Many of you know that (almost) every day I share a picture-of-the-day idea { POTD Idea } on facebook + twitter. If you aren’t on facebook or twitter, you can still see these ideas on the right side of my blog, where my very up-to-date facebook feed is visible to anyone and everyone.
The purpose? To inspire you in your quest to document everyday life.
The source of inspiration? You. Sometimes I share one of my own personal pictures, but most of the pictures I share come from readers like you. People who enjoy taking pictures. Experienced photographers, novice photographers. Some are teens. Some are elderly. Many are somewhere in between.
The result? Whether you’re documenting life with a picture every day or just want ideas for taking pictures you hadn’t already thought to take, thousands of people are being inspired. Many thanks to all who have submitted their ideas and allowed me to share them.
Want to share? I would love to see your POTD Idea(s)! And I might even select your photo as one that I share with the masses on facebook + twitter. So don’t be shy. Email one of your very best photographs (or two) to submissions@beckyhiggins.com. Cute pictures of your kids are nice but please keep in mind that I’m looking for inspiring ideas to document everyday life.
Here are a few of my own recents to get your wheels spinning.
I do not walk around the house barefoot. I’m usually wearing these because they’re THAT comfortable. Do you have a favorite pair of shoes? Or do you have “house slippers” or the pair of shoes always by the door that you slip on to get the mail? What about a favorite pair that belong to your spouse or child?
……
Claire’s letter to a cousin. Including a message in her exact words. Capture your child’s current style of art. And if they’re too young to write, do it for them. Word for word so you can “hear” their voice in the written word.
…..
Unloading groceries from the store – including a major stocking up on (not-so-healthy) cereals. Next time you’re at the store, snap a picture of your shopping card (love phone cameras!) or get a snapshot of all your groceries as you get them unloaded and put away. I promise we don’t eat cereal all day.
…..
What’s for dinner. Whether it’s a tried & true classic in your family or trying something new. In this case, it’s a new-to-us recipe for Mexican Chicken Salad, which you can find HERE.
…..
This is such a classic reminder of Crew’s little 2-year-old personality, which includes his obsession with putting the lens cap on the lens when I attempt to take his pictures.
How do you capture the personalities of loved ones?

YOUR soooo fun! Becky I love all you do:)
I know, every time I have all of our cereal lined up I think of Seinfield and Jerry’s cereal. We go through a lot of cereal too- and some not so healthy. That’s a whole lotta cereal you have there! I just put away all of my groceries but I’ll take a pic next time.
Hi Becky. I love that you give POTD Ideas. One thing that would be super awesome is if you would create a link at the top of your website, like the other ones that you have for Recipes, Products, Free Stuff, etc. that lists these as you come across them. Some weeks we are vacationing or have tons of family stuff going on so I don’t need any more reasons to take pictures (already have a hard time choosing that week) but then there are those happy carefree weeks that using a few POTD Ideas are so great. Having one place to go to get to an on-going list when we need some inspiration would be so helpful. What mom doesn’t need a designated spot where they can find specific, useful information!
Thank you for all you do to keep us documenting!!!
Brilliant! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this idea. Pretty please & thank you if you add this! Would love to have a one-stop link for all the fun POTD ideas with visuals. I often see a good idea during a busy time when I have plenty to photograph, and then I hit a lull and need ideas and don’t remember when/where I saw it!
ohhh I’d love that too Becky and/or a POTD folder on your facebook page that has all the your/reader’s great photo ideas !
Thanks for all your hard work and wonderful creations !
I second or third or fourth or – whatever this idea! Brilliant!
Please oh pretty please with sugar on top?? I’ll be good; I’ll clean my room and make my bed without having to be reminded. Really, I will. I pinky-swear promise.
P–l–e–a—-s–s–s—e?!
Whatever happened to Raisin Bran, Becky?
Thanks for all the inspiration. I’m doing the project Life this year (it’s the first time) because we’re expecting our fourth child in July and I want to document the time before and after the little one arrives in our family. I’m also planning to do the Project Life only for the baby, to document his/hers first year. I have some ideas to photographs I can take of the little one, but would love to find a lot of photoideas for my Baby’s Life Project in one place. Do you have any good ideas or blogs/links to share for “A Baby’s Life Project?”
I seriously want to pull out my camera now. Any advice for a printer so these pictures don’t remain on my computer for the rest of time…or until my computer has a melt-down?
I did the math several years ago, and decided that home printing wasn’t the most cost effective method. Rather pricey, in fact. Photos with lots of color = lots of ink = what do you mean the cartridge is empty AGAIN?
