guess.

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Just for fun … can you guess what this is? It’s our POTD from Sunday.

———

Added later:

Yep. You guessed it. We made some kabobs on Sunday. They were perfect. It’s just that a few of them didn’t fit on the main grill. David put those on the upper rack. When he pulled all of the kabobs off, he brought those few “leftovers” down to the main part to let them finish grilling. He thought he had turned off the grill. And of course … we just totally forgot about them.

A few hours later …

I had no idea that veggies could become totally mummified. Oh well. Lesson learned. And makes for a great POTD.

busted. and a deserving winner.

Claire broke our point & shoot camera a few weeks ago. Dropped it pretty hard, I guess. Anyway, I finally got around to looking at the last pictures before “the incident”. These are just a few of the dozens of pictures she took.

Pictures of herself in the mirror, and every random thing around the house. Hey. I’m all for letting kids express creativity and develop skill behind the lens at an early age. I just need to monitor it a little closer next time so that it doesn’t result in another broken camera.

Speaking of photography … are you wondering about the photo shoot give-away? Would you like to know who won?? Oh, ye blog-reading people. This was haaaard. I need to stick to random drawings because choosing a winner this way was not only very emotional, but pretty torturous to choose just one family. But alas — Kara Layne and I would like to congratulate …

MARIANNE in Scottsdale!

Marianne mentioned their family has not done a family photo since her husband died, and “it would be great to have a photo of what our family is now. Just because he is gone doesn’t mean we’re not a family anymore. The saddest thing is before he died we kept saying we needed a family photo and kept putting it off. We never got more than some amateur shots before he died.”

Marianne, please consider yourself hugged and know that we love you. Email kara@karalayne.com and you guys can work out the details of your mini session.

If you are a professional photographer or you know someone who might be interested in doing a complimentary photo shoot like this for a deserving (and local-to-you) family … send an email to customerservice@beckyhiggins.com and let’s do another give-away like this! It’s just too much fun to make someone’s day. : )

saturday around here.

Sunday, March 28th, 2010
It looked a little like this.
A little baking.

(We made – and delivered – mini versions of these.)
A little bit of sticky mess-making.

A little fresh air and sunshine.

A little random jump-over-the-rocketships-over-and-over routine.

A little creative time for the kids.

And for me.

And a lot of other little things, too.
So grateful for a pleasant little Saturday.

PS – Check out these darling Easter ideas! Looks like a new blog called eighteen25.com put on by 3 creative sisters. Heard about it from a friend. Anyway … darn cute. Way to go, girls.

3 words or less: part 3

Friday, March 26th, 2010

First, you guys are killing us … me and Kara Layne. How on earth are we going to choose a winner for the photo shoot? I will say this: Kara Layne says let’s get rid of that rule about having a maximum of 5 people! We don’t want to eliminate a family from the running because they have an extra person or two.

We will announce a winner on Monday.

Now … This is my 3rd edition of answering your questions (your completely-random-all-over-the-place questions). As in the first two installments (this post and this post), I have to answer in 3 words or less.

need some updated family pictures?

First of all, very interesting discussion from yesterday’s post on scrapbooking systems. It’s so interesting to read about what everyone’s doing, what’s working and not working for you. And I definitely need to address more on this again. We can really help each other and inspire each other.

Now … I have some good news. No, this isn’t just good. This is someone’s-gonna-be-really-stoked news. Someone reading my blog right now and leaving their name in the Comments is going to be chosen to have their family photographed by the wonderful Kara Layne.

I learned about Kara Layne only last year and she’s right in our neck of the woods. She photographed our family last Fall and I just adore her skill and her style. She captured our little family beautifully. Kara Layne’s blog also happens to be one that I frequent. Actually, I don’t think I’ve missed a post since I met her. She’s not only full of photographic inspiration, but she’s a captivating writer, a devoted wife and mother, an entrepreneurial spirit, and trying to balance everything like we all are. Bottom line: She inspires. I know many of you browsing the Internet right now are browsing for inspiration.

The bummer news? This one’s really just for locals. Kara Layne is in the Phoenix area — northwest valley, to be specific. So whoever wins this photo shoot needs to travel to her for the photo shoot. So before you rush to leave your name in the comments, here’s what you need to know:

1. You will get a free mini session which would include 45 minutes of shooting

2. You will get your choice of 10 “master images” on disc (fully edited, high res files)

3. This shoot can include up to five people

4. You have to travel to Kara Layne in the northwest Phoenix area (Peoria, Glendale area) for the photo shoot.

Why am I doing this? Why is Kara Layne doing this? We both believe in story-telling. We want someone to receive the gift of beautiful photographs to aid in documenting your family’s story.

So if you’re in Arizona and ready for some new family pictures, here’s your chance to have someone amazing behind the camera, on your behalf, for free. Leave your first name, your city, and maybe even a quick reason why you must, must, must be the winner. : )

Good luck!

