a conference for creatives

Today I’m announcing the winner of the Whippy Cake adorableness … and … doing another giveaway!

Because it’s fun.

So first … congratulations to Leslie Alexander in Monticello, IL! Shoot an email to wendy@whippycake.com and she’ll hook you up. You will love adorning your head with some Whippy Cake.

………………..

Last month I did a post (“Creative Ambition”) about those who have creative ideas and entrepreneurial spirits. One person I mentioned is SheyB, the camera strap girl. She recently came up with the idea of bringing creative entrepreneurs to one place for a big conference. This idea is becoming a reality now and registration for Creative Estates is open. If you’re interested in reading a little about Shey’s inspiration, check out this blog post she wrote – “A Conference Dream Becomes a Reality”.

What is Creative Estates?

Anyone with a creative mind would enjoy this conference. Scrapbookers, photographers, sewers, knitters/crocheters, painters, general crafters, blog designers, jewelry artists, writers … anyone with a creative side that loves to do something with it. Those who are in the business of selling stuff they make or offering services to others. Or those who are thinking about embarking on a journey such as that. It will be like one big block party with crafters of every kind. Held in April 2011 in beautiful Arizona — lucky for me, that’s my own backyard.

There will be speakers and classes and workshops and yes — a Handmade Market, which will feature many amazing handmade shops. I am sooo looking forward to that.

I will be there. I have accepted the invitation to speak at Creative Estates and look forward to meeting some of you there.

Which brings me to my next point: YOU.

You may be feeling that you need to be at Creative Estates. Many of my readers fit in this category and so I imagine many of you would love the opportunity to come & learn & be inspired & gain insight from other creatives. Be sure to visit the official Creative Estates blog for all the conference scoop.

Shey is giving away a ticket to Creative Estates to one of my readers! The ticket includes admission to the conference, 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, a dinner/party, and Creative Workshops. Leave a comment with your name … and … mention your business or craft or area of interest. Link to your site or blog (if you want) if you have one for your business. Not because it has anything to do with being chosen (that will be totally random), but because I’d like to get to know you a little better. I’d love to know what you’re up to. Or what you’d like to be up to.  ; )

What am I not into? Photography, scrapbooking, cards, knitting, sewing, quilting… oh my!! I have the creative bug. I would love to join the event.

  5. Katie W says:

OMG! What a great opportunity. I am an SU demo who has been mostly hobby but would like to make more of an effort in my business. I also make handcrafted items on the side and have been thinking about opening my own Etsy shop. This sounds like the perfect way to boost my confidence and get me moving in the right direction. Thank you so much for the opportunity. I was just praying for guidence this morning so maybe this is an answer to a prayer!

  6. Amy says:

I’m already registered, but thought I’d enter to win another entry so maybe one of my crafty friends can come. I am a jewelry designer and recent sewer. My website is http://www.amycornwell.com and you can see my crafts at amycornwell.blogspot.com. I look forward to seeing you there!

I don’t have a business currently, but have wanted to start one again to fulfill my creative soul! I had a gift basket business briefly, and would love to start a scrapbooking-related business in the near future. Would LOVE to attend this conference to get ideas and learn from other creative people…and I’m in AZ so it would be super convenient to be there! Thanks for the opportunity to win a chance to attend :) .

  8. NAOMI Armenta says:

This is an amazing opportunity to meet others like those out there who have talent but are not always able to make it to the “big” shows out there! I would love to come and meet everyone, espeically you Becky! Have been a fan for a long time – since CK! I love card making and scrapbooking!

  9. Krista says:

I think this would be a great way to help understand the homemade market. I am a scrapbooker at heart and although I don’t want to sell them, I make 8×8 scrapbooks for other parents that have lost a little one (specifically newborn loss). As a mother to an angel I know how important it is to have a memory book for them. Krista

  10. Kim Sly says:

So exciting! I would love to attend this conference. I just started my own online design shop, http://www.albiedesign.com, a line of children’s graphic clothing & art prints for every age. I launched only a few months ago, and the response has been beyond my dreams! I have to say though, if it weren’t for the help of friends & total strangers (that happen to like my work) I would not have gained this momentum. That’s why this conference is genius!! I can only imagine the ideas and inspiration that would come from this kind of creative collaboration!

