it through the longest blog post I've probably ever done (well, the most pictures, anyway) ... I hope you're inspired to paint something. Just one thing. Here is my TOP 5 REASONS TO SPRAY-PAINT SOMETHING:
5. It's quick. Shake a can, point it at your object, and spray. Pretty simple stuff.
4. It's fun. Seriously. Just try it and you'll see what I mean.
3. It's cheap. At about $4 a can, you can splash color into your home on a serious budget.
2. It's resourceful. You can totally take something you already have and bring it to life again (instead of buying something new).
1. It's creative. The simple task of spray-painting is going to make you feel like an artist. It's a total "I-can-do-this" feeling, which means your kids may want to join in the fun, too.
Now go on. Look around your house. What could use a shiny new layer of color and shine? Hmm? And who do you want to share this with? Think of that friend, that neighbor, that sister-in-law, that teenager ... somebody who could use a little pick-me-up with a simple, fun activity like this. Go on and tell them about it.

OK I soo want to go paint something LOL and OMG love love love the orange in your bathroom. Already trying to think of what we can paint that color? hmmmm
Great ideas and love the distressing you did after painting. What great inspiration! Keep it coming!
I too have the spray paint obsession! This summer, I spray painted a couple of old crates I got for super cheap, a stool, an urn, frames and an old wicker chair and a light fixture. Nothing is safe in my home now that I know how easy and quick it is! I used Rub 'n Buff on my urn in bronze to give it more dimension. I live in the midwest so our spray paint season is pretty much over since it is getting too cold outside so will have tons on projects come this Spring. Loved looking at your projects - thanks for sharing.
I love all of your spray painted items - they look fabulous! I went on a spray painting kick this summer, painting the peg board in my scrapbook room, some tin stars, and lots and lots of cupboard hinges. It truly is addictive! Thanks for all the great tips!
I wonder if I could do a table a chair set? Do I HAVE to sand it first????? Those are amazing, I know of one little object in my house I've ad for years that I can do now and was about to toss. Not anymore, I'm gonna go spray paint it! I'll have to figure out about the table and chairs because it's old and just needs NEW -- I was thinking WHITE or off WHITE since I have so much neutral wood color around here.... hmmmmmm Thanks for all the examples!!!
This mega-post of yours could be dangerous. I see some makeovers in my home's future!!!
I love the rustoleum paint and it is addictive. I turned my office into my scrapbook room this summer - 3 grey walls - 1 red wall - lots of white crown molding shelves, desk etc and a set of black IKEA expedit shelving. I didn't worry about the accessories I bought because I knew I was going to spray them white or black to go in the room It is really fun but you definitely need to go outside!!
I'm on a spray paint kick also...even been dreaming about spray painting things. For white items, consider painting with a dark brown or gunmetal gray first, letting it dry, then going over it with a white. Then grab a baby wipe and wipe off a few corners and edges to let the darker color show through. Instant distressing! Did you get the idea from blogs, too? Sycamore 320, younghouselove, kimba's asoftplace, and centsational girl are my faves for great ideas.
I sprayed painted my ugly brass kitchen hardware with a black hammered finish and it's gorgeous! Thanks for all the ideas of other things I could spray paint.
I am seriously laughing at the fact that I have been on a spray painting kick lately and viola! You post a lovely message about it! Brilliant as always! Thanks for the tips!!
Spray paint is definitely a good thing. I have tried it on some fixtures at a previous home. I really like the dimension the pewter dust gave the orange frame.
Color is a good thing also. We have 7 different colors on our walls and one wallpapered room throughout our home. This does not include the bedrooms and there are no accent walls.
HI. Love the idea. Can I spray paint Christmas ornaments??? I want neutral colors and just can't find them?? Thx
I love spray paint. I double love chalkboard spray paint.
The new color looks so fun in your house.
Darn cute. I'm thinking this idea would make some really cheap Christmas gifts! Don't be surprised if your black metal chairs you gave me end up in your mail box the color of your piano room! ha! j/k Hope you had a great T-day!
