organizing. memory lane. and a giveaway.

Should I just warn you right now? I should. This blog post contains a lot of pictures. And maybe — just maybe – a little nostalgia for some of you.

This is the sight of organization in progress:

I recently had the sudden urge to go through every cabinet, every drawer, every shelf in our home office. And since the drive and the energy and the motivation were all very much alive, I went with it. I didn’t resist.

In this process, I came across a lot of stuff. Stuff as in … a lot of stuff I have been hanging on to for years. I take on a big project like this at least annually and it was definitely that time again. I did a serious assessment. Even more “serious” than in past years because of the personal evolution I’ve experienced these past couple of years.

In going through my stuff, I asked myself a few simple questions:

- Why am I hanging on to this?

- Do I ever use this?

- Do I really value this?

No? Then buh-bye. Clear out the clutter. Let someone else enjoy it. If yes, then fine. Keep it. Note to self: Remember I have this stuff and make more effort to use it more often. Otherwise there is no point for it to take up valuable storage space.

Want to know what supplies in my stash I couldn’t let go of? Well, plenty of things actually. You know — patterned paper, cardstock, basics like that. But also — flowers & brads. Even though my decorative/creative scrapbooking days are far & few between these days, I just can’t seem to let those go.

And letter stickers. Gave a ton of letter stickers away to friends … among many other products. I love that you can see Claire & her little friend reaching in to choose some for themselves here. But I still hung on to a healthy amount of favorites. To me, letter stickers are a staple for creative projects.

So you know what I did throw away … and I even surprised myself? Old Christmas cards! No – not our family’s extra copies. That’s our family history. But after 15 years of hoarding Christmas cards from loved ones, and realizing we truly never go back and dig them out, and reminding myself that I’m not responsible to be the keeper of other families’ histories … well … in the name of SIMPLIFYING … I finally let go.

And it felt very liberating.

Here are some other nostalgic pieces from the past. Like the binder where I kept all of our house ideas for years and years — floor plan ideas, decorating ideas, favorite magazine tear-outs, sketches, color inspiration.

Other books full of inspiration, more specific to scrapbooking and paper-crafting projects.

I know this will bring back some memories for some of you who have been familiar with my work from “long ago”. Behold … the sketches. Many, many, many sketches.

And some organizational stuff from several of my book projects. Lists & calendars & scheduling my tasks and deadlines. Some things never change. : )

Even my homemade Prismacolor colored pencil reference sheets. Nerdy? You bet. Necessary? I sure thought so at the time.

Oooooh. Anyone remember this album? I taught a Creating Keepsakes University class called “Snapshot of Me” that was all about telling the story of your life & personality right then & there in that time of your life. Anyone happen to be in one of my classes? This was from 5 years ago. I’m so glad I did that project. I’m even more glad that hundreds of others did it too. That’s a lot of story telling. A lot of life documenting.

Here are even more themed books that are currently sitting pretty in a cabinet.

And this … This. Wow. Talk about nostalgia. This album was the start of my very first little Project 365 – a picture every day of the year, starting January 2008 — just 3 years ago.

I used a photo album I picked up at Target, stayed faithful with my daily documenting until a very sick pregnancy took over my life that year. But the idea never died. It was only a matter of months that the concept came to be in the form of a scrapbooking kit. Of course this eventually evolved into what we now know as Project Life.

Kinda fun to come across that.

………………..

Oh, and one more thing. I came across a lot of homemade cards that I made over the years, especially ones that I designed specifically for my 2002 Creative Cards book. I’m hanging on to a few favorites.

But the rest of them? Good grief. Did I really hand-stitch pieces like this for a card?

Guess what? I’ve got a collection of about 40 cards — each one of them a unique handmade card by yours truly — and I am giving them away. The whole collection. Got a strong desire for handmade cards? Know of an upcoming auction that we could donate these to? Another way you plan to use the cards? Leave a comment and be sure to include your first name, city, and state. I’ll announce the winner by the end of the week.

…………..

Thanks for taking a stroll down memory lane with me.

  1. wow..you did a lot of organizing! don’t you just love that feeling of having things cleaned up, put away & purged?!
thanks for putting together a fun package for us :)

What a walk down memory lane that was! Now that I’m a faithful Project Lifer/divided page protector girl – and the layouts will be VERY few and far between, I need to really let go of the embellishments (minus brads and ribbon of course – must keep those). I don’t need those themed emblellishments taunting me anymore in my stash. I’m into simple, quick, memorable stuff now – inserting pictures and little tidbits of life into pockets and calling it good – actually, calling it wonderful.

Those handmade cards look great – couldn’t pass up the chance to snag them off of you!

Hmmm. At first I was going to pass on the cards. But I write to deployeed troops and thought, “this would be great to send to them.” Nothing says love to our troops like something homemade. I’d love to have them. And uh…maybe some of the other stuff you were getting rid of ;) haha.

Oh my word!! I most definitely will come back to get a full read here…I was just taking in all the eye candy! But, do want to say, while I am not scrapping the full on creative style I was a couple years ago (ordered Project Life last night & can’t wait for it to arrive! :>), I’m not getting rid of my stock, supplies, hoarded stash. Since I have let go (for the most part) of that style of scrapping, I have been freed up to enjoy other creative pursuits and find myself using some of those supplies there. And I feel much freeer (is that a word?!?! free-er…that’s oh so not right either!) to dehoard & use my supplies for whatever I want, including sharing them with my wee girl who has a strong creative streak and is always looking for any opportunity to use it!! :> LOVE an organizational post with all that eye candy!

Hi Becky! Along with my puppy, giving back is the main reason I have over come many hardships in my life, and most recently depression. I work with troubled youth and we encourage them to give back (and count their blessings) by making cards for children in homes or hospitals. Their work was impressive and very touching. To see young people with difficult lives encouraging other children who are struggling is God-like. And encouraging crafting and creativity as an additional outlet is meaningful too! I split your beautiful cards (and any other unneeded supplies) between my three sites to let young people pass on more encouragement, more hope and more light! That’d be as equally rewarding for me as they are like my children! Thank you for your consideration.

