First of all, very interesting discussion from yesterday’s post on scrapbooking systems. It’s so interesting to read about what everyone’s doing, what’s working and not working for you. And I definitely need to address more on this again. We can really help each other and inspire each other.
Now … I have some good news. No, this isn’t just good. This is someone’s-gonna-be-really-stoked news. Someone reading my blog right now and leaving their name in the Comments is going to be chosen to have their family photographed by the wonderful Kara Layne.
I learned about Kara Layne only last year and she’s right in our neck of the woods. She photographed our family last Fall and I just adore her skill and her style. She captured our little family beautifully. Kara Layne’s blog also happens to be one that I frequent. Actually, I don’t think I’ve missed a post since I met her. She’s not only full of photographic inspiration, but she’s a captivating writer, a devoted wife and mother, an entrepreneurial spirit, and trying to balance everything like we all are. Bottom line: She inspires. I know many of you browsing the Internet right now are browsing for inspiration.
The bummer news? This one’s really just for locals. Kara Layne is in the Phoenix area — northwest valley, to be specific. So whoever wins this photo shoot needs to travel to her for the photo shoot. So before you rush to leave your name in the comments, here’s what you need to know:
1. You will get a free mini session which would include 45 minutes of shooting
2. You will get your choice of 10 “master images” on disc (fully edited, high res files)
3. This shoot can include up to five people
4. You have to travel to Kara Layne in the northwest Phoenix area (Peoria, Glendale area) for the photo shoot.
Why am I doing this? Why is Kara Layne doing this? We both believe in story-telling. We want someone to receive the gift of beautiful photographs to aid in documenting your family’s story.

Oh, Becky, I'd love love love to win this photoshoot for my family. I have been overweight most of my life and really shy away from having my picture taken. In fact, I have very, very few pictures at all with my husband or children. I love to scrapbook and document our life, but I'm never the one seen in the photos. I would love to win this – we haven't had a family photo taken in the past seven years (right after my youngest was born) and we even live in Peoria. However, after reading many of the comments posted, it seems that there are a lot of people who really need and deserve an opportunity like this. My name is Anne Marie. I live in Downtown Phoenix, so traveling is not a problem at all. Why I'd like to be the winner: both my boyfriend and are are medical students and are therefore living solely off of loans. Tonight, while studying, we mentioned how it'd be nice to get an official portrait taken sometime soon… but ended up reluctantly shrugging it off due to the expense not being a 'necessity' and therefore not justifiable at this time. I would love to win this for our daughter & her family. She & her husband & 10 year old twin girls have had a pretty difficult last couple of years. They were among the earliest to be hit by economic problems — losing their home & job within a two-week period of time. They were fortunate to have family with larger houses than ours with whom they were able to live. It was a real struggle, but they have finally been able to rent their own place & have a bit more job security. They have to be extremely frugal, so the frequent photos of their young daughters & their family are a distant memory. They are a darling little family & we love them so much and are so proud of them.

We were extremely blessed to get a call from Michigan one afternoon in August 2009 asking if we could get there ASAP and if we still were hoping to adopt. We met our newborn baby girl the following day. Due to the expenses of being stuck in MI for two weeks before we could bring her home, we have been unable to afford much in the way of photography. My daughter is 7 months old now, crawling, standing, babbling, and I feel like I need to be doing more to tell her story. Not only that, but we still don't have a family picture with all of us in it! We have not done a family photo since my husband died, and it would be great to have a photo of what our family "IS" now. Just because he is gone doesn't mean we're not a family anymore. I'm a photographer, but it's extremely hard to get pictures of my own family! Of course, I can't take pictures of myself! And to top it all of, my four year old son has Autism, so he's pretty wiggly and unattentive, so I can't sit down my family in front of a tripod and then run and get in the picture. I would LOVE some beautiful candid type shots of our family just being together and loving each other.

My parents live in Phoenix. They have their 50th anniversary this year. My dad was also diagnosed with Parkinson's disease this year. A normally outgoing talkative man has become quite withdrawn. The best way to spend money is on family photos framed nicely all around the house- it shows your kiddos where your priorities are and builds their self esteem! It's a great way to remember/capture where we have lived (since we've moved to 6 different states in 13 years) We move this July to Alabama and are leaving behind wonderful friends, a great school, and a church we love. He divorced several years ago & is on the cusp of a new life with his son and girlfriend (hopefully soon-to-be fiancee!). 11 months ago, our family grew by two – our adoption was finalized and our son Joseph (7) and daughter Solange (8) from DRC (Congo) came home. My reason is simple…..I am the one who takes the pictures…so my little family of four…most times looks like a family of three…with me absent.