I’m a fan of instant gratification – or ASAP at minimum so I upload to Snapfish, order and pick up my prints at Walgreen’s about an hour later. With Snapfish I pay $0.09 per 4 x 6 if I have them mailed to me.
There are other online options, with mail delivery or pick up. But I’m not familiar with others.
I LOVE Claire’s painted nails every time I see them! So cute! Does mama do that for her? That would be a POTD for sure!
Last year I started Project Life (POTD style) I only got through May 15 before I got derailed. I was just thinking this morning that I should start up and finish out THIS year since it is close to the same date I left off (and I’ve been horrible at taking pictures this year – so unlike me) But then I started thinking that at my stage in life anything I’m doing that is worthy of taking pictures, seems to be all about me (lunch with girlfriends, pedicure, shopping). My life is so NOT that way, but how many picture can you really have of driving kids around and doing homework? This post just reminded me that there is so much more, I need to think outside the box a little bit more. But if you’re feeling so inspired I would like more ideas about POTD for stay at home mom’s whose kids are all in school (ha, sounds like a dream come true right? really it just limits my time for laundry, bathroom cleaning and grocery shopping. once school is out I’m a slave to everyone else’s schedule)
clothes – clean in the basket, hanging in the closet, scattered on the floor {oops, that’s my children’s rooms}, dumped in the basket, in the washer and/or dryer if you have glass fronts, underwear and socks tossed wherever you sort them
dishes – piled in the sink, table set before eating, clean in the drying rack or dishwasher, in cabinet
other kitchen stuff – in cabinets, drawers, utensils, appliances being used {I did the sequence of making waffles}
food – in the cabinet or pantry or bags or refrigerator or freezer, ingredients gathered for a recipe & the finished dish, on table ready to be served or on plates – whatever you do
before & after – dust, clutter, beds
your home decor – broad shots of walls/rooms, close up shots of the four vases in the corner or …, your kids’ backpacks, shoes, etc, the clock you often check so you know when the kids will fly through the door – at the time they get home, that spot in your house that really shows the travel of the sun during the day and through the seasons
the collection of remote controls, or electronic devices – phones, MP3 players, cameras, etc
HTH
A huge smile crossed my face when I saw your Reef flops!
I wear my brown pair each and every day around the house.
Can’t wait to get a new pair this summer.
I love the POTD feature! How did you get your FB stream added to your blog? I love this idea. I have been taking at least a photo a day for a while and posting to my facebook. I would love to marry the stream to my blog. Thanks so much for all you do!
YOUR soooo fun! Becky I love all you do:)
Good photo!
Brilliant idea:)
What’s a shopping card?
I’m going to guess that you are not in the US and your home location isn’t into the reward system.
I didn’t even notice the typo. I think Becky meant ‘cart’ – take a photo of the shopping cart filled with your purchases before you empty them onto the belt at the checkout.
A shopping CARD is another thing altogether. Stores – all of them, it seems – have reward programs. You get a card with a unique number on it – very similar to a credit card – for each chain store you visit frequently. When you make purchases, the card is scanned. Your purchases earn rewards – which differ by chain. Some stores total your spending in a month and give you ‘their store brand money’ to spend on future purchases. Some give you a percentage off one total future purchase. There are so many different ways!
In exchange, they get your personal shopping pattern for their store [particularly at the grocery stores!] And the expectation is that you will buy most of your groceries at Store ABX, for example, because you have Store ABX’ reward card.
Crew and my boy Cody would get on well, Cody does that or puts his hand up so I can’t get his photo, I need to sneak photos of him at times hehe…..love all your photos, very inspiring
I love coming here for ideas on POTD, you always have fun ideas. I also have my favorite slippers that get worn till they have holes in them, usually right around the time it warms up for summer and I don’t need them.
For those of you looking for my ideas check out the Big Picture Scrapbook blog that has a community of PL and tons of ideas. I go there all the time now and always find something new to talk about and to take pictures of. Good luck.
I don’t usually comment. Thanks for adding the tiny details in life. I, too take pictures of almost anything about my day. I work full time outside of my home, so when I get home, I just pick up my camera and snap. In looking through my images, I have pictures, of my dinner(salad), my pedicure, my son brushing his teeth, a new sunglass case, mail for the day, books on my nightstand, books on my daughters nightstand, sons basketball jersey, hubby cutting the grass, new bloom on my daylilies- ALL sorts of things.
So…Becky…are your sandals the reef seaside sandal? They look so comfy for around the house! Thanks!