  8. I love the feeling when I get organizing my stuff, Really just going through everything. You said it, it is very liberating.

As for the cards. I would love to use them as a secret sister. I watch women who are going through very tough things and just need a little pick me up, a someone is thinking of you. That is what I would do, spread the joy with your amazing cards.

Hi Becky – please count me in on the card giveaway. I love cards! Love all the photos you have posted today. Do you think you will ever get back in to scrapbooking pages using bright papers, stickers etc? I love Project Life, this is my second year doing it, but have this huge urge to try some over the top pages with loads of embellishments and bright paper. Not sure where to begin though …? All the best :-)

Thank you for the chance to win a package of sunshine. I think those cards would be an awesome auction item in my girls’ upcoming school auction.

  14. Gypsy says:

Whoa! My husband applauded as I dumped years of Christmas cards on the paper recycle stack on Sunday! I kept the photo cards, since they fit in a very Christmas-y blank paper book I bought several years ago. But I threw away the rest of them.

I have a binder of reference sheets — all my Zig & Bic markers, ink colors, alpha stamp sets, other stamps, templates. I have a printed list of paper pads and albums! Oh, fancy edge scissors, and punches too. I haven’t done my reference sheets for my Prismacolor pencils or my Crayons or …
I DO use my reference book quite often. I think.

Friends think I’m crazy – referring to either of these. Now I know I have good company!

  15. Lucy says:

We are making cards at the moment to send to our troops, so they have a stash to send to their love ones as needed, as they are hard to purchase in remote areas… so I would give them to this cause if I won.

  16. Kim says:

Wow! That was a trip down memory lane and a good one at that! I did the Snapshot of Me Album class of yours and it is still one of my favorite albums to this day! I love looking at it!

I am the director of a formal dress giving organization that we have at our church. We provide formal dresses and accessories free of charge to junior and senior high school girls who could not otherwise afford to attend their prom/formal. We have a Boutique Day and treat these girls with lots of love and respect. It is a wonderful ministry and such a blessing to help these wonderful girls. We are always having fundraisers/auctions to raise money to buy dresses, shoes, formal purses, and jewelry. We never turn anyone away, we either buy a dress for them if we don’t have their size, or one of our wonderful seamstresses make her one. The cards would be a great fundraiser for us and another idea is to send one home with a girl, along with her dress/accessories, so she can send a handmade card to someone. Alot of these girls do not have nice things, we also get some from foster homes, and some have very ill parents. A thing such as a card that is handmade is just a treasure to them! We always send a goody bag with them and could put a card in there also.

Thanks for the chance and for the wonderful post of cleaning, organizing, and memories!

Ooh, ooh, auction here! My kid’s private school has a benefit auction coming up in March and each class puts a LARGE themed basket together for the live auction. My 4th grader’s class theme this year is “create”… this would be perfect!

I would love to use them for my “World Card Making Day” event I hold in October! We put cards together that are then packaged up and given to a local “hero” who puts together “Bailey’s Boxes” (full of supplies) and sends them off to troops overseas. http://blog.maricopachamber.com/general/a-note-from-aaron/ This past October, we put together 400 cards in just 2 hours! Thanks!!

I am amazed at your organizing skills. And the ability to remain organized with three children, house, and everything. I used to be at least 3/4 as good as you, but family life has messed me up a little bit, and keeping things organized as they used to be is always a work in progress. But I am improving, as I also learn to let go of things that have been cluttering my home for years, without being really useful. You have been an inspiration to my scrapbooking and card making since 2004, when somebody from the US gave me a copy of Creative Keepsakes magazine and your first book on sketches. It was an enlightment. Now also my scrapbooking style is evolving. I just cannot create full decorated pages like those I see in scrapbooking magazines. My style is simple, few embellishment (mostly brads, sometimes buttons). And now I am getting curious by your Project Life albums. But this is Germany, not Finland, and would be helpful to know how to order a set from here.
Thanks for your beautiful blog, it is always nice to read you and see your projects and get inspired.

  21. Jeanne Treptow says:

Hi Becky! I’d love your collection of cards for an auction for my Kindergartener’s school. They have an annual spaghetti dinner to raise funds for their tuition assistance fund! These would be great to put in a basket for the auction! I’d even bid on it! Several years ago I e=mailed you asking if you had anything to donate for this very dinner. At the time you did not, but here’s an opportunity for me to give this a shot!
I enjoy following your blog, and loved your 12 Days of Christmas videos, even though my bandwidth is, well, lacking!
    Have a great day!

  22. Stephanie says:

Becky- when my husband was deployed to Afghanistan last year, he sent myself and our son handmade cards periodically in the mail. The cards were a donation sent over by someone and made available for free to any troop that needed them. Those cards and letters made our day each time we received them. They were a special joy for my son, a tangible reminder that Dad loves him even when he’s not able to be at home… I live in Ramstein, Germany, and a lot of our service members go through this location on their way to deployed locations all over the world. If you send them to my APO address, I would be glad to take them into the local USO office at the Air Base airport terminal. From there they could get into the hands of our service guys and gals looking for a card to send home, to let their loved ones know they are being thought of… Just an idea, but whatever you do with the collection, I love that you care enough to donate (to something, somewhere) so they will go to a good cause. You are awesome!!! The world needs more people like you :) .

  23. Lori says:

I’m not creative enough to make them myself!!! I’d love to have your cards. Not to mention, my nieces are constantly doing fund raisers and such so they can continue doing competitive gymnastics. It’s very expensive and they have an auction every year and I am sure something like your card collection would do very well and help them so much!!!

I would use them for a friend who just found out she has cancer. We want to give her a card every day she is going through chemo.

