Modern Bird Studios creates personalized modern art from photography. Each piece is hand-painted on wood. They take a picture and break it down into abstract shapes that make up the form. They then use contrasting colors to create the painting, using a thick oak composite for the medium. They also offer pieces that combine wood & acrylic like this piece below. So cool.

You can check out the Modern Bird Studios website and get an idea of their unique style in the Portfolio. They are giving a very generous gift of a $200 gift certificate to one of my readers. Want a chance to win? You know the drill. Leave your first name, city, and state.

*** This post has been edited. I just learned that giveaways on facebook are not allowed. So instead of a week-long “facebook giveaway” the giveaways will happen right here on my blog. A huge thank-you to Jessica Turner who was thoughtful enough to let me know about the restrictions that I was not aware of. Lesson learned. Now I know. ***
…
Hello there!
Today we’re launching a big giveaway here on my blog. Every day this week I’ll announce a new giveaway and every day I’ll announce at least one randomly-selected winner. I do giveaways for two reasons: 1) It’s a fun way to share fun finds with you. 2) It’s a fun way to help other small businesses get a boost in their exposure.
Yay for win-wins.
…..
I’m pleased … no … I’m thrilled to kick off this week-long giveaway with something really special. Talented jewelry artist Angela Bannatyne has designed custom pieces especially for us Project Lifers! Presenting …
The Amber Edition:

And the Turquoise Edition:

And yes, there are even coordinating earrings:

…
Isn’t that just the coolest? She created these pieces based on the color pallets of the current 2011 editions of Project Life. Not only are they gorgeous, but when you wear them, you’re reminded of how awesome you are for cultivating a good life and recording it. ; )
…..
You can check out Angela’s Avenue {A} site and her etsy shop to see more. And this is the direct link to the Project Life inspired items in her shop. Super affordable and absolutely beautiful. Plus, she loves one-of-a-kind pieces so there will be slight variations as well. I suspect these will sell out fast so if they do, check back. Angela has more supplies on the way and will be making more available soon.
I bet you’d like a chance to win one of these gorgeous Project Life bracelet & earrings sets, wouldn’t you? Leave your first name, city, state, and which version you’d love to have — Amber or Turquoise. You’re always welcome to nominate someone too.
…..
A very special thank-you to Angela for creating Project Life inspired jewelry with my readers & customers in mind. That’s just the coolest thing and I so appreciate her sharing her talents with us.

Many of you are so over Winter and ready for Spring. Right? Here’s a little DIY project that will keep you cozy indoors and add a little bit of sunshine in your space. It’s a floral topiary and it is E-A-S-Y!

…
This was my inspiration. My talented friend Megan made these and they’re the perfect splash of color and texture in her home. Are your wheels spinning with ideas yet? As you can see, the concept is super versatile. Her flowers and my flowers are different. Her arrangements set right in the candlestick things and mine is a tall topiary. Very different bases. Completely different results. And yet the process is pretty much the same.

…
Basic supplies needed: styrofoam ball, flowers, hot glue gun (all found at your local craft store).

…
You’ll also need a pot or candlestick or some sort of base. I love shops like Home Goods, Ross, Marshall’s, TJ Maxx, etc. for great bargains on cool pieces. Target, WalMart, flea markets, yard sales … really, you can find something just about anywhere. You may even have something laying around your house that could use a fresh coat of paint.

…
Your silk flowers will likely have stems.

…
Step 1: Separate flowers from stems. This usually means just pulling them off.

…
Step 2: Put hot glue on the bottom of a flower.

…
Step 3: Press that flower into the styrofoam ball and hold it there for a few seconds to ensure it’s secure.
Tip: If your flowers have tips that stick out a little bit like mine did, push that into the styrofoam first so the little dent is already there. Then add the hot glue and press the flower into that indention.

…
Step 4: Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

…
Cover the entire ball except to leave part of the bottom uncovered. If you’re creating a piece like Megan’s, you could leave a larger section open to set in its base. If you’re making a topiary like mine, you’re only leaving a small space to insert a stick.

…
Step 5 for a topiary: Shove floral foam in your base.

…
Step 6: Insert your stick (I spray-painted mine silver) into the bottom of the ball.

…
Step 7: Finish filling in the gaps with your last flowers.

…
Step 8: Insert the topiary stick into the floral foam.
Tip: Cut the ends of your stick at an angle so that it’s easier to stick into both the floral foam as well as the styrofoam ball.

…
Step 9: Use some mossy grassy stuff … or whatever you want at the base. Hot glue helps keep it all in place.

…
Step 10: The finishing touch is to perhaps add a piece of fruit, or a few smaller pieces.