    Best,
    Kim Sly

  11. Kelley Sweitzer says:

I have an idea for a party planning/supply business but have no idea how to get it started nor do I have any money to invest in getting it started right now. I would love this opportunity to help me get my business started. Thanks!!

  12. Lain Ehmann says:

The conference sounds awesome! I actually contacted her about speaking on the idea of creating community online, but they were full-up. Maybe next year!

  13. Mandie Wade says:

I have no idea if the comment I thought I posted actually went through… I noticed my typo tho, LOL! Sometimes this spell check is NOT such a good thing! I am a scrapbooker that has recently been getting interested in the Home Decor side of paper crafting and would like to sell some of my creations but am not sure how to start! Thanks for this opportunity to win, Becky!

BTW, I am hosting a HUGE blog candy giveaway on my blog… I hope you’ll check it out!

  14. Jessica Hess says:

Wow! It’s like you are speaking to me. Thanks so much.

I love paper crafts of every kind, and have made custom scrapbooks, and all kinds of invitations for others. (Mostly friends and family.) I make barrettes for kids, I love photography (although I know I have a lot of room for improvement) and I love teaching and sharing.

I sold Stampin Up for 2 years, worked at Archiver’s for 3 years, briefly had an Etsy shop, and am creative almost every day in some kind of way. I would love to learn more about how to sell myself and my creations, take better photos and make better business decisions. I will defenitely be going to the website for this conference to find out about it. I would love to find a way to work from home and have it be successful. My family is my priority, but using my hands, brain and posative attitude to make some money would be such a blessing.

Thanks for your inspiration and great example Becky. It’s amazing what moms/women can accomplish when we share, inspire, and support each other.

  18. I feel like I have so many ideas about what I would like to do that I can’t narrow it down. A cupcake business, writing a series of children’s books that focus on the letters of the alphabet and how they work together (something that makes learning to read more understandable), blog background creations, a photography business (?), or wedding invitation design. I work full time as a teacher right now, but eventually at some point when we have a family I’d like to be able to stay home and supplement our income with something. Attending the conference might be helpful in organizing my thoughts on such a venture.

  19. Melissa says:

Wow!! This is an amazing opportunity. I’m like DanelleB above, I’ve tried my creative hand at just about everything–quilting, crocheting, cake decorating, etc. But my passion is photography, with scrapbooking running a close second.

  20. Shannon Orr says:

Oh this would be fantastic! I’m trying to get one of these going on the east coast! And it would be awesome to be with with all those lovely creative ladies. I’m also from AZ and would love a break from Boston winters. Yes we still have winter in April here. I am an architectural designer with a photography craft side too.

  21. Ashley Cannon says:

This sounds like such an amazing opportunity. I would love to get to be a part of it! I’m really trying to break into the world of making a profit from creating personal scrapbooks for people who have all the pictures but just don’t have the time to do it. Any learning experience I could get would be amazing.

    Ashley from Florence, KY.

  22. Ellie says:

Sounds very cool. My website is http://www.elliebphotos.com. I love creating with photographs, design anything! :)

  23. Karen P says:

Wow–this sounds amazing and I’d love to attend! My business is “Memories by Design”, and custom scrapbooks and papercrafts are our product. My friend and I started this business as an outlet for our creative side and to earn a little extra income. We are having fun with it and would love the opportunity to learn more from Creative Estates. Thanks!

  24. Tricia says:

I loooove anything that has to do with babies, clothes, and pure cuteness. Who doesn’t want their kid to look fabulous? Especially when you know it is one of a kind. Thats what I do. I make clothing.
along with that I love to draw. Portraits are my specialty and I can capture an emotion with the drawing that sometimes the camera misses. There is just something to be said about a hand drawn portrait. Thanks Becky for this opportunity!!

I would LOVE to attend. My family says that I am a creative factory and that I’m into everything…photography, scrapbooking, crafting, sewing, home decor, beading, you name it. I have been scrapbooking for others for about 7 years and I would like to balance and focus my life a little more. I don’t really have a website, but you can see my 365 blog.