  27. Barb M. says:

I would love anything made by you. I would save one for myself and the rest I would donate to the military card drive. They collect handmade cards for the service members to send to their families. Many of the places the military go to do not have access to stores and the folks run out of cards and stationary. I have been making them cards from my stash for years. Thanks for the inspiration to clear the clutter and for the chance to win your cards.

  28. Susan Smith says:

I love homemade cards but don’t find much time to make any right now; I’m pretty busy at home with a 20 month old and a 3.5 month old.

  29. Jennifer says:

Loved the nostalgic look back… I need to go through my office. Would love to win handmade cards instead of going to Hallmark. :)

  37. Daisy says:

I recognized about 4 sketches that I used for scrapbook pages! I loved the one on the bottom right, with the large semi-circle. I scrapped my daughter playing tennis with that sketch and used a tennis ball photo for the large circle! It’s one of my favorite layouts! I still use your sketch books, even though I’m a digi-scrapper!

  38. Erin says:

Love it… makes me want to go through my closet in office -which is a hodge podge of all stuff…
As for the cards, we have a auction once a year to benefit the Childrens Advocacy Center – helping kids who can’t help themselves…. These would help out!

  40. Kay Drenth says:

Wow! That was a journey into the past! How fun!

I myself don’t need any cards as I am a SU! demo and make more than I can ever use! lol Can I nominate them to go somewhere though? I donate cards to a non-profit called Operation Write Home. They send handmade cards over to our deployed troops around the world so they can send home to their families. Sandy, the lady that runs it, is such a wonderful soul and I know she would be grateful!

Send them to Operation Write Home! They are a non-profit that sends blank cards to troops overseas, so that they can then send cards home to their families.

  45. Laura says:

Love purging and organizing. I also need to have a major overhaul of my creative space. I would admire the cards, maybe snap a few pictures for my POTD (very cool to have cards from Becky in the house!) and then find a cool way to use them. Maybe notes to soldiers or some kind of auction to raise $$ for Haiti which is currently my 7 year old’s latest obsession/charity of choice. Thanks for the chance!! and all the good motivation! ~Laura

I love your walk down memory lane and that you servived the throw away process! I think all moms get to a place of needing to clean and purge. KidsLink Downrange by Cadence Ministries is an organization our MOPS group works with to create cards for children whose parents are serving overseas in the military. This allows them to communicate with their parent whenever they choose and not have to rely on the stateside parent for assistance. We’ve been doing this for 3 years and have sent over 300 kits to children. It’s amazing to hear the stories from the children and how it ministers to them during this difficult time. Here is a link for more information: http://www.cadence.org/ministries/projects. We’d love to use your cards to minister to even more children and their parents.

    Thanks,

  51. ElRae says:

Love the organizing going on. It makes things feel so fresh again! Would love the card set. I love to give out cards to people at my school for things going on (and handmade ones are much more personal). Teachers need a little something to brighten their day now and then. Have been so busy this year with the kiddos needs and my own family that it is hard to find time to make fun stuff.

I am in my Young Women Organization in my ward, and the only way we can go to camp this summer is by doing an auction/fundraiser! As much as I LOVE your stuff, I would give up having them for me (unless I bid on them!), and use them to earn money for our camp!

I would love to win the cards. I committed to make some cards for my neighbor’s daughter to sell to raise money for a mission trip. Well, my mom became ill for 6 months and I could not complete the card commitment. I felt so bad, but I needed to take care of Mom. Anyway, if I won your cards I would donate them to my neighbor girl for her next mission trip. Thanks!

We have 8 young men who have the opportunity to go to the World Scout Jamboree in Sweden this July and August thanks to a very generous anonymous donor as part of the Utah LDS Contingent. It is a great piece of history!! I can’t thank you enough for that gift because I (still) don’t take many pictures of myself, although I’d like to think I am more “present” in my scrapbooks because of that class!!

We have an auction here in Central Illinois to benefit the American Diabetes Association. I have been Type 1 diabetic for over 30(!) years and think it is a great cause!! I am sure whereever the cards go they will be greatly appreciated!

    Hi Becky!

LOL I have to say, this is my life right now…have pledged to myself to go through EVERY SINGLE part of the house this year (!) I started in the attic- done, storage area with waaaay too many gift boxes saved-done, kids playroom which is going to be remade into my daughter’s bedroom – working on now…I have a 3 story house plus a basement so I am with you on cleaning out!!!!

Thanks for the pix and the inspiration! Love looking at how other people organize their things!

Hi Becky, Thanks for all the sharing…I LOVE seeing photos! Isn’t almost scary the things we hang onto. We are getting ready to move cities soon so there will be alot of purging and clearing out. I am excited for it but at the same time I dread getting rid of stuff. If I am in the right frame of mind I can be cut throat in clearing out but if not I keep pretty much everything!…wish me luck….Given where I am right now with my life cards are what I do. I have not found time to scrapbook….I am going to be starting Project Life on moving day and document the 1st yr of our life in a new city. It seems fitting.
    Take care.

This post speaks to me, as I love organizing…AAAND trips down memory lane… and the cards are a fun part of that – sounds like they’d be a great contribution to any of the auctions commented on above…

The TRUE gem in the post is the BABY PROJECT LIFE!!! So, so fun to see how the idea was born. Project Life has completely changed my life and I loved seeing it’s beginning. I can only imagine the *moment* when you really decided that it can be done. This product could be and needed to be created. You ran with an idea that is now helping thousands of others to document their lives in a simple, beautiful, non-stressful way!

All I can say is thanks. Thanks A LOT! :)

Also, I have a thought about the Christmas cards… I punch a hole in the corner of all of them and then put a ring through them. I’ve only done it a few years, but my idea is to then set them out in a basket in the living room to have to look through every season.

