Important message today:
- If you find a little something that doesn’t belong to you, turn it in to the place (store, venue, etc.) where you found it. The thing is, you all know that. You’re good people. I’m just bummed that not everyone is honest like that. Thank you for being good and honest.
- If you take your camera anywhere with you (we all do), do yourself a favor and label the camera with at least your phone number so that if it is found, the Nice Person will know how to return it to you. Do that right now.

Sorry to hear about your camera. I’ve had that happen before and it’s such a bad feeling.
Oh, I hope that person is overcome with longing to do right and turns it in over the weekend! Also possible: a small child found it and is hiding it away as a special treasure, and this weekend his or her mom or dad will find it and figure out where it must have come from and take it back to turn in!
Also: I’m going to label my stuff rightthisveryminute!
Total bummer. That is frustrating, very frustrating.
there is something that has been weighing on my heart for months now. i am a second grade teacher. a few months back one of my very sweet little girls told me her dad found an iPod nano on the bus. he brought it home and her mother loaded music on it for the child. i asked her if her dad had tried to find the owner. she said, no, he just took it quickly. sigh. it is bad enough that people take things that don’t belong to them, but to think they also teach their children that it’s ok…well, it breaks my heart. i picture mom and dad gloating about how they got a free iPod, and someone else very sad because they no longer have one.
I so hope someone hands this in Becky, good luck…please nice person hand in the camera for Becky
I must share a nice person story: here in Minnesota we have something we refer to as Minnesota Nice; I’ve actually been on the receiving end of this more than once! This winter, I lost my iPhone…I was SURE it was a goner, as was my husband. But…so NOT the case: a Nice Person had found it in the Wal-Mart parking lot and turned it in. Wow! I was shocked…as was the lady behind the counter who gave me such skeptical feedback to my inquiry! Hang in there! Maybe you aren’t out of luck YET.
What great advice and I will do that right now. I carry a little camera and could easily lose it. I carry a little camera and a flip. Do you flip? I heart the Flip!! Totally different videos than a bigger video camera. It’s like the POTD of Video. Yeah – that’s it.
1. Yes
2. Ok, I will. And good advice. Right up there with BACK UP YOUR PICTURES!
- so bummed for you. I still am holding out for the conviciton of heart on the discover-er of your camera to DO THE RIGHT THING!! I still believe…..
Oh Becky, I can so relate. I set my camera down at a park to pick up my friend’s son – I had taken so many great photos that day of the park and of my friend’s children. I had my hands full and totally forgot to pick my camera back up. I LOVED that camera but was more upset about losing the photos that I had taken that day.
Keep an eye out at http://www.ifoundyourcamera.blogspot.com/ maybe some honest person out there will post some of your photos and you can get your camera back. I’m so sorry you lost it – I know it makes you sick – especially since it was so new.
Becky ~ So sorry they haven’t turned your camera in yet!
I promise not all people are bad! Recently, within a 48 hour stretch, I had 2 encounters with “Thank God you were honest”! I left my Domo (think brown stuffed toy that kinda looks like a brownie with big teeth) at the Red Rocks Amphitheater in CO which was later turned into the Lost & Found and then the very next day, I accidentally left a bag of books/magazines in a public bathroom (also turned in)… so, though these items are definitely different than a digital camera, they were also things that could have easily been brought home to someone else’s house … but these people were kind, and they turned them in… I think that Cameron may be right that it may have been picked up by an itty bitty and it’s just a matter of time before their parents find it
Best of luck and I will hope for a speedy return of your camera for you!!
I am so sad for you! I thought this happened to me once (totally thought my camera was lost and never to be returned), but I ended up having it stashed away in a purse I had forgotten I had used. I hope such relief finds you and your camera!
Crossing my fingers for you.
Becky, I am so sorry. I found a really nice blackberry phone in a bathroom at the fair. I was so worried it wouldn’t get to the rightful owner but all i could do was turn it in. It was a great lesson for my kids. Talking about finding things etc.
