Do you have wood furniture that may be showing some signs of wear and tear? Notice the scratchy-looking fine lines in this end table.
I am no expert with wood. But remember our friend John who did some custom wood-based projects in our home? (See some of his brilliant work that he did here and here and here.) Anyway, he is an expert with wood and we trust him. John recommended this product — Briwax. You can find it here in my Amazon favorites.
I realize some of you have probably heard of Briwax, but to some of you, this is new news. It’s cool stuff. It works. I like it. And with this Spring weather, I do recommend opening a window for ventilation. It has a strong (not bad; just potent) smell. Just sayin’.
Here’s the context of that end table by the way. It’s in our family room and usually has a pile of books on it, which of course I left off just so you could see the beautifully touched-up surface. : )
I know you guys like to inquire, so …
End table & leather sectional: both from furniture stores that are likely not even in business anymore.
Ottoman: Home Goods
Pillows: Home Goods, Target (just the yellow rosette one)
Lamp: Lamps Plus (on clearance quite a while ago)
Zebra print blanket: Target
Basket: Another Target find; holds various little scrapbooks from over the years
Side note: I have been wanting to paint the end tables for quite some time. I’m thinking distressed white. Just waiting one two things: time and bravery.

Absolutely distressed white would rock that table! I would so do that in a heartbeat. No need to be afraid…just a little sandpaper and white spray paint! Do it! Love the pillows.
when my kitchen island was painted (it’s black now used to be white), the painter put some waxy like primer on it first (it was peach color) and then painted it black, once the paint cured, they sanded the corners to make it look distressed. I wish I knew what it was but the waxy like primer made the distressing much easier and looks really good. :0)
Thanks Becky, I have several uses for this stuff. thanks for the tip. Love the pillows on your couch!
Good to know! I’d rather eat a bug than refinish furniture — using this wax would be much more pleasant that either
.
Blessings,
GG
Oops, can’t spell — meant ‘than either’, not ‘that either’ — dur!
Do you still love the plantation shutters on many of your windows? Thinking about them as we move into a new home… not sure if they’re cute dust collectors or super functional and cute.
Becky,
You read my mind! We had a solid cherry kitchen table that has many coats of polyurethane on it. Does a great job but after 5 years of everyday use, it needs redone. Problem is it is a 7 foot table that is actually attached to the wall and comes out like an island. The poly smells so bad and since the table is attached it can’t just be taken outside. So now I am wondering if this wax will do the trick. Will have to give it a try. I have never heard of it, so thanks for all the tips you give us!
thanks for the advice on the wood Becky, and I have been wondering about that yellow flower pillow!
I have been busy around my house bringing spring indoors using some of your ideas! Check them out here http://simplyharris.blogspot.com/2011/03/spring-is-here.html
Thanks for that tip, Becky! We have a few occasional pieces that have seen better days!!!
Your couch/sectional is very similar to mine. So, if anyone is interested…Bernhardt, “Marc” is a close second to yours and still in the stores!
Thanks for the tip Becky! Can you share what paint color you’ve used in your family room? Thanks!
I think the inside ‘squares’ of the table and the drawer would look awesome painted a punch of color with the rest of it distressed white.
paint the end tables!!!!!!!!! i love my painted amroire, and it took a lot of bravery!
I was so excited to see this post. I had used this years ago on an old piece my parents had given me and loved it! I couldn’t remember the name of it though. I immediately went to amazon and order 2 tins. Thanks!
My mom the interior decorator swears by Briwax. Her daughter forgot that there’s a Briwax tin in the DR hutch – a gift from mom since she knows I’d never get around to buying it.
DUH – now I need to wax my tables! Thanks for the reminder.
I’m gonna be nosey and ask… {because some times other people ask things like this right?!!} But in your last picture you have a tall yellow shelf in the back. What is that? Is it backed with a mirror? I have something that shape that I painted green + put contact paper on the back but am wanting to update it. So if you don’t mind, I’d love to see it!! Also, I am doing lots of new colors in my home. I know I want aqua + lime green in my house but I have yellow + orange also. Do you think it’s too much. For some reason I feel like I have to choose between yellow OR orange. Do I? I need some sort of a tip. I have been spray painting lots of white through out my house as well. Any advise would be wonderful! Thanks!!
Hi! This is great idea!
I will fallow!

Thanks for the tip Becky. I used to love painting and staining furniture. Now that I am older……..not so much.

Wow! The difference it makes is amazing!
Becky, I hear ya about the painting of furniture. I have been stock piling Good Will finds after seeing blogs how they re-purpose furniture. I love Miss Mustard Seed blog and thanks to her just spent GUlP $207.00 on this chalk paint(not chalk board paint) I can’t wait to get it and start playing around with transforming furniture. What do I have to lose heck the paint cost more than the furniture at this point.
I certainly enjoyed reading about your experience with Briwax. I have become a fan of The Briwax Guy’s blog: briwax.wordpress.com – and there are some good hints there about using Briwax – alone or over painted pieces. I think that your tables would look super painted — Briwax over the paint gives a soft, almost worn look! Keep up the good job on your blog.