What I wouldn’t do for a Project Life type of book from our newlywed life. Sure, we have pictures and scrapbooks and I am so grateful for those. But we missed so much of the “little stuff” with our camera back then. It would be remarkable to have something similar of my parents’ younger life. And oh, to imagine what it would be like (!) to come across a book of my grandparents’ lives, not just about the trips and family portraits, but the little details in their world during the time they were, say … raising a young family just as we are today.
This is on my mind because I think of Jason & Kyra (our niece) — freshly married two months ago. They remind me a lot of what we were doing at that stage in our life. They’re both working, both in school, figuring out married life, figuring out how to cook for two, making all sorts of memories. This is a unique time for them. It’s the beginning of their life-long journey together.
I don’t want them to forget the little stuff. I want them to remember the details about their jobs — what they like & don’t like about working there. I want them to remember their favorite take-out food and what they do on dates and details around their first apartment. I want them to remember what classes they’re taking and what they do with their spare time and what they’re reading outside of school. I want them to remember the flirty texts they send each other and the preparations they’re making for the future.
So I gave Jason & Kyra Project Life before they got married. In fact, we’ve given Project Life to several newlywed couples lately. This is their story. And guess what? They’re really doing it.
My heart sings.

And not just because of all of Aunt Becky’s mini lectures about “If I knew then what I know now…”.
They really get it. They know that record-keeping like this is not only a fun project to do together, but they get how valuable this will become over the years. Jason & Kyra are ambitious enough to do the picture-a-day format (good for them!) but remember — Project Life doesn’t have to be used this way. So far they’re keeping up. They’re both contributing. They both add journaling. They both take pictures.

I’m seeing some emails and comments from readers that aren’t sure if Project Life is for them because they don’t have kids. Um. Now would be a good time to clarify: Project Life is for anyone that lives a life. Young or old. Kids or no kids. Newlywed or empty nesters. Homebodies or world travelers. Single or married. Male or female.
I’ll also mention this: I was scrapbooking for 9 or 10 year before our first child came along and I have oodles of scrapbooks filled with pre-kid pictures. It has always surprised me when I hear of people who think scrapbooking is just for moms. No, it’s not just for any one group of people. Scrapbooking is for anyone who wants to preserve their story with pictures & words.
As I step down from my soapbox, I want to leave you with a little tip from our newlyweds.
I asked Jason & Kyra what the trick is for them. How do they personally find success with their Project Life? First of all, they always have their camera on them. Kyra carries her little point & camera in her bag everywhere she goes and they both have built-in cameras in their phones. Sure, the quality isn’t always the best. But who cares? They’re capturing life.
And secondly, they keep up with their little journaling cards. So even if they only print pictures every week or every other week or so, they’re always caught up. Anyone who’s doing Project Life knows it takes only a minute or two to write a quick something on those little cards.
If I knew then what I know now, I would have thought of Project Life 15 years ago.

Today I’m pleased to announce yet another winner … our final winner of this week’s big giveaway. Congratulations to Jane Logan! Jane, email projectlife@beckyhiggins.com and we’ll hook you up with the Project Life edition of your choice. Jane wrote:
I am trying to cultivate a good life by reducing the debt in our lives and to live within our means so that we can give to those in need without having to worry about how it will effect our day to day household. No more credit cards, cash for all, and consciously thinking about where every cent is going. I am hoping this will change the way my children think about the riches bestowed upon them and not grow up with a bad case of affluenza. Thank you Becky for always inspiring. Who would think that a post about Justin Bieber would end up with comments like these!
…
You’re right, Jane. Who would have thought!? Again, thank you to everyone who commented on what it means to cultivate a good life. What an uplifting week it has been to read about so much goodness in you … and in the world.

This week we’ve been giving away Project Life to someone each day. Just because you’re all doing your best to cultivate a good life and record it. I love that.
Congratulations to our 4th winner this week, incredibly deserving of a happy dance today — Michelle! Don’t know your last name or where you live, but shoot me an email at projectlife@beckyhiggins.com and let me know which edition you’d like, Michelle. This is what she wrote:
In 2000 when my husband had an accident in our home, was in a coma for 3 months, and died 7 months later … so many people, some of whom I knew, and many who I did not know at all, came forward to lend a helping hand to my daughter, then 7 years old. The kindnesses shown to us were so varied. Some gave of their time — a meal, helped us financially, picked my daughter up at school when I was at the hospital, took turns sitting with my husband at the hospital if I couldn’t be there, held his hand, talked to him while he slept for 3 months, left little gift bags of goodies for my little girl at our front door just to brighten her day…
I knew then that should we survive our difficulties, financially and emotionally, that I would never live one day of my life without returing the kindness … to someone … friend, family, or even a stranger.
And so … for more than 10 years now … I have incorporated into each day of my life an act of kindness, giving of myself, my time, a kind deed, a listening ear, a pot of chicken soup if someone is ill, Christmas gifts left on a porch for a family that had a rough financial time, a phone call to someone who is truly alone, sad, troubled, buying lunch for the homeless man who lived on the bus stop bench in our town … etc. etc. … the list goes on and on.
For me there is no better feeling than giving of myself, regardless of how wonderful – or less than perfect – my own day may be. I smile when I look back on more than 10 years of daily acts of kindness, and am so glad that I made this promise to myself … to reach out to someone each day … and to cultivate my own good life. And also for providing my daugter an example – by my actions – of what it truly means to give of yourself, no matter how big or small the kindness may be.
I know that my husband smiles down us us from his place in heaven as he watches us live our lives each day … with appreciation for our own blessings as well as a conscious choice to reach out to one person each day. If i do the math quickly, even I am amazed to know that 10 years = 3650 days, which is equal to the number of times I have sent a little bit of kindness in the direction of another person.
To me … THIS is what living a good life is all about.
