my mom, the giver.

I’ve introduced her here on my blog more than once. This is my mom. Hi mom! (She will be surprised to see this post.)

One of my mom’s best traits is that she is a giver in many ways. Last week I posted these thoughts & pictures about taking pictures of words, particularly when traveling. A few of you recognized a name special to you in the picture of Finnish name plates. My ever-so-thoughtful mom took notice of those blog readers and tracked down name plates for them. For real. So now she has these name plates and wants to send them to those readers. For real.

She cracks me up — and yet — it really is so thoughtful. SO, cute blog readers who left a comment about one of these names — you know who you are — please send your shipping address to this email address and my mom will send you your name plate. For real.

Know what might be fun? If any of you have met my mom (she has accompanied me on many trips back when I used to travel & teach on the road) … feel free to leave a comment to say hi to her, and maybe mention where you met her or what impression she had on you. This will make her day. In fact — feel free to say hi, even if you haven’t met her.  : )

(No, it’s not Mom’s birthday. No special occasion. I just love her. That’s all.)

I met your Mom at CK convention in Mesa, 2006. Just 4 days before I gave birth to my youngest. You (Becky) wanted to give me fair warning about C-sections. Your Mom was caring your littlest one at the time. :) I think it is awesome you still recognize your Mom!!! She is pretty awesome.

  7. Jade says:

What an amazing mum : ) You are truly blessed Becky.

  8. Carol S says:

I met your Mom at the Mesa CKC, too. She was standing in the back of the classroom, entertaining little Claire, while you taught the class. She was just so fun to talk to. What a sweet, giving woman. I remember thinking what a lucky girl you were, Becky. You get to teach something you love and you have a fantastic Mom that could come with you and help with the baby. Claire was an absolute doll. She just smiled and slept while we crafted away.

  9. Becki says:

Becky I love reading your blog and I love the positive way you honor your parents. Truly, your mom is a lovely person, and I think it is fabulous that she is sending “happy mail” to these lucky ladies

  10. Ashley S. says:

I met your mom at a CK Convention in Mesa – it was at your simple cards class (I think it was 2006). She seemed so sweet. The biggest compliment I can give to her without really knowing her is that she clearly raised you very well.

    Hi there,
I haven’t met either of you but wish I could. To Becky’s mum – you msound like a wonderful person and to have bought up such a tallented, caring fantastic daughter, you must be a fantastic family. I have a great relationship with my mum and she sounds very similar. I too feel so blessed to have her in my life and would love to be able to honour her in some way. Becky, this is a lovely way.
    All my love from Downunder!!

I’ve met your wonderful mom! In fact, I was blessed by her in many ways in my youth & I’ll always remember her giving spirit–you’re right. The amazing thing is I still have little things from Young Women & Sunday School from here & even now, years later, I actually remember what she was teaching us. Miracle! ;)

  16. JoLynn says:

I have only “met” your mom through this blog, Becky. However, I must say, with the way you have touched so many lives through all that you have done in your career and the things you post here, I feel that we know her through you. She has much to be proud of with you!

  17. Angel says:

Hi Mom!!!! What a thoughtful and wonderful thing to do. Becky is a very lucky daughter.

  18. Jill says:

Hi Mom, You obviously are a special lady to have raised a wonderful daughter like Becky. You are not only both talented (loved the cross stitch “pillows” you made) but you have taught her the importance of giving and WE reap the benefits of that as she shares her gifts with us. I lost my mother nearly 9 years ago and enjoy when Becky mentions you and shares a bit about you too.

Becky…can we meet your dad and brothers too?

  19. Deanna says:

Mrs A…..the epitomy of a Mommy. You’re what I strive to uphold and be each day as I thank my lucky stars for being a stay at home Mommy.

I love you both and miss you too!

    XO. Safe travels back home!

