Claire broke our point & shoot camera a few weeks ago. Dropped it pretty hard, I guess. Anyway, I finally got around to looking at the last pictures before “the incident”. These are just a few of the dozens of pictures she took.
Pictures of herself in the mirror, and every random thing around the house. Hey. I’m all for letting kids express creativity and develop skill behind the lens at an early age. I just need to monitor it a little closer next time so that it doesn’t result in another broken camera.
Speaking of photography … are you wondering about the photo shoot give-away? Would you like to know who won?? Oh, ye blog-reading people. This was haaaard. I need to stick to random drawings because choosing a winner this way was not only very emotional, but pretty torturous to choose just one family. But alas — Kara Layne and I would like to congratulate …
MARIANNE in Scottsdale!
Marianne mentioned their family has not done a family photo since her husband died, and “it would be great to have a photo of what our family is now. Just because he is gone doesn’t mean we’re not a family anymore. The saddest thing is before he died we kept saying we needed a family photo and kept putting it off. We never got more than some amateur shots before he died.”
Marianne, please consider yourself hugged and know that we love you. Email kara@karalayne.com and you guys can work out the details of your mini session.
If you are a professional photographer or you know someone who might be interested in doing a complimentary photo shoot like this for a deserving (and local-to-you) family … send an email to customerservice@beckyhiggins.com and let’s do another give-away like this! It’s just too much fun to make someone’s day. : )

Your post reminded me of my childhood photograpy-before digital cameras. I would take pictures of Ken and Barbie-action shots of them at the beach, etc and lego spaceships hanging from clear thread like they were "flying"… then my mom would pay to have the film developed only to have a roll of toy pictures!
How wonderful!! Congratulations Marianne!!

My 4 yr old does the same thing, which is great for days when I don't have a POTD! But a rule at our house is if the kids are taking pictures, they MUST have the strap on their wrist (kinda like when playing Wii!) which I think has helped tremendously in keeping our camera safe. Granted it is just about 7 yrs old but still, I don't want to have to purchase one again under the gun.
I do love it when the kids get behind the camera. My youngest takes the most interesting shots.. I like to save them in an album entitled "The World Through Indi's eyes" some of the shots are pretty cool too because he isnt obsessed with getting faces etc so interesting angles occur. Although I must admit there are far too many shots of my backside in there! LOL
Yea! Congratulations!
Congratulations to Marianne. I am so happy for her and her family to have this. As for Miss Claire, cute, cute, cute. I love that she spent time trying to capture herself taking pictures.
My 4 year old son does the same thing with my camera. I am all the time putting my chip in my labtop and I've found up to 50 pictures that I don't remember taking!!! He's actually getting pretty good. Maybe he taking after his momma!!!
She sounds so deserving of this! Glad you didn't do the random drawing, even if it means I had no chance for this one;).
Congradulations Marianne, how exciting and much deserved. I love that Claire took pictures of herself, so cute at this age. Too bad about your camera though.
Congrats to the winner! So deserving!
I don't know what you're looking for in your next point and shoot camera but I got my husband the Olympus Stylus 1030 SW last year for his hunting & fishing trips. It's shockproof, water-proof, freeze-proof etc. In other words…the perfect camera for my kids! Just thought I'd let you know about it.
Becky,
You need to make a rule to use the wrist strap when using the point and shoot. It has worked with my kids. I have a daughter that loves to borrow the camera and take random shots of everything.
Becky – Just a suggestion – I own an Olympus Tough 8000 point & shoot and it is virtually indestructible…it is totally waterproof (yes we have taken it scuba diving!) and can be dropped from 6' without a problem! Easy to use and GREAT PIX…we LOVE LOVE LOVE this camera! (there is also an OT 6000 that's just as great the main difference is the depth of water you can use it at.)
You are always so great to share with us I thought I'd share with you! Have a great day.
God bless you Becky and Kara! What an incredibly wonderful and loving thing to do. I'm thrilled you chose Marianne! I'm positive her family will cherish and appreciate this act of kindness forever!
Thank you!! I honestly couldn't believe it when my sister sent me a text very late last night that said "I think you just won a photo shoot on Becky's Blog." It had been a particularly bad day for me. I went to my computer and sure enough there was my name and my comment. I burst into tears. My sister burst into tears. I'm crying again right now. It's so hard not to have regrets about the things missed and the things that will never be. I try hard to be positive, and I know there are so many others out there facing trials at varying degrees. Thank you for choosing me and my children. I've looked at Kara Layne's photos and I can't wait.
My 4yo does the exact same thing. We've had to bring "little george" (our P&S) back from the dead a few times. But there is always something new to see in her photos and many times, I'll end up using one for a POTD.
You'll have to share what new camera your getting.
Hey Becky…love your blog…I have a question for you…it's a bit crazy but I am searching for the perfect coffee table decor and I was wondering what is on your coffee table??? It's the one place in my home I struggle with…seriously! My kids are now 10 and 7 so gone are the days of Legos and baby toys. They can actually keep their hands off my decor now so I am looking for something different, creative and colorful. I am not into fake flowers and I have a place for magazines so I am now on the hunt for a cute coffee table idea…what's on yours???
We bought our 6 yr old his own point-and-shoot. The first thing I did was make a neck/shoulder strap out of black ribbon so that every time he gets it out to use it, he puts it on around his neck to prevent dropping. Makes him feel a little grown up to have his own camera, and it's more like mine with a neck/shoulder strap.
Becky, my husband and I got the same point-and-shoot a few years ago (if it's good enough for a professional, it's good enough for me!), and about ten months after we got it my kids broke it. I didn't know what had happened… until we got the camera back from the shop, and we saw the video of my little guy saying, "Parker, push it back in!" At least we have documentation, right?
rule #1, the only way you're allowed to use the camera: ALWAYS put the strap around your wrist!
Hey there, I’m a long-time lurker and also have been too shy to submit a comment.
This is a great web blog. I visit you frequently and we get always valuable updates, regards!
