Yesterday’s post was plenty wordy. I’ll keep it very, very visual today. My friend Megan has been working on a photo gallery wall in their master bedroom and the results are just completely beautiful. Here’s a little inspiration for your day.
……….
Megan’s wall inspires me personally in 3 ways:
1. The family pictures are a combination of formal portraits and candid shots … taken with her iPhone. Yes, pictures from your phone can absolutely be framed on your wall. I so love that she included those.
2. The neutral colors of all the frames allow the photographs to really pop. (Indeed, spray-painting was involved.)
3. It’s DONE! An actual, real, completed project. The reason that inspires me is because I have many unfinished projects. For example — this lovely little stash of frames has been collecting in our upstairs hallway for a few weeks now. Okay, let’s get real. It’s been months. Many months. In fact, I’m not even sure how many months.
This is what’s currently on the wall. I love the pictures. They’re family classics. The pictures are couples of our heritage – both sets of parents and 4 sets of grandparents. Also adorning the wall (for months) is this magazine tear-out that inspires me. It’s what I’ve been thinking about doing on this wall for quite some time.
I tore it out from a Pottery Barn catalog.
I like my little collection of family pictures. But the wall is quite large and my current collage is small. Too small-scale for the hallway – for sure. See what I mean?
But the pile of frames will sit a while longer. I have far too much going on right now. I have more cool products to develop for you! My priorities are straight. ; )
Okay, seriously – if anyone has a killer idea for this wall, PLEASE share a link. I’m in no hurry to complete the project and I’m completely open to other ideas, especially because a certain someone in this house isn’t convinced that photo collages are his thing. So … a grid? Perhaps 3 giant vertical posters? I don’t know.
……….
And just like that, I got wordy with a post that was supposed to be purely visual.
……….
Thank you Megan for sharing your inspiring wall with us! I have a feeling a few more photo gallery walls are going to be popping up. If you want to share your photo gallery wall with me, email submissions@beckyhiggins.com. I would love to see!

A friend of mine is creating a “family tree” on her wall….many generations all in black frames of some kind or other but all black.
I keep seeing vinyl wall decals of trees and thinking this would be a really cool idea to add family photos in frames on top of the decal.
Your friends wall of piccies is stunning, thanks for sharing!
Here’s my favorite site for inspiration:

I like how the gallery wall wraps around the wall beside the table. You could do that, too.
I had this bookmarked for inspiration: Wall Art Wednesday
http://laurawinslowphotography.com/blog/category/products/wall-art-wednesday/
Not sure if this link will work, but my friend Amy has done this in her home and I have always loved it. She nail gunned everything to the wall, even the frames, to keep anything from shifting, as it is a high traffic area in the house.

I am passionate about picture walls! I think having family memories on the walls (especially candids!) are a great way to remind your family of the love, fun and laughter you share everyday! And I think having pictures of happy times on the walls strengthens my resolve during hard times and reminds me of what is really important in life (especially when I might be tempted to lose my temper or get frustrated — that smiling picture from baseball in the park helps put life in perspective
Good luck!
I could talk all day about the subject and I can’t wait to see your wall when it’s done! If you want some more inspiration you can follow my pinterest board just for photography wall art: http://pinterest.com/marciej/photography-wall-art/ I’m trying to collect lots of different styles so I can share them with my clients and help them create their own
I’m planning something similar soon. My inspiration is the hallway that the family on http://www.younghouselove.com did. I want all the frames, and other things to be white. I will be including kid’s art, color photos, black and white photos, plates, a map, a home crafted monogram, a stamped up canvas that I shared on my blog…all kinds of things. I’m hoping the white frames will tie it all together. As for the shape of how to arrange things? I’m gonna wing it! I have allready spray painted some frames so they will fit into the theme. Good luck.
Thanks for the inspiration Becky… I love doing photo walls and am changing up mine soon. Great ideas!!
