January school layout
Yesterday's POTD.
Porter sincerely asks me yesterday, Mama, don't you think I should make books when I grow up?

For the record, I hope he never stops calling me Mama.

For those of you who have been doing a monthly book with little students, I apologize that Project Life pushed this on the back burner for January, but here it is ... our January layout. The focus? Computer time. I took a picture like this of each child in Porter's class during their time in the computer lab this month.

No finished sample layout because I'm going to be doing that with the kiddos at school today.
The files, in a few different formats. Take your pick.

And ... since I'm delighted to welcome so many newbies to my blog these days ... Here's the background on this monthly school book that I'm doing with my son and his 1st grade classmates.
The Aug. 31st post is here, titled "school scrapbook" (includes background info, purpose of the project, supplies needed, etc.)
The Oct. 29th post is here, titled "school project" (includes pictures of completed pages to that point and also has all the downloads to that point).

***Added Friday afternoon: Just got back from school. Here's a completed layout.

I have 3 kids and only my youngest (and only boy) calls me mama. I love it too! I am just a devoted fan - but even I can tell that that is your friend Karolyn Davenport's daughter. (No I am not a stalker - but they look a lot alike! I think I should win a prize;)
My DS (5 years) calls me mama too! I melt, I pray he never stops. But he still kisses me good bye in the school yard, I wonder how long that will last???
My daughter does not call me Mama enough - she has reverted to Mom/Mommy. Love when she does say MAMA.
I am doing the school monthly layouts with my daughter - just realized we didn't do one for the December open house in her class. Guess I should get on that!
Porters art work is great!
hey becky,
my daughter is going to be starting kindergarten in the fall and i LOVE this idea. i have one question for you... how did you go about getting the okay to come in and do this at porter's school? i mean, i can't imagine any parent getting upset about it but i didn't know if you were already volunteering there or if you make your once or twice a month appearance just for the scrapbooks. just curious. trying to figure out how i want to do this for my daughter or if i want to do it for her whole class... hmmm. thanks for the inspiration, as always!