Since I have been such a fan for so long I was thrilled that you were not keeping any Christmas cards since I was trying to make the same decision myself. Thanks for making that easier. 101. Chris says:

I love these little bits from your life that provide inspiration in areas even outside of scrapbooking. I only have the last two years of Christmas cards (2009 and 2010) to still do something with. I know exactly what I will do, just need to sit and do it. I DO keep all of the photo cards though, and treat them just like photos. It’s nice to look back and see my cousins and friends’ families growing, etc. Thanks so much for guiding us through your decision-making process.

  102. Krista says:

I would love to donate them to a group called Sufficient Grace Ministries for them to auction off. They are a group that helps out newly bereaved families that have lost children. You can check them out at Sufficient Grace Ministries for Women (and Families) Inc. on facebook to see what they are about. Recently they made Comfort bears to give to bereaved mamas and the auctions help to cover costs and shipping which they do all over the country.

They have an annual gala each year in June to raise money for kids to go to “CAMP”. Sick kids getting a chance to be like all their friends and enjoy a week of Summer Camp. The families never pay and it from donations that this is all possible.

The gala has a Chinese Auction, and your cards would make a GREAT basket.

Great post, Becky! And you’ve inspired me to purge my old Christmas greeting/photo cards too. (I have saved them for as many years as you.) I was just looking at last Christmas’ pile yesterday and wondering what to do with it. Ironically, I was just thinking about going through my stash of scrapbooking materials and purging some of them. Thanks, again, for the inspiration.

  112. Krys72599 says:

Would LOVE it if you would donate them to my brand new, just created scrapping group at work!
There are a couple of us who are scrappers (traditional and newly digital) but many women joined who have never scrapped before! I’d love to show them what can be done when you’re not making scrapbooks – I brought in one of my cards to show them and they were amazed that you could actually make your own cards…. We meet once a week at lunch and I’m hoping to convert some ladies over – in fact, I’m bringing in my Project Life in a couple of weeks, after there are a few spreads complete in there so they can see them…

  113. ShellyJ says:

Awe … a trip down memory lane! love it, so fun. I hope you didn’t toss out those sketches, I would gladdly take them off your hands for you. you are the first scrapbooker that i really “connected” with when i began my scrapbooking journey in 2001. you are the one who guided me in my picture a day journey back in 2009 and continue on to this day. i should really thank you for all the memories you have helped me preserve … so thank you with all my heart. you are just awesome.

I do, however, think that giving them to a good cause is a great idea! I would suggest the Women’s Prison Book Project — they provide books for women’s prisons across the country, and a card for the women to send to their loved ones might be just the thing to encourage them!

  117. JenG says:

I recognize a lot of these from a magazine I have of yours from about 10 yrs ago, I loved that magazine and I think that your style is classic. Would love a chance to win them!

I wish I had thought to take photos of all the stuff I purged when we made the big move from Alaska back to Montana last summer. Everything we have had to fit into a 20′ trailer, pickup truck, and the back end of our Durango. This included our large dog, our freezer, 4 dressers, a dining room table, our king size bed, 4 bikes, and two lawn mowers. Needless to say, it didn’t end up with much room to take all the STUFF I’ve collected and saved. It mostly went to our garage sale and to my kid’s schools. What a great thing to document. As for the cards? I always like to keep a stash of home-made cards on hand and yours are super cute! Plus, how else can I fill up on more stuff;)

What an inspiring post! I have a craft/hobby room in my basement that I’m great at organizing but not so good at using. But I have a lot of other areas in my house that I could go through much better. I have inherited some of my Grandma’s tendencies to say, “but I may need that someday!” Guess I might have to change that someday and get started today…or tonight since this is my in office day.

If I won the cards I would donate them to our school auction/fundraiser. Thanks for the idea ;)

    Becky,
Thanks for this post! I have followed you for a long time, but especially after we had our first children the same year. I still have the Creating Keepsakes with the pages of Porter’s album. I have always loved your simple classic style, and I have the homemade cards book too! I have to admit to only making a couple of them, though, and I laughed out loud when you said “did I seriously hand stitch on these cards?” Now that I also have three children, I am feeling so much freedom in letting go as well. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE a collection of your handmade cards!!! I love to give cards and love to make them, but well…… you certainly know how it is! It would feel great to bless the people in my life with a homemade card AND at the same time help alleviate some clutter from your home office! ;) Thank you for the chance! Thank you for continuing to inspire at every stage of life.

So funny you posted this today! 14 years ago my mother and I had to move houses quickly – my mother had spent the 12 previous years living with and caring for her ill parents and when they passed away her sisters decided we had 30 days to sell everything of theirs and move. We wound up just throwing things into boxes and storing it all in the basement and garage of the duplex we moved to. Flash forward to now and I’ve been transferred to a new city and we’re moving to a small townhouse that I’ve been able to buy. The catch? No storage and we haven’t gone through those boxes in the garage and basement. We’re finding documents from 1988! However our motto is “Shred it” and we’ve been able to separate the emotional attachment to clutter we haven’t seen in 14 years. Why exactly would we need 14 sets of glassware? Thanks again for the reminder that things aren’t important unless they’re useful.

Becky, your timing couldn’t be more perfect. I have some friends in Iowa whose 4-year old daughter, Anna, was diagnosed with cancer late last year. They are having a benefit and silent auction for her family on February 26th and my friends are trying to gather items for the benefit. It would be awesome to donate your awesome cards to the auction. Here is a link to the website that was put together to help out the Weitz family. http://www.annabananaweitz.blogspot.com.

I scrapbook with a bunch of talented women each month. In our community there is a non-pprofit organization – Child Resource Development that work with babies and toddlers with disabilities and developmental delays. Each month we are commited to making a basket of scrapbook supplies, or scrapbook album or cards, or something to be used in their annual auction to raise funds for these programs to help these children. 216. Sandee says:

Oh Becky, I’d love for you to give those cards to my best friend. She’s the sister I never had. We love to make cards together, but haven’t had the opportunity this year because she got called to be the early morning seminary teacher. She has four of her own children to take care of and now she spends all of her “free time” preparing to teach these kids. She doesn’t have time to do fun stuff for herself like make cards, but she has the most giving spirit and loves to send cards. She struggles so much with being prepared to teach a class of teenagers every morning, and getting up before 5:00 so that she can be there ready to go by 6:00 every morning is such a challenge. It would mean so much for her to win these cards so that she could spread joy to other people with a handmade card. Thanks.