Vaelrie
Becky,
I hope that someone turns it in for you! Can you post your note in the store?
When I rented my first apartment, I went right out and bought purple pansies to go on my porch. The next day they were stolen. I made a sign similar to yours and posted it on my porch. They weren’t returned… but I have faith that sometimes things really are given back. And I hope that your story has that positive ending!!!!
THANKS FOR THE REMINDER, BECKY! After I got home from Target a couple of days ago I was frustrated to find an extra bag with a few things in it that weren’t mine. I thought I’d been charged for them. After examining the receipt I realized that I had NOT been charged for them (yay), but realized that someone who HAD been charged for them got home and didn’t have their stuff. I will be turning it back in the next time that I head to town – and your reminder will help me not to forget. I am still holding out hope that you and your camera will be reunited.
Becky,
What a total bummer. I am so sad for you. I am hoping and praying that you get your camera back. You picture is so cute and I’m sure it will help in finding it.
Becky: I’m so sorry you lost your camera!!! It’s sad because there are good people out there. My friend left her purse at Home Depot last week and a good person turned it in (all cash and valuables in tact). Thank you for the reminder – I am going straight to my trusty Brother label maker and do two for my SLR and P&S right now!
that sucks! I hope someone returns it to you…. we lost ours once at the pool and thought it was gone for good and the next summer we saw it hanging in the concession stand…. someone had turned it in! I hope you get yours back!
My heart goes out to you! It is my biggest fear to lose or break my camera, as it is SO important to always have one available for daily photo taking! But I haven’t labeled mine…so I’m going to right now!
I have a little story…when I was in 10th grade I left my purse in a park and was truly mortified! I went back to the park an hour later and a man had my purse in hand and was trying hard to find the owner! I am so happy that there are good people in the world.
So sorry, Becky. But we can all think positively that you will get it back. Just put a label on mine, so thanks for the reminder.
I really hope you get your camera returned, but I won’t hold my breath. There are less and less people who do the right thing. If you get it back, my faith in people being good will go up a notch or two.
Oh Becky, what a shame. I am so sorry about that. Hope the nice person returns it to you.
1. Not all people who don’t turn in lost items to the stores where they found them are
bad. Some just figure that the person who they turn it in to will never find it’s
respective owner. And there it will sit until someone takes it home.
2. If you don’t label something, then how does it find it’s way back to it’s respective
owner. Don’t we teach our kids that? Clothes, pencil box, crayons, etc.
3. Not all people who shop in Phoenix read your blog. really.
4. Sorry for your loss. But I hope it’s the photos that you long for and not the actual
cost of the camera. really.
I’m so sorry about your camera Becky. I hope someone turns it in for you. You should put this picture and message in your local newspapers and up at the stores if possible. I have always done the right thing and teach my kids the right thing to do also. My daughter Summer used her own bday money and bought a lot of stuff from Claire’s and left it on a bench to tie her shoe. I didn’t realize because we had a lot of other bags. Well some nice person turned it in and when we got home and it was missing she was in tears. I called Claire’s and was told someone had turned it in already to them. So back in the car all the way back to the mall. So I think there are some nice people out there that do the right thing. Did you at least have some of the pictures uploaded already I hope. Good luck!!
Becky, I am so sorry!! I hope some nice person turns it in!! I have been on both sides, I did have someone turn in my little lost camera once and my faith was renewed. But last year a few hours after my daughter was born, my mother in law gave me three beautful little birthstone kid charms for a necklace she also bought for me and I was so thrilled!! The day I was checking out of the hospital i placed them on the little nightstnad and forgot to grab them. I realized as soon as I got home and immediately called the hospital and they were instantly lost and never to be found. I called almost everyday for two months. I felt mad and embarassed that someone took my lovely jewelry and upset that at 34 I couldn’t be responsible for something.
