hand-me-downs

My favorite thing about hand-me-down clothing is putting Crew in something that takes me back six years and reminds me of Porter’s younger years. Babies grow so fast.

crew is 3 or 4 days younger than my little boy and when i scrolled down and saw his blonde hair my heart skipped a beat! he looks so adorable!

I have two boys that are 8 years apart and I saved a lot of my first son’s clothes. It’s very cool to see both of them in the same outfit years later. It’s always a fun trip down memory lane. :)

  3. Marcey says:

I am going through the same thing right now with my boys! They are 3 1/2 years apart. It is so fun to look at pics of them wearing the same clothes. I enjoy seeing how they are both different and alike!! So fun!

  4. Stephanie Jones says:

Does Porter look just like his Dad or what?!

  5. Traci says:

Awww, I love to do that with my two daughters (also almost six years apart). In fact, I should post pictures of the girls in the same outfits on my blog!

  6. Claudia says:

I totally agree! My boys are 7, 5 and 19 months old and the youngest is wearing things that the 2 older ones both wore!

  7. Alayna says:

I have one of each, so no hand-me-downs to younger sibs (none that I’ll admit to at least – please don’t tell my 3 year old some of his jeans are Girls Jeans :) ) but I have given all my baby clothes to good friends and family and love seeing something I remember my kids wearing.

  8. Gloria says:

There is nothing wrong with hand-me-downs, have a 12 and 3 a year old and I went through that myself since I am the youngest of nine!!

  9. Carole B. says:

My kids wear clothes that a good friend of mine sister gave me(she has 3 girls & a boy)(her boy is a year older then my son)& I have a girl 5yrs & a boy almost 4.When my daughter grows out of clothes I pass them onto my niece for her daughter.

  10. Gina says:

Even though my girls were born bam, bam, BAM (2003, 2004 and 2005…seriously) I still love seeing the “little” one in something her big sisters wore. And, I actually have a couple of outfits that were “gender neutral” so their baby brother has worn them, too! (born in 2008) I love hand-me-downs!

  11. Lori says:

That is exactly why I started scrapbooking. I have 3 boys and they all wore the same clothes and looked so much alike when they were little. I knew alot of the photos I would be the only one who knew when the photo was taken and which boy it was!

  12. Megan says:

II love hand me downs also! Not only from my older son to my younger- but from my Sister-in-law as well. My little one was the last of 12 grandskids to wear a pair of Gap flannel-lined jeans this last winter. Its so awesome and brings back so many memories…

  13. Michelle says:

I 100% agree. I have a girl, then boy, so I have hunted through all the boxes to find gender neutral things. I hope to be able to have at least 1 more to really get to experience the hand me downs!

    Beautiful pictures!

I have two girls 7 & 3. I didn’t think I was having more babies after I lost one in between (I’m an older mom – also have a 22 year old son) so I gave away all my older daughter’s clothes and recently a friend gave a bunch back to me, it’s so fun to see my littlest one wear her sisters clothes and knowing that twin girls in between them wore them too!

  15. Suzie says:

I have 2 girls (15/13) and a boy (9). I have passed hand-me downs from 1 child to the other and am thankful for the hand-me-down blessings for both my girls and my boy from my friends. It is fun to see who wore what at what age. Now I am blessing another family with my kids’ hand-me-downs and it’s fun to see the outfits they put together with the clothes I’ve passed down.

  16. Anna G. says:

We have clothes that I passed down through my three boys, my first nephew and now my second! Now that’s a hand-me-down!

  17. Jane says:

I have two boys 3 years and 1 month apart, so given they were both born in winter I have been able to hand down almost all their clothes. A few years ago we went to the Royal Easter Show (an agricultural show here in Sydney) and I took a photo of my boys on a ride, it was a great action shot and my oldest son was wearing a t-shirt with the name Fred on the front (an aussie brand called Fred Bare) then two years later we went back to the show, same ride, took a photo and didn’t realise till we got home that my younger son had been wearing the Fred t-shirt!!! Gotta love hand-me-downs! Must remember to scrap the photos together!