Let’s talk about scrapbooking.

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

My blog is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.

One day I’m talking about organizing a bathroom closet, then it’s sharing free downloads to make a book with your kids’ class at school, then it’s a mushy topic like showing love, and then on to bacon. Bacon! But then it’s a health-related topic. And then I’m doing some give-away for fun. And talking about how to nurture creativity in our children. And paying tribute to photography. Then answering your random questions about … everything random.

(If you missed the bacon post, it’s here.)

So … yeah. I’m pretty random. Just the way I like it. But I’m guessing what brought a lot of you here in the first place is scrapbooking.

So let’s talk about scrapbooking for a minute. Specifically, let’s talk about scrapbooking SYSTEMS. The numero uno thing I want to say, and I believe most scrapbookers who work in the scrapbooking industry would also say this … is that there is not one, end-all-be-all approach that works for everyone. We all agree on that, right? Good? Good. Okay.

And that’s precisely why this is such a fun discussion.

The second thing I want to say is that the reason I’m bringing this up now is because I’m having a hard look at my own system right now. Reflecting on what I’ve done for the past 15 years and thinking about my personal evolution in the organization of it all.

My approach is different than yours. And your approach is different than your sister-in-law’s. And her approach is different than … okay, you get it. So let’s get to it. I’ll share with you where I am with my SYSTEM right now. These are some of our ongoing chronological albums.

I transitioned from doing these “traditional” (whatever that means) scrapbooks for our family albums in 2009. Since then, I have been preserving our family’s story with the Project Life format, which has been very liberating and really fun. Now, with the addition of the digital version that we launched for 2010, I am doing one digital Project Life book each year now. This will be our annual family yearbook and I will make copies for each of the kids. (they’re very thin books, so space is no longer a concern as it is with big albums).

Okay, so on to the kids. And the “big albums” I’m referring to. This is where I still do scrapbooking in the “traditional” paper sense.

Porter’s albums are green.
Claire’s albums are yellow.
Crew’s albums are blue.
All albums (including the red family ones) are from We R Memory Keepers.

The main reason I am keeping the kids’ books like this is because kids have stuff. The stuff needs to go somewhere. Plus, let’s be honest. Scrapbooking is just in my blood. I gotta do it. I enjoy it. Just in smaller doses than I used to. That’s why I feel really, really good about our family stories being in a different format now.

I spent years and years deeply engrossed in the creative side of scrapbooking. Now, 3 kids later, I still enjoy keeping scrapbooks for each of our kids. My pages are simple. I still get to play with pretty papers and fun letter stickers and I still enjoy the art of putting a complete layout together. But I keep it really simple. My main purpose in doing books for my children isn’t to feed my creative spirit. (Although that’s certainly a fun side effect.) It’s to record their story and tell them how loved and valued they are. It’s to document their milestones, achievements, struggles, friends, excursions, family history, and education.

Lately, however … as in the past several months, I haven’t touched scrapbooking stuff. It’s been on the back burner. It’s been a busy season and I’ve been perfectly okay letting stuff pile up a bit.

I have just been sticking items on top of the albums lately. The pile is patiently waiting for me to organize and put away in albums. And I will. I can sense those creative juices flowing just a bit. I can tell that I’m ready to do a few layouts. Still need to finish Crew’s first year (one layout per month — still love that system) and I have a few school layouts to do for Porter’s and Claire’s books.

Here’s the bottom line for my CORE SYSTEM:

[ one ] Each child has a chronological, ongoing series of scrapbooks. The big-picture goal is that each child will have about 6-7 albums total that will cover their entire childhood, from birth through high school. My school kit will be the backbone of this system and create natural flow throughout the albums.

[ two ] I am doing an online family yearbook of each calendar year (Project Life) and printing copies for each child and for us to keep here at home. Right now I’m keeping up with a-picture-a-day and I love it. The big-picture goal is that everyone will have a series of skinny yearbooks representing our family life.

Okay, your turn. If you have a system of keeping memories & photos & stories that you want to share — because it really works for you — please do share with us. Give us the bottom line CORE SYSTEM. Can’t wait to learn from you!

Treats on-the-go: Have some options.

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

First, a quick little shout-out to Karen, a fellow blog reader in Round Rock, Texas. I believe today is her 50th birthday!

———–

So am I the last ones to try these little containers?

First of all, my kids have never liked Cheerios as a snack. But really — Cheerios was totally smart to come up with this little number. And honestly, it’s the best container I’ve been able to find (without doing an extensive online search) to house some snacks for my little ones. Picked them up at WalMart.

Tip of the day: Use a label maker to easily identify what’s in the container and have a few options on-the-go in case your child decides that NO! They don’t want goldfish! Or NO! They don’t want animal crackers! Heaven knows, I’ve had my fair share of Target meltdowns. I’ve been “that mom” that gets the looks of seriously-you-can’t-tame-your-child?