Wow ... Porter is a great artist. I loved his Avatar post-it notes art too.
I love this project also. I have only my pages for all the kids but they are in preschool. Cool. thanks
All of my kids call me mama, and it gave me great joy that my son, who turned 13 today, wished me a great day and called me mama before he left for school this morning :)
(Oh, and Michelle, he still kisses me good bye - accompanied by a huge bear hug - in the school yard!)
Love the school project idea, Becky!
Oh how I wish Luke and Porter were still in the same class together. :(
My daughter will be 12 next week, and she still calls me Mama. Love it!
Porter can draw really good and color so good too, he really should make books. I should take a picture of my kids art work more often. I also wonder what you did to get an ok about taking pictures every month at Porter's school. Thanks for sharing.
I'm 42 and, despite a brief trip into "Mom" during high school and college, I still call my mama "Mama". She called her mom "Mama", too...even when her mom was 77!
I am doing what you are doing for my son's 2nd grade class memory books. The teacher is providing me a piece of writing & artwork they have completed and I create a master Page Layout and provide her all of the supplies for each child to create themselves - the Page Kit! I'm punching a lot of squares & circles. I try to provide a few embellishments, a border & title. And I work in the class they day they create them. She is going to keep my examples and use them every year! I'm thrilled to be a part of this and thank you! We didn't want the same old memory books that parents put together and assemble every year. I told her about this marvelous woman who does this book for her kids class and would she like this format and she does! thank you from the bottom of my heart! Stephanie Jones, La Mesa, CA. Faithful blog reader every day - sometimes twice!
When I hear Mama, I'm always reminded of one of my kid's books which I *think* is called. "I Will Always Love You" (don't quote me on that though.
My son (6) often calls me Momster. I'm not amused by this.
T - At first I thought you said your 6 year old called you "Monster" -- LOL!
I'm a fan of "Mama" as well. My 7 year old son only calls me that when he is extra happy or excited about something and I just love it. And speaking of kisses when saying goodbyes at school...just this morning my 4 year old said, (referring to my 7 year old son), "Mom, next school day don't kiss him. The tardy bell will ring and he'll be late." :)
Porter is quite the artist!
I have a 4 y.o. and 2 y.o. They generally call me "mama," too. I love it. Even better - my 2 y.o. randomly started calling me mommia a few months ago. I think it's a combo of mommy and mama. I love it.
Love "mama"! My 8 and 10 yo daughters still call me "mama". So darling. Just received my PL kit and my oldest asked me why I didn't get one for her too! Maybe I'll set her up with a monthly one to keep it manageable and simple. They are taking photography classes after school this spring. Love shaping those little minds! ha! Thanks for all you do.
Have you heard of the book, "Is Your Mama a LLama?" Great fun - check it out. :D
My 5YO sometimes calls me "Mama" but none of the other boys (three older brothers) did that I recall. Now I'm lucky if the teens call me something at all LOL!
Wow, Porter, your art work ROCKS! Yes, MAKE some books...Your Mom can help you get published! :)
I have been checking out your blog for sometime and have been meaning to ask you something. I havve been receiving the CK magazine for a few years. I keep all the issues, but for some reason have lost one. You had a segment in there about Claire with a layout of where her name came from. I am wondering if you still have the layout? I wanted to scraplift it and for the life of me can not find this issue.
I just wanted to let you know that I have been going to my son's K class each month to do a page with them completely inspired by the books that you made with your son's class last year.
It's been an amazing thing for me to see him in school and to take some time out to work on it. It's been good for my husband, too, since he's been taking that morning off work to watch out two little ones at home so I can do it. The kids are so excited about it, and I can't wait to give them their finished books at the end of the year. Thanks for sharing the idea!
I'm 25 and I still call my mom mama. :)
I am so impressed by Porter's art skills. He's really very talented!
I took your school scrapbook idea and turned it into a Daisy scrapbook. At their monthly meetings, they do 2 pages that follow their Journey book or the season (like new year's for January). They've loved it so far.
I would like to have done it with her class, but there are 30 students in it and I'm not sure I could have handled that! LOL.
Thanks for sharing so much of yourself and memory keeping for your family. I've gotten so many good ideas from you!
Question about Photoshop Elements (for blog readers-I know Becky is way too busy for this kind of thing!)
I want to print pics in 2x2;3x3;2x3;4x4;(2) 2x3's on one 4x6... I got Photoshop Elements 7 for Christmas thinking I could learn from Jessica Sprague's website. Her 2 free classes don't address changing the size for printing. I've attempted on my own, but just get more and more frustrated. How can I learn to do this??? I am a step by step learner. I'd appreciate any help.
answer here or email me kaldrum5@msn.com. thanks
My 20 year old Marine son still calls me momma! I love it and hope he never stops. He genuinely calls me momma but a couple of my other kids call me that when they want something. At least I can tell the difference and they aren't pulling anything over on me. LOL!
Nice job Porter!!
Ya! Thanks for going back to "regular blogging" for a bit! I was getting a little worn out with the PL stuff!
I'm 41 & have always called my Mom, "Mama." It may be a deep-south thing, but all my friends call their Moms, "Mama" as well.
I've been looking into doing this, it's nice that you have the pages all done, but I don't see that you give advance notice of what you will be documenting until the month is over. Therefore I wouldn't be able to get any picture to coincide with the pages. Am I missing something? I understand that I could make it for a different month, but I was just wondering? Thanks.
I teach a high school class where we run a preschool in the classroom. My BIGS (high school students) each make a scrapbook for one of the LITTLES (the preschoolers). This format is great and much less daunting for my Bigs to do... time to switch! BTW...my kids are 25, 27 and 29 and still call me Mama, too! I love it!
Becky, thank you so much for taking the time to link up these files! What a super way to keep memories from the school year. The plate is full for this year, but I've saved them and plan to use this next year for my son's class. :)
My 3 kiddos still call me Mama. Though sometimes my 10 year old opts for Mom. I too hope it never ends.
The school class books look so fun. My mom and dad made me one when I was in Kindergarten. My dad even processed the photos in his own darkroom.
I think Porter should make books when he grows up. He is seriously talented!!
Just wanted to say that if those are Porter's hands holding up that picture, he should get some piano lessons with those piano hands of his. Glad Porter wants to make books. If he keeps drawing that way, he'll be a great illustrator, too.
My 28-year-old son still calls me "mama" on occasion. I call my mother "mama." I think it is the southern part of my mom that started this. I love being called any form of "mom," "mama," even "mother" as long as it is said with love.
How do you blog posters say that word mama? Is it MAH-ma, ma-MAH or what?
Hi Becky - thanks so much for the post!! Porter is an amazing artist!! I hope you had a relaxing family weekend!
Becky, I'm loving PL! Also can't wait till my daughter (now 2) starts school, so I can try some of your ideas!
KimTexas
try PhotoSheet it's a free download from http://www.photility.com/PhotoSheet/default.html.
It's Super easy to use to create collage and wallet prints. I discovered it last year, from a recommendation by another follower of Becky's blog. Sorry can't remember her name!
It's made creating collages for 4*3" and 2*3" photos easy! I tried Picsa, but didn't seem to create true 4*6" and lost some of my image when printing.
Enjoy, Kim
Kim (from Australia) thank you so much. I'll give it a try!
kim
Im so glad you're posting these. It's going to make a fun book to look back on.
Becky-I loved what you said about hoping your son never stops calling you Mama. I have a little guy who is 4 and one sure way to make this mama's heart melt is to be called "mama" by him. Ditto on that sentiment. And thanks for all of the words about love, something we all need to be more mindful of every day- not just on the holidays. :)
My kids also call me 'momma' (this is how I like to spell it) and they're 7 and 4. It's tender. Anyway, thanks so much for sharing your talent and ideas. Love the school scrapbook downloads!!
