We visited Washington D.C. a week ago today. Spent a full day there. On a sweltering hot & humid day. I remember humidity. I lived in this climate for 17 years + 4 more when we lived in Cleveland. It’s not hard to forget. But man — coming from the desert into that wet air on a nearly 100-degree day? Super awesome.
Not.
After we got through the initial shock (in other words, the whining) and found some air-conditioning, it really was a great day. We caught the morning train right in Brunswick. (Did I ever tell you that my hometown high school mascot is the Brunswick Railroaders?) Once we were in the city, the Metro got us to the Mall and then it was on foot from there.
We were in really, really good company. Lots of people were there to see the Lincoln Memorial. Hot + humid … and crowded? Plus whining kiddos? We were off to an … entertaining start.
This is part of the beautiful WWII memorial.
…..
Of course the Washington Monument is beautiful, particularly as it is surrounded by U.S. flags. But this also became our first landmark of air-conditioning! So now we love it even more.

Glad your family made to that place.. important part of our life for sure.
Love snapshots you took!
awwhh, I’m so glad you enjoyed a visit to MY hometown! I loved your photos and thanks for reminding me of the heat & humidity.
Your photos make me want to head down to DC to play tourist…something I haven’t done in years.
Your creativity of where you placed your logo on your pictures is cracking me up! Love the DC pictures. Reminds me of a wonderful vaction we took there one year. Thanks for the laughs and memory joggers!
I love how your logo is like playing “Where’s Waldo!”
I’ve had to travel to DC two years in a row now for business and I absolutely love it every time I’m there. The Metro is the best way to get around, besides on foot of course. I am now using the 2010 PL kit to put all my pictures from those two trips together and I’m having a blast doing it. Love your photos and love your take on some of the things you saw. I think we forget what an amazing place our nation’s capitol truly is! Thanks for sharing!!!
What lens/lenses did you use for the DC photos?
My hubby and I are spending a few days in DC next month. I’m soooo excited that I can’t stop planning and we’re only going to be there for 2 and a half days! (I haven’t been since I was 8 and there is so much I want to see and do!) Love your pics, such great shots! And I was actually going to ask the same thing that Jack did – any suggestions on lenses/ settings for some of the shots you took?
Great pictures! I had fun finding your logo – kinda like where’s waldo.
So glad I’m not the only one who has fun finding Becky’s logo on the picture. I had to really look carefully to find it on Abe’s thumb.
Yay for family time!
The logo is making me smile too! Before I even look at the photo- I was looking for the logo first lol
I got to go with my son and his class a couple of years ago. It was an awesome trip and one I highly recommend everyone take sometime in their life. I love your photos!
Now you are in my home away from home. Love the photos you have taken. We have never made it to the Washington Monument, now that I’ve seen your pics I can’t wait to go! Might wait ’til fall though.. :0)
You captured the beauty of the capitol in aall of it’s awesomeness. I grew up 20 minutes outside DC in Virginia and we only visted when we had company. Last month we drove home to see the grandparents and took the 3 kids to the museums and it was great seeing it thru their eyes.
Love the picture you captured of the Washington Monument and the Flag flying proudly. Beautiful! Even with hot, humid weather what a wonderful experience for your family. Washington DC is definitely on my [long] list of places I’d love to go.
Thanks for my laugh of the day. Good to note that we are not the only heat and humidity whiners (living smack dab in the midwest). Did your family climb the steps to the top of the Washington monument or take the elevator? Thanks for sharing your day with us.
i love the angle of the pictures you took…the blue sky is just gorgeous!!!
LOVE DC!!! Next time you get there make sure to stop into the Library of Congress. Recently got a huge makeover and it is stunning. Can’t wait for my next trip wit my son’s class!