How exciting and liberating at the same time. I am in the process of it myself and have come across some of the same things. I have a drawer of eyelets that I just can’t part with.

Our Elementary school is holding their annual silent auction and dinner that brings in a lot of money for our school. A basket with your cards, any other items you might donate and a gift card to a new local scrapbook store called Green Tangerines would make a wonderful donation.

These auctions over the years have brought smart classrooms to each classroom on campus. All of the proceeds go to very worthwhile causes…our children.

    Thanks so much.

One thing I do with some memorabilia that I finally let go? I take pictures of them. Some might say that this is then simply cluttering my computer or photo collection, but I don’t necessarily plan to scrapbook any of these things, unless they’re important to me or our family, but they then can serve as less cluttery memories instead of them taking up precious physical space. I still have a lot to do in that regard, but last summer I was able to get rid of several boxes in our garage because of this method. Then I donated all of the things that were worthwhile to Goodwill. :)

Our local high school bagpipe band (Weston McEwen Pipes and Drums) has an annual dinner and auction in April to raise money for a trip. These trips take 4 years to earn enough money to go on. The kids went to Washington DC, Philadelphia PA, and New York City in 2009. They performed at the Statue of Liberty on Stanton Island, on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, and the Old Post Office in Washington DC. They also traveled to London, Paris, in 2004 and performed with another high school bagpipe band in Scotland. They have made us proud representing our small town. These cards would be a wonderful donation. My oldest daughter got the opportunity to go on the DC trip, and my younger daughter is looking forward to going on the next trip in 2013. The kids have to earn their own money to go with some donations for the whole pipe band.

    Thank you for your consideration!

Hello!!! Great job on the purging!!! I think I need to follow in your footsteps w/ regard to all of those old xmas cards — it’s amazing how fast they pile up!!!

  234. Rebecca Foxworth says:

As much as I love your stuff (I recognize all your projects, as I have been following your work for a LONG time), the cards should definitely NOT go to me! I’m doing the same thing you’re doing. Buh-bye to everything I no longer need, love, or have time for (our local senior center is going to benefit from a lot of free scrapbooking stuff). So why am I commenting?

When Project Life was just beginning, you mentioned you were NOT doing PL for your childrens’ albums…that you were still doing traditional scrapbooking for those. With your decluttering, I’m wondering if you ARE still scrapbooking your childrens’ albums in the traditional way, or if you’ve changed the way you document in those albums, also. And, if so, would you share with us?

    Thank you.

I’m representing my church for our city’s annual “Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast”, modeled after the President’s National Prayer Breakfast. I’m on the committee which takes a year to plan the event. Our focus this year is “health” and “prayer”. I have found an organization I hope to spotlight at the breakfast that is located in our local highschool called “The Shelf”– it is the in-house food shelf and hygiene supply for our schools 21 HOMELESS students! I was shocked to find that we have homeless children and teens in our community! We hope to increase health and spirituality in our community through our Prayer Breakfast, and we will have many people to thank in the end. What a blessing your cards would be in our Minnesota community. Thank you for the opportunity to try for your give-away!

I’d like the cards to give to our two daughters (both 11). I’ve been teaching them since they were very young the importance of sending thank you cards, birthday cards and random notes to people throughout the year – and they’ve done an amazing job of showing kindness through cards and notes. This would be a great gift to them to show them how much I appreciate them taking time out of their lives to write notes/cards to others.

Gasp!! I cannot believe you threw away the Christmas cards!! I know I am not the keeper of other people’s memories, but I am the keeper of mine. Christmas cards are a part of my history… my history of friends and family. I love that I have cards from loved ones who have and will pass away… their love put into a card, their handwriting, their thoughtfulness, proof that they loved/cared for me… I could not bare throwing those away.

Kudos to you for purging the rest of the “stuff”… now those items I could easily let go of!

P.S. I’m a Project Lifer! Thank you for your hard work on that concept! :)

Hi Becky, I would love to win these BEAUTIFUL cards ! I have the perfect place for them….you see, there is a 5 year old little girl in our community that was recently diagnosed with leukemia. Her name is Aly and we are having an all day breakfast, lunch, and supper benefit for her, along with a bidding auction and a silent auction. We are trying to raise funds for her family as they have to travel for her medical needs, let alone all of her medical bills that have piled up. This is a very sweet family with 5 children who needs our community support. I think these cards would and could bring in some money for a great cause! Please pray for little Aly! She IS a fighter! Thank you in advance for your consideration! Amy

We are a member of Kate’s Club. It is an organization for children who have lost a parent or sibling. This group has been a wonderful blessing to my youngest son and even I. Allowing children who have experienced loss to come together and share with an understanding that only comes from walking in each other’s shoes. Similarly the parents who are widows and widowers meet and do not feel so alone. ;-) Now I’d love to give back as a Philanthropist for the organization and include your cards at the next auction and dinner function. I enjoy your posts; the funny ones with your choice of wording are my favorite because they brighten my day (like the broken fruit ornament-thingy today made me laugh. Yes, that was awesome of him breaking it so you could see what was inside—just like cracking a geode).

  282. Kelly says:

I love a good purge, feels so freeing and motivating at the same time! Good for you! If you choose me for the giveaway of the cards or any of the other materials I would be most appreciative on behalf of the two children’s groups that I work with. First group is a very small grade school of less than 100 students and we are organizing a hearts for jesus talent show/dinner fundraiser where the proceeds will go to world relief-haiti and the other group is a local cub scout pack -we could use the cards as part of one of our outreach/community projects. Thanks again and love the look down memory lane with you!