  28. TaLaisa says:

I’ve been reading about Creative Estates. It sounds like so much fun! I love to create new things. I currently have a jewelry design business http://www.etsy.com/shop/TaLaisa I Love it! I have 3 boys this kind of keeps me feeling girlie. I also scrapbook, quilt, sew clothing and I have a degree in culinary arts and have been a private chef and made and sold hundreds of pounds of my fudge at holiday time.

I would love to network with like minded ladies.

  29. Sarah Bisel says:

I just had my first quilting book published, and I know there is more I could do to pull all my ideas together. I need inspiration and guidance to show me the way to accomplish the business goals as well as find a balance for my family.

Side note to Becky….I have been so impressed by your ability to share the gospel, promote your great products, inspire greatness in others, and still put your family first. I feel like I am doing half jobs in those categories, and I would love to learn from your experience. Thanks for being a great example of “how to do it” right.

  30. Kerrin says:

I am on a journey of creative proportion and love this idea!! Brilliant! I have opened a scrap booking/ card making studio and I am always looking for ideas and inspiration. I am also writing a book about the honest side of being a mother and wife, which you can read about on my blog. kerrinscropshop.blogspot.com. Thanks for doing this Becky, I am really enjoying checking out the blogs done by your other fans and followers.

  31. Terrie says:

Working on starting a craft business, not ready to reveal yet, but would love to learn more about the “sharing” part. Papercrafting is my passion and I would love to turn it into something profitable. Live in Phoenix too, so that would be a bonus!

  32. Lora says:

I am a SAHM who would love to turn my hobbies of scrapbooking, cardmaking, photography, writing into more of a profession to help pay the bills and stuff. I don’t have a website yet, but am eager to learn as much as I can! What a wonderful conference idea!

  33. Katy Martin says:

This sounds like so much fun! I just started my own business in February selling baby blankets, burpies, and “stuff”. I recently branched out into designing invitations, thank you cards, and the like. I LOVE to craft!! With two little kids at home and a husband who works long hours, I sometimes find it hard to “get away”. Crafting is my escape! Even if what I try and make doesn’t turn out the way I wanted it to, I still have fun doing it!

This conference sounds like a great way to get away and be creative. Thanks for all of your fun ideas, your example, and for sharing your life! It’s good to know that there are great wholesome people in the world who are able to juggle church, family, and work. I am finding it difficult to do that sometimes… but I have to remind myself that my business will go on… but my family needs me!

  34. Michelle says:

I would love to attend this conference! I own an online stationery shop, http://www.imag-designs.com. I am in love with all things paper! Photography also is high on my creative outlet list! I’m out on the east coast and I don’t attend many conferences but this would be such an amazing opportunity!

  35. Megan says:

For years I have been trying to earn money by doing the creative things I love. When I was managing and teaching at scrapbook stores, I scrapbooked for other people for a few years. My pictures still sit in boxes unscrapped…but heart surgery in college makes paying the bills more important than scrapping your own photos! Last year, in trying to earn money for building our family through adoption, I officially opened http://rubyjaneboutique.com after participating in my first boutique — Boutique in the Barn in Tempe, AZ (which happens to be coming up again October 23rd!) I love being able to use my hands and come up with new ideas while I stay home with my kiddos. Creative Estates sounds amazing. Would be honored to attend. Thanks for the opportunity!

  36. JoLynn says:

Oooh…I would love to win this! I make and sell custom chore charts for kids & their family. I just started a few months ago and would love to learn more about having a “home based business”. How exciting! Plus, I would love to meet you! :) Thanks for the opportunity!

You can see the chore charts at http://www.etsy.com/shop/IdahoMomof2 or on my blog at http://www.livingthelifeofareiley.blogspot.com.

  38. Tara Mundt says:

Thanks SO much Becky for fueling the creativity inside of us. I’ve read about “Creative Estates” and think it is an AMAZING concept and will be an even more amazing event.
While I’ve always had that ‘longing’ to be doing something, I’m not sure what that ‘something’ is…yet. I love the scrapbooking/sewing/crafting world but haven’t exactly found my passion. I’m currently in an entrepreneurial class but find myself wandering in way too many different directions. Thanks again for the inspiration and encouragement.