  20. Very Sweet. Two beautiful ladies. I’ve never met your mom, but I first saw her on the cover of one of your layout books. I felt like I’ve known her ever since.:)

  21. Krystal says:

Cute picture of you and your mama! I recognized the green jacket that you’re wearing as the one you added some fun buttons to a few months back! :)

  22. Hope says:

Hi Mrs. Allgaier!!! It’s Hope from Brunswick High!! With Becky’s latest post I thought it would be the perfect time to let you know how much your family had a positive influence on me. Becky was (and still is) such a wonderful and kindhearted soul. That says alot about you and Dr. Allgaier and your home. I always felt welcomed and loved anytime I was over or around either one of you and I thank you for that!! I feel truely blessed to have known all of you and I thank you for giving me a peek into what a positive influence a warm and loving family can have and what a blessing that can be!! I wish you all that best in everything that you do and God bless you and Dr. Allgaier for your mission work! What a gift the world has received in having all of you in it!! Much love always!!

    • So sweet Hope!! You are so kind……give our love and best wishes to your family for us! We miss our home and friends in Brunswick….but we will be back there before you (or we) know it!! :-)

  23. Susie says:

Hello Becky’s Mom! So sweet of you to find and send the nameplates. Becky is a lucky girl to have you as her Mom.

  24. Lydia says:

Hmmm…Let’s see. I met your mom 25 years ago. She was in the kitchen with her apron on, mixing 6 gallons of milk- Andy wanted to be a cow when he grew up. No, I don’t really remember the exact moment, but what a neat mama. A stick-to-it woman, no nonsense, but a lot of fun, happily willing to serve (now being felt half way around the world), delights in her family, a supportive wife, can sing one heck of a wake up song…years of happy memories.

I think of her just about every day when I lead music while driving my mini van :)

    • AAHH the ‘WAKE UP SONG’……and it DOES still exist!!! I still ‘lead’ music when I drive…..the other missionaries think I am crazy!! Fun…..great family….and of the Daniel’s!! Love to all of you…..:-)

  25. Lindsay says:

I didn’t actually meet your mom but I saw her in the DC temple once. It was like a celebrity sighting. I would have said hello but it somehow didn’t seem appropriate in the temple. :)

  26. Chrissy says:

When I read the comments of your original post and saw that your mom offered to buy the names and mail them, I thought that was so sweet! You are very lucky to have such a special, kind-hearted mother but I can tell that you already know that! You mom has certainly passed on her positive spirit and generosity to you. Have a wonderful day!

  27. Sally says:

Aaaaah – so now we know where you get your generous giving instinct, Becky! Hello to your mom! Hope both of you have a great day. Thanks for your kindnesses to others, and sharing the good things in life w/ us – the readers. (I have a great mom too, and know I get some of my best traits from her!)

Hi Sister Allgaier! It’s Erin (White) Hansen here. I like to read Becky’s blog and pretend I know famous people, like her and you. I always thought you were a super cool Stake YW pres. 33. Laurie says:

I met your Mom @ a CK convention in Mesa where she was helping with baby Claire while you taught. I remember saying to her how wonderful it was that you could be there & not have to worry about your wee one. Your Mom told me, ” Oh Becky would never leave her babies!”
I knew she was not only proud of you for your presence in the scrapbooking world but even more so as a Mom! You have such a wonderful role model Becky & this reminds me how much I treasure all that my Mom taught me. She was a giver & I miss her each & every day.
Finland is blessed to have you Mrs. Allgaier!

  34. Melanie F says:

    Hi Sis. A–
Since they redid the wards we haven’t run into each other at church much like we used to when I came back home for a visit! I did get to go swimming with Elyn (sp?) and her kids last year when I brought my boys home with me, though. The kids had a great time. Take care! –Melanie Vandre Fulton

  41. Gloria says:

Hello to both of you, it is great to see that you love and enjoy your mom as much as you can Becky. Our parents are the ones who mold our foundation and morals, and giving is such an amazing trait which makes us unselfish and caring. Unfortunately I just lost my mom over 2 weeks ago and both her and my dad (passed 5 yrs ago) were the ones to mold me. It is up to us to find and copy the best traits in the people we come across.
Hope you enjoy many many more years together!!

