You get what you get and you don’t throw a fit.
I don’t remember when I started saying this but probably around the time our kids were old enough to be picky about what food we were serving at the dinner table. And I certainly know I’m not alone in this expression. Raise your hand if those words have escaped your mouth.
It’s not just about food though.
Sometimes life just doesn’t feel fair. Sometimes we’re dealt stuff that makes us feel like complaining and bickering. The thing is — life is made up of this stuff. It’s unavoidable. And we either complain about it or we make the most of a tough situation. We can choose to think long & hard about what lessons we are to learn from the experience. And then we can be better for it. But we have to choose that. We have to choose to not “have a fit”.
This is part of cultivating a good life.
So here is the friendly yet bold reminder, in a printable JPG format … 3 colors to choose from in various sizes. Just head over to the Free Stuff page to download whatever you want.
Put this in your kitchen area to remind your kids to not be picky. Have it on your desk as a reminder to keep on keepin’ on, even when you’re not loving the next item on your to-do list. Wherever you use the print, may it be a simple reminder to keep your chin up, try new things, and have a positive attitude about it all.
…..
By the way, have you noticed the color change on my website? If not, refresh. Valentines is over so the red went buh-bye and we’re moving on to a fresh coat of paint around here.

I love this! We say this here all the time too! Thanks for the freebie:)
I love this!!!! I don’t when we started saying it either but it’s the best thing ever. Never thought of making a sign for it but that’s perfect! Thank you!
I tell my kids this all the time!
Super cute! Thanks Becky!
We use a variation of the saying at work. (I work at a preschool and they are constantly fighting over what colored cup they want for snack/lunch!)
“You get what you get, and you don’t get upset!”
I also work in a preschool and we use the same version! Surprisingly it usually works!
we say “you get what you get …and you don’t get upset!”
Totally LOVE it! Got it from my step-daughter, Kyleigh, who learned it from her teacher. I use it with my Day Care Kiddos all. the. time. And they can quote it now too!!
I was a preschool teacher (before kids) and we used to say a similar phrase: “You get what you get and you don’t get upset!”
I always tell my kids “you get what you get and you don’t get upset” I don’t even have to finish it now – just ‘you get…” and they finish it for me.
Great new freebie. It reminds me of the book Pinkalicous (one of my daughters favorites), one of the lines is “You get what you get and you don’t get upset.”
Love it! It’s in Pinkalicious and one of the best Kindergarten teachers EVER teachers her class this saying!
we use this line a bit in my childcare. the kids brought it home from either preschool or school once & we adopted it
that has always been one of my favorite expressions, as a mom and a teacher, it fits many situations. Thanks for the freebie.
As a kindergarten teacher, before kids, I would often say “You get what you get, and you don’t get upset. Might be time to intoduce that to my own kids. Ages 3 & 2. Thanks for freely sharing your creativity. Long time fan, first time commenter!
Thanks. This will be a great reminder for our kitchen, as whining about food seems to be a constant battle in our house. We’ve been using this saying since my oldest (who’s now 6) learned it in preschool!
We’re another family that says “upset.” I don’t want my kids to start saying “git.”
But the meaning is fabulous, and I really should use it more often!
I am going to school to be an elementary teacher. The teacher in one of the schools where I have to observe always used to say this to her kindergartners. Love it! I am saving this for my own class so I can print it out to hang on our wall. THankS!!!
Love this one! It has been a saying in our whole extended family for many years — the little kids all say it to each other!
Love it! I use this one a LOT in my Girl Scout Brownie meetings and it works wonders
Thanks for sharing!
HI Becky,
I love this saying, we even say it here is Australia.
We do however say it with a different word, we say “you get what you get and you don’t get unset”
I find that my children sometimes say it back to me.
Have a great day and I love the new colour.
So good for me today!
thanks – and I love the color change!
Ha! You know I’m replacing the ink right away in my printer just so I can print this. LOVE IT! I didn’t first hear this saying till my kids brought it home from school. Now we say it just because it’s fun to say….though, I do have some pick kids.
One of the teachers at my school says you get what you get and you say thank you…I love it. I use your saying all the time though.
I love this! I am constantly telling my kids this and recently heard them repeat it to each other;). Thanks so much for the uplifting encouragement. I feel that I’ve been throwing some *pity parties* for myself lately and just need to remember that this is life. We don’t always get what we want. And the better I learn to handle this, the better my kids will too. Thanks for the great print. I’ll be printing one for sure.
We have a similar saying in our house ‘you get what you get and you don’t get upset’! My husband and his sister used to have the ‘you pour – I choose’ rule when getting drinks etc..No more ‘he’s got more than me’, it had never been so even!
Well for all the southern friends that read your blog, we say, “You get what you get and you don’t pitch a fit” My son said his teacher said it last year in his kindergarten class and we use it at home too. Maybe you could do one just for us southern friends so I could print them out and give them to teachers at his school
If not, I know they’ll love these too. Thanks Becky for all that you share!
We say the same thing, just a little different; You get what you get and you don’t get upset! Love it!