Too the last poster, be nice please. Have you ever had your feelings hurt or been upset with yourself that you lost something and you wished and hoped someone would return it? Plus it doesn’t matter if the loveliest of all cute pictures are on that lost camera of Becky’s, cameras are expensive to replace.
Becky, I am so sorry to hear that. I hope they get a conscience and turn it in to the store.
I took so long to type, that I meant for the last kindness response to Teresa.
Your sweet note/plea for the return of your camera would melt even the hardest of hearts. I hope your camera finds its way home soon!
When you take something home that you find, whether labeled or not, whether it cost 5 cents or lots of dollars, it’s wrong. really. Don’t we all teach our children that?
@ Dee- well said!!!
Becky, so sorry to hear about your camera. Hopefully, it will turn up. My best advice is to put your email address on your camera. This worked for us. My son had a camera when we were visiting Seoul, Korea and put it down when he was playing. When we realized it was gone, we thought we’d take the chance and check our email. Sure enough someone had turned it in and they sent us an email and we got it back, half-way round the world. Luckily, we were still in Seoul. No cost to email. Phone numbers don’t work so well outside North America. I suggest email labeling to everyone as it worked for us. Good luck!
Dangit Becky. That is something someone who loses their debit card and drivers license while skiing down a mountain does. Looks like two amazing people are a lot alike!!!!
YEE HAW for the new search engine on your sidebar. I have needed this oh so many times. Let’s talk soon. Got your message a little late you were probably eating by then. Loves.
Becky – I am so sorry you lost your camera. Could happen to any of us. Hopefully some nice person will turn it in and you can get it back. Just today my husband and I found 12 dollars at Culver’s and turned it in to the cashier. I knew it wasn’t mine and if I lost it I would hope someone would turn it in. I once lost my purse on the first day of our vacation with all my cash, credit cards and cashiers checks. A nice person turned it in and we got everything back on our way home. There are some wonderful people out there I hope one of them finds your camera.
Lo siento senora! I hope you get your little camera back.
I have also heard of taking a picture of a notecard with your name and info on it and locking that picture, so it can’t be accidentally deleted. It’s an easy way to keep your information on there, too.
I hope your little camera makes it back to you…retrace your steps and try all of the losts and founds you can think of. Power of positive thinking sweet pea.
hope you can still find it with all the pics you took intact…
Oh no! I hope someone turns it in! That is just mean!
I totally feel for you. Someone stole my camera (an inexpensive point and shoot) years ago before the digital age. It had pictures from my best friend’s wedding on it. Fortunately they were just my candid shots, but I’d give anything to have the pictures of the two of us on her special day. I’ll pray that your camera gets returned to you.
Oh man. That sucks.
I’m sorry this happened to you, Becky. I’m hoping for a speedy return.
Like Kayla, I’ve taken a picture of a paper (mine was just scrawled, nothing special), that had my name, address, phone and e-mail on it and locked that into the camera. I’ve misplaced it a few times, and while my heart was racing, I knew that if it was lost and if an honest person found it, I should get it back.
My husband dropped his wallet at a gas station while we were traveling once and it was returned (mailed from several states away) with everything still in it, and I found $100 in Wal-mart once and reported it. So, we’ve been on both sides of doing the right thing.
Although I take diligent care to keep my camera at my arm’s length I haven’t put my name on it! I’ll do that right now! Hope you find your camera Becky!
Hi Becky,
I’m sure you’ve done this, but have you retraced your route in the stores? My son lost his beloved little monkey in target and when i went back a couple of days later, he was right there on the shelf…tucked in between the kleenex boxes. You might want to make another round and check down low! Bring a friend….4 eyes are better than 2!
Praying that you find it…what a horrible feeling and major bummer.
Mandy
Becky…so sorry to hear that this happened. I hope you get your camera back soon!!