  40. Hey Becky,
Creative Escapes sounds sooo amazing and fun too. For years I have longed for a ‘creative friend’, someone who loves to craft as much as I do. Well 5 months ago my 4 year old daughter was drawn to a little girl at school and they became fast friend….fast forward to now…her mother and I love to craft while our kids are in school. Very productive very rewarding. I would LOVE to have the opportunity to experiance Creative Escapes with my new friend. I am fully remodeling my house so we have very little room for extra stuff.
Oh not only do our 6 kids (between us) play well together but our husbands are BFF’s too. It warms my heart when I have friends and our husbands get along so well. OK I’ll stop I could go on forever. My Blog is http://www.nikkiwitkin.blogspot.com
Thanks for the opportunity….have a happy sunshine day:)

  41. Tina says:

What a wonderful idea and opportunity! I don’t have a blog or business….yet. I love interior design, photography, scrapbooking, card-making, cooking, organizing but haven’t made the time yet to brainstorm how I could turn one of these passions into a business. I think this conference would be just the ticket for me!

Life is funny that way, huh? :)

  45. Kelly says:

Woww..this looks really, really interesting and I will be in town for my husband’s work conference at the same time. Hmmmmm.. Photography and scrapping are my passions and did a some custom invitations business for a bit. Must look into further! Thanks for the opportunity to win a ticket!

  56. Stacey C says:

It is so funny to hear about this because I just made a comment on kevinandamanda.com to Amanda about how she finds out about all these neat networking and blogging events. I just wondered how people get into a network with all these creative people other than just admiring their blogs.

A few years back before kids I had a custom invitation business called Papermaid, but it only spread through word of mouth. It still do them for friends and family now. Would really love to know how to get my stuff out there again. I just would love to be involved in the creative industry even it it was doing the business side which is my current career.

  59. Anna Seip says:

I like to go to Goodwill and buy wool sweaters. I then take those sweaters home and wash them, which fuses the fibers together (a process called “felting”). I cut the sweaters into the shape of mittens, sew them and line them with new fleece. They’re the warmest mittens ever. I like the idea of taking something that’s discarded and finding the beauty in it, packaging it in a way that makes people smile. It’s sort of an ugly ducking/swan kind of thing.

(Actually, my cat helps me. She’s the “face” of our Etsy shop. So, really, I’m speaking on her behalf.)

    Hi Becky;

This sounds AMAZING. Oh my, I would be head over heels if I won this conference admission! Thanks to you and SheyB for the opportunity!

I’m a scrapbooker, photographer (serious hobbyist, not a professional), card maker, and blogger. I have a personal blog (it’s privacy-protected), and I also administer a blog for my daughter’s large dance school. I just finished hosting my 3rd Annual Photo Contest on my personal blog (for my family and friends), with judging by a professional photography instructor.

I’m a longtime “fan” of your work and your blog, and also met you at CKU-Vancouver many years ago :) I’m in Vancouver BC but I’d do whatever necessary to make it happen (ie… getting to Arizone) if I won ! Thank you Becky for all you do in sharing your many gifts and talents.

  85. Lissa says:

I would love to go to the conference. I’ve been struggling with “what do I want to do when I grow up” and I’m already 43 years old. I believe that the conference would be exactly what I need to give me ideas and inspiration. I’m so tired of the corporate world and really need a creative outlet but don’t know what it is.

    Thanks so much!!!

I would love to attend something like this. I am into a lot of things. Scrapboooking, mixed media, clay, pottery, glass…you get the point. We need more things like this in my area.

  87. Sammie says:

I’m an amateur photographer, but would love to take it to the next level and start earning money doing it. However, I have young children, so it will have to wait a few years! In the meanwhile, I’m enjoying learning as much as I can about photography and starting a small photography business. I’d love to attend this conference!

