yellow.

Today’s spray-painting inspiration features sun yellow which I picked it up at Home Depot. I have no idea where I got this first piece. I’ve had it for years and now I like it all over again. That’s the beauty of spray paint, isn’t it?

I want to point out something important: If you spray-paint something and it looks very … “spray-painted” (read: flat color) it probably calls for a little distressing. This adds depth, dimension, and interest to the piece you’ve painted. You can go really subtle and light so you hardly notice it. You can go crazy and get a very weathered look. Or you can go for something in the middle.

This shows you what the bowl looked like painted before (left) and during (right) the distressing. I just used a little piece of sandpaper. Super easy.

I found this little number at Hobby Lobby. After rolling my kitchen washcloths for a dozen years, I have switched to an old-fashioned stack next to the sink. So I was really pleased to find this shape & size. It just begged for a coat of a happier color.

We’ve had these topiaries for quite some time. Don’t remember where we got them, but they’ve been feeling pretty drab lately. Until now.

This is how I prepped each topiary before painting: Plastic bag and some tape protected the greenery. I wasn’t worried about paint getting on the moss because it needed to have a little fresh layer added on top anyway.

Love all the projects you have been posting! Your house is so beautiful & colorful- I would love to have a “photo tour” sometime & keep the decorating ideas coming (especially ideas for decorating on a budget- I could really use some help with that). Thanks for all of the inspiration!!

Can you tell us what finishing spray you use. Is it a high gloss or satin finish? What brand? There are so many out there! Thanks!

  8. Teresa says:

Is the yellow paint a semi-gloss or satin finish??

Wow Becky! Your house sure seems to be full of color now from the past few years of the pictures you have shared from time to time. My city has a local home tour every year and features a bunch of homes with really nice decor. The homes are opened for an “open house” of sorts and gives folks a chance to see how amazing women like yourself with a great sense of style and design put their homes together. You should do a tour for us one of these days. It really has been fascinating watching your sense of style and so kind of you to share your great ideas to give our homes some new life. You show us that even with, in my situation, 4 kids under the age of 6, that our homes don’t have to be a disaster with a toy tornado in every direction!

Love your tips and please keep sharing!

I mean an “online tour” OOPS forgot to say that….

Becky, will you come to my house, and pick things out to paint and place around all pretty??? It’s a very small house so I’m sure it wouldn’t take you long.

Okay, Becky, I have the same question as Teresa above…what finish did you use on your spray paint: gloss, satin, flat? I love love love your idea for the kitchen wash cloths and went to Hobby Lobby yesterday to buy the same darling container. I want to spray it black and this will be my first time every spray painting anything…augh! I am a little nervous so want to do it right.

I read your handout and know I should prime it first, then spray it the color, distress it by sanding, and finally spray on a top coat. Can I ask what primer I should use and is this in a can like the spray paint is? Also, what kind of clear top coat do you prefer and what finish should that have? I’d love the brands you use and where you bought them, too, so mine can turn out as good as yours. (It looks like you buy them at Home Depot?)

Sorry to bother you with so many questions but I am not crafty at all and am super excited to try this project! I am truly just clueless so hope you see this and respond. I’d really appreciate your comments! Thanks so much!