[...] This post was mentioned on Twitter by Becky Higgins. Becky Higgins said: Dear Nice Person: I know you're out there. http://tinyurl.com/2f49a5j [...]
Geez Becky, I am so sorry to hear about your camera. I will say a little prayer for you tonight that a “nice person” found it. I would be absolutely SICK if something happened to my camera.
My husband was actually one of those “nice people” tonight; it made me super duper proud of him. We were out to dinner, just the 2 of us for once, and driving slowly through the parking lot, searching for a place to park (it was in a rather busy area). He just happpened to see a young boy, maybe 16, walking and something fell out of his pocket. Jason pulled up to it and it was 3 20 dollar bills folded up. He yelled out to the young man and returned it. The boy didn’t even realize it had fallen out of his pocket. He was with a girl so we were thinking maybe they were on a date or something. How embarrassing would it have been for that boy if he had started to pay for dinner and his money gone???
Oh man. That really stinks. Hope someone is NICE! I have lost so many things that have eventually been turned back in. Keep hoping!
I’m sorry for you! I’m so paranoid that that will happen to me that I take a photo of a card that has my name and phone number on it first thing on my camera so that if I do loose it that is the information that the person that found my camera will see when they look at my photos. I hope an honest person returns your camera!
That sucks.
Here’s a tag I have on my camera/bag: http://vol25.typepad.com/photos/ttv_prints/camera-tag-sm.html
We need more nice people in the world.
My very organized husband printed out a sheet of clear return address labels with my cell phone and email addy on them. He stuck them on everything-esp the cameras, camera cases, and the like.
And it worked! My son was carrying the camera and left it at the Franklin Institute in Philly. My cell rang while we were on a different floor of the museum and it was a good samaritan who had found the camera and called. I was able to run up the stairs and retrieve the camera right away. I am sure, had it not been so incredibly easy to see a way to return the camera, that it would have been lost forever.
I hope you find yours-I’ve lost a camera before and it’s sad.
How very sad!! I just saw something on the news this morning called Tigertag.com. You purchase a Tiger Tag from them (I briefly looked at it and it looks like it’s only $1.99). The Tiger Tag has a number on it and their website. You place the Tiger Tag on your electronic device and register your equipment on their website. If something is lost or found, you can log onto their website to report it. Then you pay the postage to get it back. I am in no way affiliated with Tiger Tag, but thought it looked like a great thing and have already ordered mine.
I hope you get your camera back!!
From one Becky to another Becky, I can assure you that there are nice people still out there. As inspiration for always doing the right thing, I’ll share a little story about my friend.
Two weeks back, my friend was walking to the park with her kids and stumbled upon a beautiful diamond ring in the grass. She turned it into the police and they returned it to the rightful owner – an 80 year old little lady. Long story short, the little lady thanked my friend for returning her ring to her by giving it back to my friend! It just so happens that the ring is worth $40k!
I went to see Iron Man 2 last weekend. I heard a cell phone (or so I thought) drop behind me. I looked back and didn’t see anyone bending to pick anything up, so thought I must have been wrong. After the movie, I turned around and was at eye level with the floor of the seats behind me. I thought I should look, just in case. And low and behold, something black and silver and shiny and flat was under the chair behind me and to my right. It was either an iphone or a itouch. The face was cracked from where it had been dropped. I tried it, and it still worked. Had lots of apps and everything. I turned it in as I was leaving the building. I figure someone will miss it soon after leaving the theatre. And I would have wanted someone to turn something of mine in if I had dropped/lost it.
Becky, just bought a book that I’ve been reading to my class of first graders called “E is for Ethics.” It’s a collection of 26 little short stories with questions on values. Today we read “honesty” and it inspired such a great conversation with my class. I sometimes think that some parents don’t encourage or teach their children to do the right thing and be that “nice person.” Thought this was a cool book that tied in to your post. Hope you find your camera :0)
Hello there! Just here to ask you what do you like more, bacon or oranges. Just me and my friend having an argument