Have you always had turquoise tiles in your kitchen. I'm a faithful blog reader and had never noticed that before.
LOVING the spray paint....i think it's time to hit some flea markets and garage sales!
Awesome. I have two things under my bed and a can of spray paint never used...a cheapie sale item that has become a "some day"---so inspired now.
BUT--a Question: I have always been confused about what does and what does not need to be prepped!! Can you talk about that a bit? I would so love you for it. hahaha. =) Thanks, Becky. Wonderful projects you have shared.
And you once said you were not a "crafty" girl! ha! These look great!
Would LOVE to see some of your scrapbook pages and digital pages! Please! Please! I need some inspiration!!
I am so going to the store to get paint today! I have some metal stars down in the storage room just collecting dust. They are a bronzy gold color and one is black. I'm thinking a nice crisp white to go in my red living room. (love my red livingroom)
I love that jar that got some new paprika trim that you made for a friend! Beautiful!
Okay... I'm going out to purchase me some spray paint... I've been inspired yet again! ~ kim
Ha!Ha! You are as crazy as the rest of us! It's good to know!
LOVE IT!
If only I could do this with my kitchen cabinets. I really want them white, but I know I need to take them down and paint them with good paint by hand. :-P
I just discovered spray paint as well and I feel the same way!
I love spray paint too! I recently did my metal chairs and table base. I love the hammerite paint with a little texture. Harder to mess up.
There must be something in the air because I have been on this EXACT kick (obsession!) for most of this year too. Something about change, perhaps. I've been spray painting everything in site to add new life to it though. Even going by thrift stores with a friend and looking for fun treasures to rejuvenate with paint. So, I share your obsession. :)
I recently discovered some paint stores have the ability to customize spray paint colors exactly to your wanting . . .
Becky, I know you have done this before, but we would love to see some pics of the decor in your home - full room shots. Have you guys done some wall painting or has your home always had such bright wall colors?
Love that you share home inspiration ideas as well as scrap booking. I love decorating and re-decorating our home. I was on the spray-painting kick a few months ago and also a "labeling everything" kick at about the same time. My dear husband (of 40 yrs) and our sweet little cat were super cautious around me for quite a while. They thought they might get spray-painted and/or labeled if they didn't keep moving. Could have happened! Please keep doing all the wonderful things that you do so well.

Love the orange bathroom!! I have a rocking chair to paint for my little one - got it from Goodwill. You have inspired me to finally do it!! Please share what the exact colors of spray paint were that you used - the orange and the green. thanks!
Love the looks you are creating.
Question the Christmas Card templates that were free to download did you create them? Also I am wanting to create some of my own do you know of any tutorials for creating card templates? Where I could choose my own papers and colors and such?
Thanks for all your help.
Love the orange bathroom. What color and brand is that? Janie
Love what you did with your spray paint. I, too, did some spray painting last fall. Changed up some picture frames that are hanging in my open foyer going up the stairs to the 2nd floor. Amazing what a little can of spray paint can do!! :)
I am with you, love spray paint!!!
I too look at things and think...to spray paint or not to spray paint!!! It's totally addictive and changes the object
%100!!
Hey Becky, just a tip I learned from a friend...aluminum foil! Use foil to cover up funky shaped objects while spray painting. I used it on my fridge doors, you can see it here http://kacisramblings.blogspot.com/2009/11/refrigerator-part-1-spray-paint.html it coveres real well and conforms so easily to any size, shape, etc.
Consider me inspired! Once the Christmas decorations come down in January, I'm always in the mood for a room makeover. This will be just the thing I need!
Thanks for sharing!
Hi lady...where'd you get that very cute jar that you painted the top and bottom orange?
i like the new tile backsplash in your kitchen.
Hmm... I think I need to spray paint my entire house. Seriously. I am not very good at the house decorating thing. I can't wait until my husband graduates so I can redo everything just how I want. Right now it's a collection of stuff. Stuff that we have gathered... I think giving it a pop of color is a great idea!!!! Thanks Becky!
