word up.

Yes, I am fully aware of my nerdy side. Titling blog posts isn’t my greatest strength.

Here’s another travel photography tip: Capture the WORDS where you go. This is another often-overlooked element of your experience visiting another place. Look at the signs. Notice names, titles, headlines, slang, lyrics or anything else in written form.

Taking pictures of these types of visuals will further capture your traveling experience. This applies whether you’re enjoying a staycation or traveling somewhere where the language is different than your own.

A handful of pictures from Finland … since that’s what’s fresh in our iPhoto library.

Remember looking for ANYthing with your name on it when you were a kid? So fun. Hey, if anyone needs a unique baby name idea …

    Hey Becky,
I have been cleaning out my house getting ready for a remodel and I came across a School Years KOTM. Just listed it a ebay. Maybe someone is interested? I know it is very hard to find.

  2. I did just that on a recent roadtrip from California -Idaho-Montana-Washington. This picture was taken in Deer Lodge, Montana.

I love that you take pictures of things like this! Makes my picture taking seem less strange!

My daughter was so excited to actually see something with her name on it ! It’s Saara, named after her Finnish grandmother. :)

    • You might need one of those name ‘plates’ from Finland?? Let me know…..

      • and since I am Becky’s mother and living here in Finland for a few more months, we would be happy to get one for you! Let us know….. :-)

My daughter’s name is Hanna and she can never find anything with her name on it. Would love one and will be happy to pay for it. Thanks so much! You guys are so cute as Mom and daughter. I lost my mom 4 years ago and we were very close as well. It’s fun to see what seems like a similar relationship in the two of you!

    Becky,
Just started reading your blog; I’m sure you have posted this info before, but what camera and lenses do you use?

  6. Those words are…so…long…

When I went to London a few years ago, I scrapbooked a list of words differences between us and them. Trash/Litter, Bathroom/Loo, things like that. The list was LONG!

Becky, just wanted to say THANK YOU again for hosting the great Photography giveaway! Today was our family’s photo shoot with Logan at Sprout Photography in SLC, Utah. She couldn’t have been nicer and more open. I was a little worried she’d have 2nd thoughts about her generous gift when I came in with my three boys all under the age of 9. But she put everyone at ease and took so much time with us.

We live in Moab, UT (except for this summer we’re in Park City!) so normally getting any kind of professional photo means a two-hour road trip to Grand Junction, CO and some very tired and cranky boys. I haven’t even seen the proofs yet, but I’m so grateful we did this, that we won this, and that you gave your time and energy and blog to making it happen.

    Thanks!

Oh Becky…I loved this. My daughter’s boyfriend is Finnish and I was hoping to find his name in the plaques. It would have been a fun gift if it was available.

    Thanks for the inspiration.

    • If you can tell me what your daughter’s boyfriends name is I can look for a name plaque here in Finland!! Just a thought (I am Becky’s mom. My husband and I will be here only a few more months!) :-) KIITOS…have a great day!

Great idea. i really need to make a list of ‘ideas’ and keep it with me with a picture to jar my memory of what I’m talking about. If I keep re-familiarizing myself with these ideas maybe they’ll sink in. Love you work. And… project life is still sitting in its box on the floor next to my scrap table…

My name is NEVER found on those racks — looks like in Finland my name is more popular! Now I know where to go to find name related paraphernalia!

    Thanks Becky!!

Hey, I see my name!! I almost never find Heidi. I should have grown up in Europe I guess. LOL

I notice that you now put your website logo on all of your photography that is added to your blog. Do you not care to share your photos with your blog readers anymore? Is this for protection or for advertising? It appears that your blog is now your business and not a personal venture to share with your readers. I am disappointed.

How funny! We were in Finland in June (just for one week…in Tampere). Hubby was at work while I got to know the town. Wish I’d taken more photos but I felt a little foolish getting out my camera and taking photos of everything. I really, really want to learn how to take better photos with my camera! (also wish we’d had a chance to see a real outdoor sauna maybe on my next visit).

LOL at finding names in things! I could never ever find my own name on any items for sale in the good old USA (but I could in Austria and Europe- what a treat!).

I’m now in LOVE with Marimekko …how about you?

  19. Your blog is one I have been coming back to for years! I was especially tickled today to read your photography tips for travelers. Thank you!

I’m glad I’m not the only one taking photos of road signs etc. My husband thinks it’s weird but I think it tells a great story. I really loved the photo of the names. So cool.