  18. I do this now w/my two little boys. My youngest is 6 months and my oldest 5 years. I love seeing Logan in something that Mikey wore and it makes me remember when/where he wore it. Mikey also loves to know that HE wore this or that as a baby and that it means something to mom :)

Becky, I wanted to thank you for a couple of things and I didn’t know where else to write it. First of all, I wanted to say that we have a connection. Diana, your mother in law, was my visiting teacher in El Dorado Ward for a year after I had my first baby. I love her and I learned so much from her. But, I wanted to thank you. When I was first married, you came and did an enrichment in El Dorado Ward about scrapbooking and journaling. It really made an impact on me and helped me learn new ways to record our new little family’s history and the importance of it. Also, I was so grateful that you put almond butter on your facebook page. My two year old is allergic to peanut butter and I didn’t know about almond butter. We made some and he loves it. I was so glad. I have fun reading your blog. Thanks for your great example. Amber Despain

Im the same, at the moment I have a 5 yr old daughter and a 2 year old granddaughter so I LOVE seeing her wear her aunty’s clothes :0)

    I know…it gives you a sense of de-ja-vu!

  24. Stephanie says:

I have two girls, so we go through a lot of hand-me-downs, although sometimes they end up off-season. My favourite was when I dressed my 2nd DD in the same dress for her 2nd bday that my first DD wore for the same birthday. I even did their hair the same (although one has straight hair, one has curly hair). I photoshopped the pictures side-by-side and plan to scrapbook it.

  25. Sue says:

We would never have survived if my children didn’t have hand-me-downs. It’s a ‘green’ way to live. Your boys are so adorable in that little plaid shirt!

  26. TaraMcK says:

I agree, just yesterday was one of those moments :)

  27. Verona H says:

My brother had 3 boys a year apart and put their 1st birthday pictures in one frame with them each in the same outfit. And I seen 1st birthday pictures of parent and child in the same outfit. My mother made us “new clothes” out of old hand me down from aunts and uncles suits and dresses, when I was growing up. Then feed sacks came along and we really got “NEW” clothes”:)

  28. Doni says:

I did the same thing with my two girls. They are 6 years apart, and are 18 and 12 now. I did a scrapbooking layout with a photo of my oldest wearing a cute sun suit when she was 3, and a photo of my youngest wearing the same outfit at the same age, 6 years later. For journaling, I wrote down two lists, one list of 5 ways of how my girls are similar and the other a list of 5 ways of how they are different. Makes for a cool layout! :)

  29. Jennifer says:

I have 3 kids, two girls and a boy. The girls are 5 years apart and we kept some of my oldest daughters clothes. Not only is it fun for me but my younger daughter thinks its the greatest thing to have something that her big sister wore before. Now if I only had hand-me downs for my son I would love it as much as my wallet would! But that’s how the cookie crumbles. Now I just pass his clothes on to my nephew and get to see them from time to time and it makes me smile.

  30. Lucy Gersekowski says:

Thank goodness digi photos encrypt the dates they were taken! When my 1 week-shy-of-4yo is in hand-me-downs from her big sister (by 5 years,) they look like the same kid! You can’t fight genetics!

  31. Sandy says:

Same here! I have an 8 year old and a 3 year old (boys). Your kids shirt looks just like the Old Navy shirt my boys have! Most of my younger ones clothes are from his older brother. I saved clothing till my oldest turned 4, by that time they become more vocal of what they want to wear and start wanting to pick things out. But I’m glad I saved clothing for almost 4 years! And I still save certain items that have barely been worn, like shoes, or sweaters or jackets.

    Love your blog!!
    Sandy

  32. Kristyn says:

I SO relate to this right now. I just finished bringing out the bag of stored clothes from my 12 year old for my 6 year old. Every time little guy wears one of my favorites from big guy, I just smile.

  33. Kristen says:

After 2 boys and 2 girls, my hubby says we are done. I got joy out of the hand-me-downs, but getting rid of their clothes for good was very painful. Thankfully, one brother just had their first child–a boy, and the other brother had their first child–a girl. My two sister in laws are so kind to dress their little ones in my kids clothes when I see them and it warms my heart to no end.