I love going through my goodies and organizing and purging. We are in the military, so it is something that happens automatically every 1.5-3 years due to moving. If I were to win the giveaway, I’d send them to a unit of deployed soldiers. They are always looking for cards to send back home to loved ones. :)

  286. nicole says:

Oh my… I thought you had been doing Project Life for YEARS and to know it was started in 2008 proves how awesome the product is!!! I order mine for the first time this week and it was shipped yesterday! I was so excited last night that I husband thinks I have lost my mind… but I take about 15000 picture a year of my two little boys so to have 2011 organized will be AWESOME!!!!

I don’t know if I could give the cards away but I would send them to all my family and friends!

    Nicole, Cave City, KY

  287. Kathy M says:

I’d like to nominate a friend of mine, Teen Shuman, as someone who would love to receive your hand made cards. She has graciously and enthusiastically opened her home to group of us( about 8-20 people depending on the day) to scrap once and often twice a month. She and her husband are very active in their church; often having missionaries as guests in their home. They currently have a nephew living with them while he attends college. Teen sends out many cards: birthday, anniversary, get-well, sympathy, thank you, you name it. She loves hand made cards, but never feels comfortable making them herself. She would get a big kick out of receiving your cards!

  288. Dana says:

I love your cards and still refer to your books for ideas. I am single, no kids and found (until Project Life) that scrapbooking was very difficult because besides work, I don’t have alot to scrap about. So I made cards, and still do. Loooooveeee handmade cards and my friends and family do to. If I were to win, I would probably keep one for myself and frame it, yes frame it! To have a Becky Higgins original would be awesome. Then the rest I would send to my friends and family.

  289. slammie says:

Love the trip down memory lane! If the cards are generic enough you could either donate to a hospital or to the service men/women for them to write home.

The cards look wonderful! I would save them to use for a fundraiser in the fall I will be helping with. I am currently president of our school and parish’s ‘Performing Arts Boosters’ group. We help raise money to support the band, vocal ensemble, annual musical performance at the school for grades 3-8, and also the church’s music groups. We are going to have a Halloween Bash in October to raise more money, and do basket raffles as part of that. I’d love to have the opportunity to include these!!!

This was fun to read and see the photos. I recognize some of the things and it did bring back memories. I would love the cards. I would keep some (after all they are Becky Higgins cards) and donate the rest to our Church’s school fund raiser. thanks.

  296. taranicole says:

Wow — I would love to take these cards the my girls group at church, have them sign their names and send them off to one of the many “Cards for Kids” projects — sending encouraging cards to kids battling diseases they should never EVER have to battle…

This was a fun post to read. I cleaned out/organized scrapbooking supplies last summer. There were things that I just decided I had to let go-things I bought that seemed like a good idea at the time but were never used. While I hated letting go of things that I’d spent money on, it felt so good to pare down what I have.

  321. I would LOVE your cards! I used to make handmade cards for all of my family members (between my husband and I we have 47 in our immediate families), but then we moved to Taiwan. Interesting that you are in this organizing, culling phase right now as I have been doing similar. DD (8) has been in the tiny bedroom since birth. It’s now time to switch her to the craft/home office/spare room mess that is anything but organized so I have been sorting, storing, organizing, tossing things like a mad woman. I am hoping to be ready to paint in a month or so.

Thanks for the chance to win.

  326. Katy says:

    Hi Becky!

I absolutely LOVE your ideas and projects! You are so talented! I love to make cards and crafts myself, but as you know with three little ones, I don’t always have the time. I have an Aunt who was recently diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The disease is taking over so quickly! She is a retired nurse who worked in the NIC U and has an amazing personality and gift of gab! This disease has greatly affected her speech and now is affecting her mobility. She has always been the one to send cards and make calls to express her love! I would love to “win” your cards for others to share with her! It would be a great reminder for her to see how much she is loved and by how many families and friends she has touched.

Thanks Becky for all that you share with the world every day! I am doing Project Life for the first time and really taking time for family and friends and appreciating the small moments in life. As I look at my aunt, I know in my heart to treasure every minute!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart,

    Shopping/ Brad Storage Questions-Please Help!

If Anyone knows (or Becky has time to reply :-) what containers are used for the brad photo. All of the small square containers with brads affixed to the outside is so clever. I am wondering what brand the small square containers are and also the large container they are all stored in. I need to know the brand and where purchased if possible. I would really appreciate it. I went thru my brads and flowers last night and found a ton that I didn’t even know I had, I have also gotten rid of a lot, but now I need a better way to store them so I don’t keep buying ones I already have (don’t you hate that?) Becky’s solution would totally work for me. Please help

I love homemade cards. I love cards in general. Perhaps I am old-fashioned, but I love sending cards to family and friends for holidays and any other time I feel prompted to. My daughter did a YW project and hand made cards for the Ronald McDonald house in Salt Lake. We live about 4 hours from there so we took a weekend, made arrangements for a tour, and she was able to deliver them and spend some time there. I had a nephew that was at Primary Childrens for 3 months so we know first hand the benefit of having somewhere for families to stay. They loved the cards and she loved the experience!

  334. Steffani says:

I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to get this!! I have two plans: one, because I have been such a fan of yours for so long, and your creativity is such an inspiration to me, I would pick a couple of my favorites from the bunch and frame them as home decor. Second, as it was my New Year’s Resolution to keep more in touch with family and friends, remember birthdays, etc. I would have a treasured stash to hand out to loved ones through the year!!

  335. Laura T. says:

Wow – you really are purging big time! I really need to start doing this. I have SO many products that I forget I have that just sit in my supply inventory … for years. Now, speaking of cards … I love receiving homemade cards, but putting them together, is just something I don’t do. I don’t know if I don’t feel creative enough to make cards, or what it is. So, with that said, I would LOVE to win your cards because I would love to send out homemade cards to friends/family instead of store purchased cards.

