Like so many do in the summer time, we enjoyed a little family road trip over the weekend. We headed north a couple of hours to beautiful Flagstaff, Arizona. It was about 30 degrees cooler than our home base in the Valley of the Sun and we had a really wonderful visit with some dear friends that we’ve known a long time.
From my seat in our car, this was my view.
David driving. Kiddos in their bathing suits from being at the lake, wet towels drying over the back seat, a mess of toys and things that Claire insisted on bringing …
This was my view. And so I took a picture.
Think about road trips you’ve been on. Have you aimed your camera out the window to take some scenic shots? Have you photographed signs and landmarks? What about inside the car? What snacks do you enjoy on the road? What activities are the kids doing? Who is driving? What view do those in the backseat have of the driver? Are you using a map? GPS? Turn your camera inside on your road trip too.

See…I took a picture of myself in the side mirror and the traffic behind us and my hubby thinks I’m weird…thanks for showing me that I’m not the only one
Oh, and I always take a picture of him driving too…which of course drives the hubby crazy…HAHA!
Awesome ideas! We’re getting ready to go on a roadtrip. I figured out yesterday that over the two weeks we’ll be gone, we’ll be in the car for a total of approx. 70 hours. And that’s with 4 boys, 5 years old and younger! AGH!
F u n ideas can do!
I did the mirror photo over my hubby’s shoulder while riding on the back of his Harley, just another twist.
How do you have perfect timing?? We’re leaving on a road trip in three days, and I’m so excited to document it. Thanks for the tips!
Oh and I almost forgot this challenging photo opportunity, shooting the passing yellow line while riding on the Harley too!
Im so going to use some of this tips! We are taking the kids to Lego Land tomorrow and then possibly Berlin! Thanks!
Usually no one rides in the back of my car bc its just me ..sometimes i have a passenger in the seat next to me but when i road trip by myself i am pretty good at pointing and shooting out my front or side window to get scenic shots
Great ideas, Becky! I love those shots! Gotta love AZ road trips to Prescott & Flagstaff in the summer!
Oh so true!!! Love those ideas, Becky. I have to tell you: my in-laws are from Minnesota, and after 25 years of marriage, I have seen way too many videos of the countryside they sped past on their way from Seattle back “home”. While I treasure those videos, I’d give my right arm (welll….not really….) to see the car, the snacks, the books, what my husband and his sisters were doing on the way….
I hereby pledge to do that for my kids. Or my grandkids. Or my daughter-in-law or son-in-law to treasure someday!
I just did that in this (third picture) layout. It started as a picture of the frappaccinos that DH and I are addicted to, and ended up about the iPod player, the GPS, DH’s Air Force shirt (ABUs), and the button for the seat warmer that I love so much.

We were just in AZ on vacation last week, and when I saw those beautiful mountains in Flagstaff on I-17 I took a picture. Absolutely gorgeous…we are from Ohio, and it was our first time in AZ. We loved it, especially Sedona.
Love this idea- we did this when we traveled to Arizona a few summers back. I recognize the inside of your car as the same as mine. Don’t you just love your Odyssey? As minivans go, it’s my fave