  88. Keshet Shenkar says:

I would LOVE to be part of this! I scrap and love photography and handmade arts, as well:)

  89. Bhea says:

Wow, thanks for the chance to win! I scrapbook, sew and recently tried my hand at making glass magnets and pendants to sell at my son’s school’s Fall Festival this weekend. Creating and listening to music at night after the kids are off to bed is my own version of therapy. Such a healthy way to unwind. I don’t have a website yet, but may try to setup shop on Etsy soon.

  90. I have been entering these conference giveaways wherever I see them because I am dying to go (and $$s a little tight.) I craft all over the place but mostly do sewing. I make and sell baby items and puff quilts at http://www.honeybearlane.bigcartel.com.

  91. Chalese says:

I so need this!! I have sort of started my own photography business but need some help in the marketing area so I can expand and be more busy.

  95. Jill Jones says:

    What a great event!

I am a graphic designer who is always dabbling in something – quilting, crochet, papercrafting, photography – even wedding cakes. I am toying with the idea of creating some sort of graphic wall art/posters. An event such as this would be the perfect thing to help me gain the focus, motivation and inspiration I desperately need. Thank you!

  96. What a WONDERFUL IDEA!!! A conference for creatives!!!
I just recently opened up a little handmade card shop on Etsy. Although I haven’t had a sale yet, I’m excited about my new shop and all the creative energy I’ve been feeling and all the happiness just HAVING this is bringing to my life. I’m inspired every day by other Etsians, various blogs I read (including yours!!) and the love and encouragement from my family and friends.

Thank you for sharing the information on this convention and your blog in general. Your lovely spirit really shines through. :)

  97. Linda Smith says:

I love to scrapbook and make cards. I am currently trying to get a business off the ground where I design albums for people. I have been a designer for 2 scrapbook stores and in one of the stores I designed albums for many people. But since we moved I have been trying to do this one my own.
This conference sounds like something that would be very beneficial.
Thanks for offering this great gift.

The area of the crafting world that excites me most is finding crafty ways of using ‘leftovers’ and previously loved materials. I call it ‘Reviving Remnants’ because I, myself, feel discarded or not needed sometimes. I have to seek to be made into something new, just like the fun things I make.
Thanks for offering this awesome giveaway! I’ve been pining over the CE conference for weeks!

  106. Shannon says:

Scrapbooker. But you’ve got me into home decorating/crafty stuff. :)

    This would be absolutely amazing!

  107. Courtney says:

I have been crafty since childhood. I discovered scrapbooking in highschool and really fell in love with it the summer after my 2nd year of university. That was 9 years ago. Since then my love of paper and embellishment and my caring and concern for others has morphed into a small business, Created By Courtney. The primary products that I produce are greeting cards, but I also make tile coasters, book marks, notepads/books and framed quotes. This conference would be a great place for networking and an amazing opportunity.

  108. Barby says:

I love all things craft. I am a high school teacher, so I don’t always have the time for it. But since having my second child 7 weeks ago I am craving the creative outlet. I have done more crafting in the last month than the previous two years. Being able to go would be AMAZING!

  110. Carol White says:

I would love to go to develop my creativity. I love album making and many other crafts. I am on disability right now and would love to be able to discover that “something” inside me that might generate income for our family. Having the knowledge to turn that product into a business would be such a blessing!

  111. Dru B. says:

My daughter was telling me about this event and I would love to go but if I were to win this I would give it to her because she was so excited about it. She loves to blog about her family and crafting.

I simply love to create. I especially enjoy paper crafting and home decor.

  112. Amanda says:

  113. Hi there!
I just found your blog and am super excited as I have been doing a 365 project this year and your Project Life is what I NEED! Then, coincidentally I am going to be in AZ in April this spring visiting family and I would LOVE to attend a conference filled with others who are developing or expanding their creativity!

I am hoping (kinda) to start taking professional photography work, but more important than that I am hoping to develop my writing and journaling and just overall creative life:) I want to record our family memories at the same time as developing me:)

  114. Liana says:

I teach classes several times a month (mainly greeting cards) but I would love to be the student this time! I live in the Phoenix area so it would definitely be possible!

Would love to win the tix to the conference! I would swing for the extra $50 to purchase a booth!