Hi! We are in the middle of our fundraiser auction (2/25) for my son’s elementary school. This is my first year (my baby’s in Kindergarten!!) and I would love to be able to have these cards as a donation to the auction. Our PTA had a hard last year (I’m sure everyone has) and this would really help out. Lots of the normal donors (police and fire) haven’t done anything this year, so we are really struggling. This would make an awesome addition – I know we have a ton of scrapbookers and card makers!!

Thanks for a great blog – love to read your decorating tips! :)

I am pretty sure the containers are from Cropper Hopper. They have several sizes, I have used them a lot.

Also just wanted to share that I too had a great big clean out of old stuff from scrapbooking because I like many others that follow this blog have changed the way I scrapbook. I just don’t have time to do all the fussy stuff of scrapbooking. I am also trying my hand at digital, it takes up much less space. I gave a FULL car load of stuff to an arts organization locally that resells various products in their store to fund art programs for kids. Win – Win! They thought they hit the jackpot!

I, too, am in the process of cleaning my scrapbooking room. A fellow scrapbooker in Sun Prairie, WI lost everything in a home fire last week. Our group is collecting extra supplies for her, and trying to re-collect things that she lost in the fire. While we can’t replace everything that she lost, I am sure she’d really appreciate these cards.

I’m SO glad you wrote this entry. I was just thinking last night about uncluttering and specifically thought about getting rid of the Christmas cards we’ve received over the years that I’ve been hanging on to. You’re right—I’ve never pulled them out and looked at them. I think I will throw them out, per your example……Maybe I will just keep the family pictures people have sent.

Would love your cards! Promise I won’t toss those!

I teach Kindergarten in a small Christian school. This spring we will have our annual auction. I would greatly appreciate the handmade cards so that my class could enter the collection as an item for the silent auction. The auction covers some of our operating expenses and adds to our scholarship fund. The scholarship fund is for families that would like to have their children in a Christian school but can not afford to pay the full tuition. Thank you for even considering my school.

PURGE…it’s a great feeling. Letting go is sometimes the best thing! I was forced to do this (not by choice), but due to some water damage in our basement I had to go through a lot of stuff and finally got rid of a lot things I don’t need/use anymore. Thank God none of my scrapbooks were destroyed. I took a picture of the mess for my PL and documented the sucky day I had when I discovered the water damage. That’s life!

What an amazing giveaway Becky!! Yes, I would likely contribute them as well. But….how could you not keep at least 1 or 2 BH originals for your collection! :) I recently relocated and reorganized my scraproom. And, three of the very few books that made the cut were My Creative Companion 2, Scrapbooking Secrets and Creative Sketches. I know they older but they were so well used (and loved) that I couldn’t part with them. They were a big part of my early days of falling in love with this hobby! Thanks again for the great giveaway!

  379. Lori Wolfe says:

I just spent last weekend with help from my dear hubby building a wall of storage for my years of accumulation of scrapbooking supplies! I purged and donated alot of items and it felt very “lightening” of my new organized space! I realized that I really needed to use up my stuff before I hit the upcoming conventions! I feel a purge coming in the next year! Ha!

  380. Amy E. says:

Awesome! I would absolutely have a use for these cards!! Amy E. in Windber, PA

  381. Wow…I love cards! What a great giveaway! I think the first books I had of yours were the creative lettering and the cards one!
LOVE that you are de-junking. I can’t believe you kept all those Christmas cards for so long! I’m not even good at keeping my own, I must admit! Good for you for getting rid of stuff you don’t really need. I think that is the best feeling!

  384. Mary says:

I am a primary special education teacher and I can ALWAYS use cute cards to send good notes home with my students! Also, I was in one of your Snapshot of Me classes…it is so strange to look back at my life five years ago! That March I was mourning a recent New Years Eve breakup, I was in a job I didn’t really enjoy after graduating the previous May, and my wonderful father was still alive. Now I am in the best relationship of my life, I got my Masters in Education and have a rewarding job with students I love, and my father died in July 2007. I am SO happy I specifically took pictures with him for the 2nd page that listed all of my roles- one word I spelled out was daughter, and I took a nice picture with him I’m so glad I have today.

  385. Christine says:

Just by glancing at your cards, I can tell that they are wonderful. Being a card maker myself I can appreciate the work that goes into each one. 387. Kim Wakefield says:

Becky I have followed you you years. I have always wanted to attend one of your classes, but family and life has kept me busy, so I never could find the time. Thats what makes Project Life so great. The PL process really helps me make better use of my time. GREAT!!!
Just thought I would share what my family does with the Christmas cards we receive during the holidays. We collected them in a basket during the holidays. And starting at the beginng of each new year we pull one out and pray for that family or business at dinner or at night as a family. Then we place that card in the back of the stack of cards and the next night pull out the next card and repeat the process all year long. That way every card (family) gets prayed for multiple times though the year. This Christmas card prayer has been a tradition or us for years. I can’t wait to make it apart of my PL this year. Thanks Kim

The cards are beautiful and more so because they are hand made. Recently I have volunteered at my son’s school to help with our annual fundraiser. After seeing your cards I thought, like many others from the above posts, that they would make a wonderful addition to our fundraiser. Not only are they beautiful but unique as well. 424. alison says:

    Hi Becky
I got super excited when I saw these pictures because it was those cards that first introduced me to you. I LOVED your Creative cards books ( borrowed my Mum’s) and have searched and searched for them to purchase – is there ANYWHERE that still sells them ? :)
Anyway, so it was so cool to see those same familiar cards on here. I have been inspired by a lot of them over the years!! I just love the simplicity yet professionalism of the designs and haven’t been able to find anything else like it on the market.