I met your mom at the Indianapolis CKU in 2003. Porter was just a baby and was modeling a CK onesie. I bought two of them as I was expecting two grandchildren at the time. I didn’t know who she was until she smiled and I recognized the Allgaier teeth!!

Have a great time on your travels!!

  51. Diane Marion says:

    Hi Vicki.

It’s fun reading about your mission in Finland. I’m sure you’ve heard about Virgie’s passing away. So sad. She lived a long and wonderful life. I was able to meet her 10 years ago when I was able to meet your Mother, right before she passed away. I was so grateful to have met them both.

I know I’ve met you before, but I don’t remember where and when. I do know Kevin and Lauren and Jonathan and Tina from living in UT. Sad to say, I don’t think I’ve ever met Becky. A friend had Becky’s blog on her blog, so I’ve been enjoying reading about your family.

Enjoy your day! Diane Marion (Mark’s wife)

    • Hi Diane…..Yes, it is very sad having Virgie pass away today! I wish I could be there with the family at this time. I would love to see my cousins and aunts and uncles! Our oldest son, Jonathan, and his wife, Tina, and 3 of their children will be attending the funeral and representing us. There is quite a family reunion going on right now with all of those family members who have passed away! I can only imagine everyone sitting around a pump organ and singing just like they have done so many times!! How wonderful to think of that lovely reunion!!

Thanks for staying in touch! The best to you and Mark and your family! Give our love to all!!

  52. Beth says:

Hi Becky’s Mom! So neat to see where you are living while on Mission. So sorry that I have never had the pleasure of meeting either of you, but follow you and your work constantly. I live in Maryland on the Eastern Shore and Mom you are not missing much this summer. It has been horribly hot, muggy and too many days of 100. Enjoy your climate!! What a great photo of the two of you.
    Sending hugs!

  56. Melissa Root says:

    Hi Sister Allgaier

My parents worked with you at the DC temple … the Neibars. My mom thinks of you often. She misses working with you and your husband.

I saw you several times in the temple, but never introduced myself. I didn’t know if it was appropriate to talk scrapbooking in the temple! :)

The best to you and your husband in Finland.

    Melissa

    Hello, Mrs. Allgaier!

I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting you (though I hope to one day) but met Becky just briefly in Pomona, CA for a scrapbook expo 12 years ago. There she signed my copy of her first book, The Art of Creative Lettering, which I will treasure always!

How sweet and incredibly thoughtful you are! I, too, had a big smile on my face even though that wasn’t my name on those plates… :) If I could, I would send you flowers on Becky’s birthday just to show you my appreciation for having her. She, too, is a beautiful person! She inspires me everyday to appreciate my many blessings–big and small!

I am a 39 year old working mom who is happily married for 12 years. We have 2 boys: Peter, 7 and Adam, 5. We live in Southern CA.

    Thank you for Becky!

    Arlene

  68. Sabrina S says:

My sister just named her daughter Heidi, it is such a cute name. I just wanted to say that I have been a big Becky Higgins fan since I got into scrapbooking in high school about 1999…
After I got married we moved to PA for my husband’s schooling..and one day we stopped in at the Washington DC Temple…and there was a display about quilting, and I remember seeing some of your mom’s work. I was making a big deal about the fact that I knew who that was- and my husband thought it was kind of funny. She definitely is super talented, and she seems like an all around amazing person!

  69. Hey becky’s mom, that was so nice of you to get their name plates!

  70. Candice says:

I met your mom at a CKU. It might even have been the first CKU in Provo. But I recognized her from pictures in CK and said Hi to her. She was so nice and sweet and we had a nice conversation! Hi mom! ;) This is so sweet of you! My daughter (Sara) saw me reading this post and she’s always having to tell everyone she’s Sara without the H. She saw the SAARA and mentioned she’d never seen Sara spelled that way. I had to explain to her it was from another country and she mentioned how she was different because her name had no h; it was so cute!