Becky,
Thanks for sharing your “unfinished wall project.” Too often we see beautiful, completed projects online and think someone’s life is perfect or so together at all times. It’s inspiring to know that someone like you has an unfinished project like so many of us. Thank you for being forthcoming – much appreciated! I’m sure I speak for everyone when I express my interest in seeing the completed wall – I’m sure it will be wonderful!
Your friend’s wall is absolutely stunning – so in keeping with the room’s personality! It looks like it should be on Apartment Therapy’s website!
Thanks for all the time you spend sharing your thoughts and projects. Very inspirational and a bright spot in my day!
I pinned this on Pinterest a while back. I don’t have a wall big enough but still think it is cool!http://pinterest.com/pin/191348555/
I had literally been procrastinating with my hallway gallery wall since we moved into our home 6 years ago. Finally decided to just DO IT already. So glad I did because it’s now one of my favorite things in our home. I did purchase all new frames (Hobby Lobby 50% off rocks), and ended up spray painting a few black so they would all match. I also highly recommend the Command Adhesive strips. It was pricey, but oh so worth it not to have to measure exactly (all my frames touch, so it would have been a nightmare to hang them all). Here’s a public link to my facebook album if you’d like a look: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150302474312342.364419.623517341&l=301c2a232b&type=1
I really like this idea
http://www.marthastewart.com/photogallery/fresh-start-decorating-with-photographs#
with a visual straight line….it would be easier for me to pull together and still have the “gallery wall” feel to it. Maybe your husband would like it more too
Maybe a few larger photos (one of each child perhaps?) clustered with smaller photos around them?
I have been inspired by custom photo wallpaper on 2 separate episodes of HGTV Home by Novogratz. In the following link, you see 2 examples- a busy wall with model headshots, and a kid’s room with huge photos of triplets. I think that somewhere in the middle of the two might be perfect for that wall of yours. http://blog.hgtv.com/design/author/cnovogratz/
Becky,
I had to smile seeing your photo of the frames on your hall floor. We have had a few bouts of things sitting on floors for some time after we moved (up to a year for some!) until we had either the inspiration or energy to put them up. My husband started calling the piles of frames our “floor art”. It has now become a joke between us. “Is that going on the wall or is it becoming our new floor art?”
I hope that you will find the right look for your hall that will make you happy. Until then, enjoy your floor art!
@ Pam S.
I love your creative phrase….”floor art”…..perfect!
Housekeeping question : What is your solution to keeping the flat surface of the hallway table clutter free? If I put anything flat and open in a pathway, it collects keys, hats, gloves, legos – ect . . .
My solution is to NEVER, NEVER let anything extra be on that flat surface. We are five adults living in a teeny tiny house and I do not have clutter on any open surfaces. The second something hits the counter, table whatever it is removed. I just put it the bedroom of the person it belongs to. Every.Single. Time. It is tedious initially but people eventually get the message. Tossing clutter works too. Or a bin out of sight that you can toss things into. When someone comes back looking for their stuff they have to go through the bin to find it. At the end of the week or month toss any left overs. If something is lost it is a good reinforcement not to leave stuff lying around. A friend used to vaccum up any Lego lying around. Her children had no idea she went back later and retrieved the `vanished’ bits. They thought it was gone and were very quick to pick up next time they were asked
Consequences are essential or no one will change their ways.
I’m so LOVING this – this has been in my brain – I see it in my mind all the time. I am in the process with the frames on the floor and pictures to be printed. Thanks always for the flame of inspiration!
I love this idea on Mandy Douglass’s wall….http://mandydouglass.blogspot.com/2011/09/studio-5-capturing-growth-moments.html
You need the take a look at April Foster’s Blog, she redid her home and it’s amazing. There’s one wall the she did with photos.
http://aprilfoster.blogspot.com/2011/04/our-house.html
Have you seen those cool frames around the thermostat? Very cool and then you could put frames and pics up the whole wall…
@ Erin:
Do you have a source/website for the thermostat frames? I haven’t seen them and it sounds interesting. THX!