Well, we have already been blessed with our precious son who joined our family through the miracle of adption. We’d love to adopt again but at the moment it’s not possible for us. If I won the cards (I’d be tempted to keep them all as I am crazily sentimental and it would be so cool to own a handmade item by you! :) …but I won’t…) I’d sell the whole collection as an ebay auction and put all the money from the sale into our savings for our adoption dream. Adoption is so hard and expensive here in Australia so every little bit helps so much.
And if for some reason we are unable to proceed with the adoption I will give that money to help others adopt.
There are so many great ideas here, I have no idea how you’ll choose but I just wanted to say I think it’s so awesome you thought of doing this and are being so generous- whoever wins it sounds like your creative gifts will be used to really bless someone.
And finally congratulations on such a great job cleaning and sorting!! What a huge accomplishment. I have een trying to sort out my small collection of stuff and find it overwhelming so I am very impressed by your efforts , and inspired too.
    Thanks, Becky,
    Alison (Canberra, Australia)

    What an inspiring article.

As for what to do with your stuff, I have two suggestions. Donate cards and other materials to your nearest Senior Citizen’s Center. Also, the families at your nearest Ronald MacDonald house (or similar facility that offers support to families of seriously ill chilcren) would love these materials, I’ll bet.

First of all, I am a big fan. Thanks for the inspiration! I feel that these cards should go the troops. What an uplifting thing to receive during a non-holiday time. I have seen several blogs that make cards for the troops. Also, seeing your pic of the word “grateful” immediately took my thoughts to the troops. What a great & thoughtful gift!

On a side note, I have successfully converted several of my friends into PL fans!

    Hi Becky-
I am a 4th grade teacher in VA. I have a class of 19 wonderful students! We are trying to raise money to get a smartboard for our classroom. I would love to WIN these cards to have in our classroom to inspire the kids to make some. We could then sell them to earn some cash for our Smartboard. Our class info. is on DigitalWish.com. We have raised $350, so far, we have about $800 more to go.

We could also sell yours, but I would mostly love to have them to inspire those craftminded students in my class, who would truly be motivated! Thank you for this opportunity!

  497. Nicole says:

I love your work and the cards are great. If I were to win the cards, I think I would probably keep a couple for myself, but the rest I would donate to my kids’ school for their annual fundraising auction. The school holds a nice dinner and silent auction to benefit the school. Because the school holds this one large fundraising event each year, we don’t have to sell chocolate bars, wrapping paper, etc. throughout the year. I dislike having to sell things door to door (can anyone say Girl Scout cookies), so I’m glad the school doesn’t require it. I usually donate something I’ve made for the auction, but these cards would be a nice addition.

I would love to have some becky cards! I am cleaning my office, too. I came across my old Creative Clips & Fonts CDs. Didn’t you help/create the designs? 507. Maria says:

Even though my stash is low (going back to school full-time has cut back my creative time a bit), I think it would be wonderful to donate the cards to the Ronald McDonald House. I spent an evening there (in my home city of Las Vegas), with my son’s National Junior Honor Society. We cooked the evening meal for those staying there. The resident manager took us on a tour and let me just say…..WOW!! What an amazing place. Every need is thought of for families who need to stay there. They do not have to worry about food, sleeping arrangements, how or where to do laundry, etc., all so they can spend the needed time at hospitals and care facilities with their loved one. They have stationery and cards available so that families staying there can send thank you notes, notes home, etc. and I think it would be awesome for them to have this collection. I would be happy to deliver them on your behalf. Just an idea :)

So, what do you do with your stuff you want to part with, (aside from the cards you’re giving away)?

I’ve been going thru all my stuff this year as well, and have come up with quite a group of things to part with, but not sure what to do with it. Things like the Lisa Bearnson ideas books from QVC, a Xyron machine, sets of rubber stamps. Not just paper, stickers and embellishements.

In the past I’ve used Ebay for such things, but they don’t seem to move like they use to.
    So, just curious.

    Thanks

  526. Michelle Smith says:

Hi Becky! This is Michelle (Lapka) Smith… from Vistancia kindergarten

I am involved in a few organizations that send care packages to service men & women overseas. We send everything from snacks and treats, magazines, and literature, all the way to everyday needs like deodorant and toothbrushes. One of the most asked for items from the service men & women is blank greeting cards- so that they can send them to their loved ones. They can’t exactly just go pick one up from the neighborhood drugstore, and sending greeting cards allows them to communicate with loved ones and be a part of a “normal” activity. I would love to take these cards off your hands, and give them to someone who would truly appreciate the sentiment.

Thanks for your consideration, and best of luck in your Spring cleaning. No more hoarding!! :)

I think a great idea would be to use those cards to bring cheer to elderly and infirm who live in convalescent homes…

I’m running a school right now with our missions organization, and it would be a great project for my 12 girls to write in them and then spend an afternoon handing them out with goodies and smiles….

I’m pretty proud of you to give them away! It would be hard for me to give away my own creations at this point in time!!!!

    Thanks for your inspiration.

Good grief. Did I really hand-stitch pieces like this for a card?

is what many of us thought/think as we read some scrapbooking magazines. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the inspiration from the magazines, but some of it is just way. too. much. Funny to see you come over to this side of things. And I mean all of this in the nicest of ways!!!

    I love organizing pictures!!!

I am also very grateful for my Snapshot of Me album. My life has changed so much since then. I no longer live there. I no longer have that job. I no longer have that CAREER. I have finished graduate school. My life has completely changed since then.

But I have photos to document the places I went, the errands, the stores, the products, the friends, the day to day living I did back then. It is hard for me to look at that album but some day I will be glad to see what my life was like back then.

You know what I threw out a couple years ago in the name of cutting down? Scrapbook pages. Yep, actual scrapbook pages. Bc I am not the documentor of OTHERS’ memories. Just mine. One page to remember someone else’s mom’s birthday party that I attended is just fine. I didn’t need to keep the other 5 pages with every photo I shot of someone else’s family on it. The invitation, a couple of the best pictures, and the journaling is enough to keep. So I enjoyed making those extra pages and it was fun, and I could let those pages go.
