valentines for the kiddos.

So you have an idea on what to share with other families for Valentines (see "Post-it Love" below if you missed it), but how about the kiddos? Most kids will be exchanging Valentines with their friends, so here's a simple idea for that.

Something I try to do with any of these little holiday exchanges, is make it personal. I want my kids to be involved in creating these little gifts that they give to their buddies. Plus, it's awesome, creative togetherness time. Here's the end result of Porter's Valentines that he'll be exchanging next week with his first grade classmates:

(Claire's art is pretty darn cute too ... she just needs to finish coloring it.)

And this is how it's done. Put some goodies or yummies in small, clear bags. Check the craft store or use plain ol' ziplock bags. I use those most of the time, but happen to have like a thousand of these sturdy poly bags, so that's why I used those instead. Anyway, no matter what you use ... give the bag some sugar. : )

Have your child create a little bit of Valentines art. Let them be creative and express their wishes however they choose. You just need to provide the paper already cut down to a horizontal rectangle, knowing that it will be a bag topper. Porter wanted to write this message and add a few hearts. Appropriate. Then ... scan the art and pop that image a document a couple of times, keeping in mind that the width needs to be adjusted to be whatever your bag width is. Also keep in mind that it will be folded, so your art is toward the bottom with space above it for the folding. This is what my finished document looks like.

Then of course, you print as many as you need, cut the labels, fold them over the bags, and staple. Done.

Here's what the kids did last year. Again, personalizing with their own creativity: "Valentines & Another Give-away"

And another idea from the year before: "A Simple Valentine"

I miss those days. My kids are getting to old (so they say) to hand out valentines! I'm hoping to convince them otherwise. :)

I enjoy your blog so much Becky -- thanks for sharing your life with everyone!

Becky - thanks for another great idea! My 5 yo daughter loves making cards for her friends (she calls them Loving Cards), but her max is three. That's it. If I use your scanning idea, she can make three... and then I can scan / reproduce the additional 25 we need! LOL (I thought about having her do 3 per day, but time has run out.)

Thanks again and Happy Valentine's Day to you and your family!

Becky, I just finished making about 50 little bags like these. I wish I had seen your post earlier, though, because it's much simpler than what I ended up doing (I've been working on and off on these for about a week and a half now).
Very cute idea. Maybe next year I'll try the scan art thing. I just told my friend last night that next year the kids are just getting plain cards that the cricut will make for me. Maybe I can give the bags another chance... :)

This comment is in regard to "Project Life". I just received mine this week. (Missed the deadline to order from you but got it thru Amazon) Love it! The way I have decided to use it is to go back to all of the photos I have sitting in boxes that I have not been able to scrap. I have them divided up into months and years so it should be easy to get everything in cronological order for any one year. I thought this would be the easy way to get all of those pics scrapped without having to worry about how to do an exact 1 or 2 page spread for them and then to worry about how to buy all of the albums that it would take to house all of those layouts. This way I can get one whole year in one book. Awesome!
Due to having company this past week I haven't been able to get into my scrap room yet but I can't wait to get going on my new project - Project Life!

thanks for the files. I just printed mine up. you've made it so easy for us to create something personal to give, and make someone feel special this Valentine's day. For the baggie topper idea- I did this for my preschooler's christmas party this year. We kept it simple with some goodies in ziplocks, and he put christmas stickers on the cardstock toppers. Really made him feel a part of the creative process even though he's not writing yet.

Hi Becky,

You are lucky to do it this way. My kids love to go and get the box kind at the store, there's so many too choose from. Also, our teachers encourage the kids to write the other kids names on the valentines now that they are in elementary school. In pre'k they just signed their names on all of them. My kids and I make a night of it. We put on music, bag of candy for us and they all sit there and write out 18-22 cards each. My kids have never complained about how long it takes and it's good handwriting practice. I will show them this but I think they love picking out the box kind. Thanks for the idea Becky.

I did this with my kindergartener this past weekend. Sooo glad I did - they turned out ADORABLE and it was so easy - I already had the little baggies from my scrapbook organizing stash. I wish we had a forum here so I could post the picture. Thanks for the awesome idea Becky! :-)