You must have read my mind!!!!!!! We say this ALL THE TIME in our house and I’m so sick of sayin’ it! Now, I can just point to the sign…;)
Thank you!!!!
Ah yes..this is a daily phrase here too.
Also zip it, lock it, put it in your pocket. Usually when they won’t be quiet enough to listen!
Yup! Love that phrase! We say “don’t get upset” here in the Northeast.
very, very apt for this moment, right now!! We’re under voluntary admin here at work so this will go on my desk. Thanks!
Love it! How about some more details on the first picture? The frame and pins are adorable!
LOVE THIS! I teach kindergarten and it is our mantra whenever we do projects. Definitely getting this freebie! Thanks Becky…and I love the new color scheme. Yay Spring!
We actually use this saying at the preschool I work at….whether it is for food, colored paper, color of skittles, crayons….whatever ever…this is what we tell the kids
But it does work with us sometimes to
I love it! And I love that you design these fun freebies for us. Do you take requests? How about something related to “new life” and “springtime” etc? And, maybe by Saturday?
I’m helping to host a baby shower then, and something like that would make a great party favor for everyone.
Thanks again!
Thanks for the freebie. Being Australian I’ve never heard that saying before but will definately be using it now.
I work with a bunch of spoiled analysts who want everything handed to them…I use the phrase “you get what you get and you don’t get upset” all the time. I’m sure some think it’s funny and the rest just want to punch me. LOL
My 4-year old hears it too from time to time!
Thanks for making it into “art”. I love it
Amy
I love this but confess I’ve never heard it before! (And I’m from Texas…) My kids are grown and I have two precious grandbabies (18 months and 11 months). I’m going to have to download and print out so that I can remember it!
Thanks so much for the Freebie!!
I love a fresh coat of paint and I DID notice when I popped in just now! Great saying, indeed.
Thank you I will be posting it in my classroom – my first graders know this well. They actually say it more than I do! Thanks Becky!
I learned this saying from some of my Kindergarten students years ago. They had learned in Preschool. I love it! It covers about everything.
oh my goodness, this is so what i needed today, i have spent the day complaining that my job is not what i wanted but i have committed to 6 months so that’s what it is till September, so instead of whinging that it is beneath me i have to remember that i have been unemployed for 5 months and i am getting paid a whole lot of money to make coffee, so i am going to be the best coffee girl for the next 6 months and smile graciously whenever i get asked to clean up after one of the engineers LOL
thanks so much for the wake up call you made me realise how selfish i am being and wonder what i am missing out on by being so self important, i am feeling a little ashamed of myself
I did notice the change in colors and it’s so sunny and nice, even if the weather doesn’t reflect it. : ) I love your kitchen saying – I used to tell my kids “I’m not a short order cook so sit down and enjoy!”
LOVE the easel thing your big print is sitting on! Where do you find these? I’ve noticed several in your post over the past few months and I really like them. Thanks for the words of wisdom. I find myself saying these same words to my own kids frequently. I will have to print and post this in my own house!
PS–love the color change!
I need to plaster these signs all over the house!
Oh my, this fit my son’s today. Although it was around ‘eating’ food because they’ve never, ever, been picky eaters – thank you Lord! but it was around what part of dinner I asked them to help me prepare. One of my son’s got shredding lettuce and chopping up tomatoes; my other son got putting raw hamburger on corn tortillas – we are having tacos. My one son said ‘why did he have to – again – it wasn’t fair’. I think I’ll print this for my dining room/homeschool room for DISPLAY.
Many years ago, my mother-in-law needle point for me and had framed, ” This is the kitchen of Judy Webb I Reign Supreme If you don’t agree Starve ” It is still hanging in my kitchen today. My husband and I just celebrated 48 year anniversary.
yep, we use that line over here all the time!
we say “you get what you get and you’re happy about it!”
love the layout of your sign!!!
This is the same phrase my daughter’s Kindergarten teacher says when passing out treats and such.
Thanks Becky! So cute!
So funny! In our house it’s “You get what you get and you don’t get upset!”
Would it be bad of me to put one of these framed in each room of my house?
Haha…I teach 1st grade and one of my students taught me this phrase. Now I use it ALL the time at both home and the classroom. One of my favorites…along with ‘easy peasy lemon squeezy”!
The rest of that saying in our house is “If you throw a fit, you won’t get a bit!”
We have also had this saying within our family since our kiddos were young. We always say: “You get what you get, and don’t throw a fit; just be happy.”
Thanks for the printout!
it’s funny to see this quote again! we always say this in our house too. I really need to print out to remind our youngest. =)
The first time I heard this was when my oldest was in 1st grade–I might need to have this posted in every room of our house.
I am featuring this idea on my Idea List tomorrow.
I must know — how long have you been saying this to your kids??? I’m just SO curious because most of my mom friends laugh when they hear me say it to my two kiddos because they’ve never heard it before. It has a nice ring to it though, huh? I swear my mom would say it when I was young. We use it so often at our house that now my girls even say it. Just had to smile when I saw your little poster. Going to have to print out a big sign for our house.