Am I the only one who enjoyed playing “where’s Waldo” with your little Becky circle…I can’t think of the word for that. Trademark? Watermark? Postmark? Birthmark? I’m blanking…
I’m another one who is fortunate to live a mere hour and half from our nations capitol. Only an hour to the Metro station. It is truly one of my most favorite places to visit. We’ve been here less than a year so I’m sure it’s novelty at this point, but I always leave the district feeling very patriotic. I can’t imagine spending just one day and trying to really see everything. Thanks for visiting!
LOVE the photos! My daughter loved finding your logo hidden in each picture!!
Gotta love D.C.! I visit the area every chance I get. My favorite is the American History Museum where the “First Ladies Gallery” is featured. My newest favorite place is the Newseum. This museum of the news business is a must see in D.C. Great for kids of most ages.
Ahh…. the heat and humity. Last summer we also drove up to Gettysburg. We were unable to finish visiting the last few battlefield sites due to my kids being hot and tired. My daughter ordered me to leave and find the nearest Cracker Barrel. Thanks to GPS we found one in Maryland somewhere on our way back to D.C.
I hear that the reflecting pool is all torn out as they replace it. BUMMER, but still – what an amazing city.
DC is an amazing place. I love the pic of Abe, he was my favorite monument to see. You got a fabulous shot of him.
Keep the pictures coming – they are awesome to see!
Thanks!
Wonderful pics but especially like the one with the Washington Monument and the flag!!! so awesome!!!
One of my most favorite places. Yes, to going in Oct, Nov and early Spring!! Such an important place of children to visit.
Your photos are stunning! I especially love the one in the metro (it’s so bright), the one of the memorial (I’m not sure how you got it head on like that) and your perspective of the monument with the flag. They’re like postcards!
Thank you so much for sharing what you see through your lens, and for sharing your words as well. I’d love to hear more about your thought process as you compose or edit different photos if you’re ever inclined or have the time. Thanks again.
Love your pics! My oldest son (10) and I went in early April. I live in VA so humidity is nothing but a thing. My husband and I lived in Okinawa, Japan for 3 years, so we know it could be worse. Anyways, my son and I rode the train in from Richmond, It was AWESOME! I just have to tell you what he said when we went to the Smithsonian Natural History Museum. Quote: “Why are all these kids here, don’t they know this is my vacation, it’s way too many people here!”. I had to laugh!!!
I work in DC just a block from the White House (which is a little more scary, than cool since 9/11). The novelty has worn off for me, so we rarely go on the weekends….we should definately come more often & see the sights. It is super HOT and HUMID here – all my errands are run by 10am!
I just read your post. I don’t blame you for finishing your errands by 10am! In DC do people spend much time outside in hot weather?
Over here it people seem to go mad when it’s hot – last summer a baby was severely sunburnt on a beach in the heatwave. I can’t stand sitting on a beach in hot weather!
I suffer from summer SAD so it’s even worse for me!!! Roll on the autumn!!!
Beautiful pictures! WOW!!!
Hi,
It gets really hot & humid here in the UK in the summer too – I hate it. I get really ratty when it’s humid.
I really admire the Amish people. They are so devoted to their faith. I couldn’t live like that tho.
There was a programme on the telly over here about 4 Amish people who came to the uk & lived as a normal person. It was really interesting & I really admired them for standing up for what they believe in.
P.S. Sorry I’ve written really so much, I don’t know what other word to put!!!
Sorry, I just realised I posted about the Amish people in the wrong part!!!
I live in MD and we love going to Washington, you can never go too many times! Beautiful and a reminder of how grateful we are to live here, we are blessed in so many ways that others take for granted.
[...] trip back east, I wanted to share a few photos from our time spent with family. Our visits to Washington D.C. and Amish Country were quick. The majority of our time was spent with family. They are why we [...]
Would love to know what camera and lenses you used to take these amazing photos. Please share
How fun! I lived my whole life in the Phoenix area, until we moved to Pennsylvania 9 months ago. We must have been in DC the day just before you. I have some of the same pictures! Great place.
Great photos! My family (from Utah) was visiting grandparents in Virginia and just happened to be in D.C. the same day as your family! Definately hot and humid, but lots of fun!