  75. Mary in IL says:

    Hello Mrs. Allgaier,
My sister and I met you and your husband, Becky and David, and Porter and Claire on a scrapbooking cruise in 2006. We were the two white haired gals who people thought were twins but are actually just 2 years apart in age. We absolutely loved meeting your whole family and have been Becky fans since she came into the scrapbooking world! You have raised a beautiful daughter (inside and out) but i don’t need to tell you that! :-)
Mary from IL and her sister Jerri from MI

  76. Jill in Chicago says:

Hi! We met when Becky’s oldest was a tiny newborn. I was so amazed that you chose to come on this trip with her. Sadly, my mom would have felt it was a tremendous burden to be “stuck” as the babysitter.

It was a joy to meet you, and I continue to enjoy when Becky shares about her family.

God’s blessings to you on your mission trip!

  77. Mary Ann says:

I’ve never met you in person, but I’ve been following along on your mission blog since you left the states. I love the beautiful photos you post (especially the ones of the Temple and the places you visit…so pretty!!) I also was so touched when I left a comment on your blog a few months back, and you wrote me back just to say hello.
I’m enjoying seeing Finland through your eyes!
    Thanks!!!

  78. Maryann says:

  79. Meaghan says:

I met your mom at CKU-Detroit in your “Sketches” class, and I said to her, “You must be SO proud of Becky!” And, of course she said, “Yes”, with tears in her eyes. I thought to myself, “I bet she hears that all of the time; wow……………..she must shed a lot of tears!!!!!!!!!!”

You were both very cute together!!!!!!!!!!! = )

  82. Elaine Swensen says:

Hello Sister Allgaier, How wonderful to be serving in Finland. I’ll bet it is a wonderful adventure. I have been following Becky’s blog for some time and love hearing about you and your relationship with each other. I have two daughters and share many endearing memories with them.
We are Northern Utah natives and used to bread AKC Shelties. We kept the pick of the last litter and named her Henna [actually for her sable red hair color] I noticed the name on your plate photo and it made me smile SOOOOO big. I had no idea it was a name and everyone always thinks her name is Hanna. I’d love to clarify it to many friends. How much would it cost for me to get you to mail me one of those cute plates? It would be so fun, since she is the “neighborhood” pet.
Have a wonderful service adventure there in Finland.
    Yours in the gospel, Elaine

  83. How fun to hear from you Rebekah!!! OH the good old days!! Weren’t they wonderful…..and even better as years go by!! I hope you are doing well and enjoying life as much as we are!! :-) Thanks for being on Becky’s blog!!

I am so glad to have this opportunity to say hello to Vicki as our family has ALOT to thank you for! Our little girl, Erin was born in a Maryland hospital and we were chosen to be her adoptive parents and it was the Allgaiers who opened their home for us while we visited her and waited for paperwork. Becky, your mom and dad are HUGE heroes of ours and every time I see them in your work it makes me smile and brings back great memories! We will never be able to pay back their generosity but we hope the Allgaiers are always blessed in all that they do!
This year Erin will be going into YWs and is a bright and beautiful girl and she along with her 8 year old brother are the best things in our life! Thanks again for helping us when our little family was just beginning!!!!

    Hello Mrs. Allgaier,
I have had the pleasure of meeting & taking classes from your beautiful & uber talented daughter on two different occasions July 05 CKU Orlando ( she was pregnant with Porter if I remember correctly, what a trooper, dont know how she did it) and then I had the pleasure of taking her “All about Me” class in April 07 CKU Dearborn. I also met you that same year and I remember you were so sweet& patient ,helping Becky in her make & take booth. I was allowed to take a photo of the two of you and really admire the close relationship between the two of you.