I’m still learning that snacks can be the magical solution to combat that kind of behavior. That, and a pep talk in the car before we get to the store. Which, as we all know, does not work with an 18-month-old.

top 5 things to note today

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Hello, and Happy Monday! Did you notice that we have the Project Life GALLERY up & running now? If you haven’t checked it out yet, pop on over there. And know that we will work through a few technical kinks this week. In the meantime, some of you have already begun uploading your images and ideas to share. Thank you!

——-

[ ONE ]

The winner of the PeachyCheap.com $100 shopping spree is … Cassie in Fort Lewis, Washington! I have to say, it wasn’t easy choosing a winner this time. I thoroughly enjoyed the creativity you put into your 3-worded reasons why you should win the prize. So many of you are deserving of such a lucky thing to happen to you.

Cassie, good luck with your 3rd deployment coming up this summer, and send an email to brooke@peachycheap.com and she’ll hook you up.

[ TWO ]

If you are outside of the U.S. and you want the Project Life kit, go HERE and Tammy will take care of you. I noticed there are only about 100 kits left. Also, the kits are shipping now. This is not for pre-order. It’s buy-it-and-they’ll-ship-it-right-out. : )

[ THREE ]

If you’ve been working on your digital Project Life, I just wanted to send out a little friendly reminder that our big promotion of 20% off the printing cost is about to expire the end of this month. Everyone can play around and make a book (or more) for free. You just pay when you’re ready to have your book printed and shipped to you. OR … you can pay in advance (like … now) and save 20%. Again, that promotion ends March 31st. Go HERE for all the details.

[ FOUR ]

After posting a link to get another one of my handwriting fonts for free, fellow blog reader, Shannon, wanted to research how to get her own handwriting as a font. And she wants to share her findings with YOU! Click on her note to be able to read Shannon’s message easier, and then if you’re interested, you can visit YourFonts.com.

Just so you know, I have not personally used this service, but I wanted to pass along this cool find … from one blog reader to another. Thanks for sharing, Shannon!

[ FIVE ]

This is the most important thing I want to share with you today: THANK YOU FOR HELPING ME … HELP YOU. Last week I invited you to email me your feedback about a school kit I’m working on and the emails flooded my inbox in the best way. I’ve spent hours pouring over those emails … reading every single one, word for word. While I can’t possibly respond to the emails (that would take away from time spent on actually developing the kit) I am truly grateful for your input. My level of motivation and enthusiasm about the school kit was already pretty high and now it has quadrupled, people.

Thank you for inspiring me. Thank you for sharing. Thank you for the kindness in your emails and your blog comments. We really do have much in common, you and me. We want to preserve our stories, take great pictures, create beautiful books about our lives and our family’s story. But we want to simplify the process. We want our stuff organized and accessible so it can be enjoyed. We want to be realistic about what we can accomplish. We want to actually GET IT DONE. Not just think about it and plan to get around to it later. We don’t want to stress of “creative” details and embellishments.

Elizabeth said it best: “So want to scrapbook, so don’t have the time.”

I hear ya, Elizabeth.

You see, we help each other. You help me understand what your frustrations are in trying to manage all the stuff that comes home with your kids from school. You tell me what what you’d love to see in a kit. I do my best to provide inspiration and ideas and solutions, to help make life a little sweeter for you. And you make life a little sweeter for me too.

Uh-oh. I’m about to break into song, so I’m going to slip away now.

senior photo shoot

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

This lovely girl is our niece, Kyra. I know! Gorgeous, right? I took her senior pictures yesterday. Thanks to her equally-lovely sister Cyera, we got some good, genuine smiles and had such a great time. While Kyra’s not necessarily seeking for votes, I am totally interested in your input. Leave a comment and vote for your ONE favorite. Just for fun.

Next step: Make Kyra’s graduation announcement.

Project Life GALLERY is here!

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

Eeek! So excited!

It’s been a long time in coming and it is finally HERE: The Project Life GALLERY.

(Hear the choir singing?)

Okay, so you’ll notice 3 categories:

1. I Am Project Life. Browse through a sea pictures of fellow Project Life participants. This is a fun glimpse of the Project Life community. You may see someone you know and some of you may even see yourself in there if you emailed me a picture.

2. Project Life Photography. This is a place for you to share your very best photographs that might inspire others to capture the ordinary, or the extraordinary, moments of life. [a.k.a. POTD]

3. Project Life Layouts. Just like what it sounds like. No matter what your angle or take on the project, share your full layouts that are specific to Project Life (not just any ol’ scrapbook layouts).

Anyone can browse through the albums. Anyone can create an account and start posting their own images. And I encourage you to do so. Go on. Check it out. Start sharing. Start enjoying. And please know that if there are any technical issues, we will address them. Feel free to leave a comment here if you notice something that needs-a-fixin’.

Go HERE.