I totally love the vinyl wall art. There are so many possibilities. Last year I saw Nichol Magouirk use her Silhouette to make a wall decor and I absolutely loved it. She made it with fuzzy vinyl ans regular vinyl. A cute bird on a branch. So adorable. She also used words to put above her framed pictures. Just loved it all.
Good luck with the wall and with your “certain someone”
Sandra
Hi Becky I’m sure you’ve heard of Pinterest I love that you can keep your photo links organized and available at a glance. There is tons of inspiration all in one place on that site. Gotta love it.
Here is mine for photo wall display
http://pinterest.com/paolanorman/photo-display-art-display/
I am crazy for canvas prints right now. We ordered ours from Sam’s Club, but I know Costco and other local places are less expensive than online places I’ve looked. They have gallery wrap-around style canvas photos and we’ve done some candid shots and some from our professional photo shoot (that we won thanks to your giveaway!!) LOVE them!!
great link for a wall of frames: http://www.younghouselove.com/2011/04/its-done-and-we-heart-it/
I also love what Centsational Girl did with this hallway to get more function: http://www.centsationalgirl.com/2011/01/style-storage-a-bare-wall-transformed/
Happy Home Decorating!
Megan did a beautiful job…I love:) Welllllllll tell that someone that is a awesome wall to do a wall gallery. A mix of snapshots you dearly love of your kids, and maybee some professional in the mix. With maybee a word (large) that would go with the theme. LIKE maybee “family” or “inspiration” or “love”.
Another great idea is …I have a friend (with a new baby). She had someone paint (YEP right on the wall) a large tree, and within each branch is the whole family…one side of the tree is her family and other side is her husband. They traised back as far as they knew the names of all. The wall is red, with a tree trunk in brown, and the tree actually is white. Color is ALL your option I believe. But Becky can you visualize or what…I sure can!!!
OH gotta say I LOVE pottery barn, their frames, and picture wall ideas are the best!!! I actually did a picture wall with shelves from Ikea (as I could not swing the price of Pottery Barn Ledges) using three total. That looks pretty yummy too, and if you like a more organized…cleaner look you certainly get that with the ledges. Good Luck,,, and please show when you decide:)
Every day this month Kristen Duke has a different blogger share how they decorate with photos. Tons of great ideas being shared. http://kristendukephotography.com/
I also had a large wall to decorate and doing a picture wall wasn’t really an option…
I did this: http://dreamincolor.typepad.com/dreamincolor/2011/09/one-more-for-home-decor.html
I am hooked on Pinterest.com And recently a friend of mine said she was going to create a “done” board because there are so many ideas and she wants to prove that she actually follows through and finishes at least some of her inspiration ideas. Love that!
I think you should check out kristendukephotography.com – she is dedicating this whole month to decorating with pictures. lots of ideas there
I have a Project Life question/problem…what is your advice to people who stopped taking pics/journaling about April…I don’t have enough photos to even spill all the spaces…do I fill the emptiness with cute paper and embellishments and just move on? I am so disappointed in myself…last time I did 365 I took a picture a day and was so proud/happy when I completed. Now…it’s just another incomplete project staring me in the face. so sad! Do you have any advice/suggestions to help? Thanks for your time Becky!
I love photo walls. I’ve been collecting ideas on pinterest for a while now. I had been thinking about it for a large wall in our family room with high ceilings. Instead, in that spot, I think I’m going to do 3 vertical rectangles made out of moulding and then paint the inside a coordinating color from the rest of the wall and then put a framed photo in each of them; keeping clean lines in an otherwise full room. I think my photo wall will end up in my staircase. Just an idea to consider
but i do think a photo wall would be perfect too.
It is comforting to know that I am not the only person with blank walls!!! I have wanted to do several wall photo colleges similar to the one featured today…but alas with lots going on it is on the back burner. Like the idea of just collecting frames, photos, and putting up a pic of the idea of how it will look when completed for inspiration is a great idea too. Thanks for sharing. : ))
I too would be interested in the ideas especially how to work around the temperature control box. My box is also in the middle of the wall. I find it makes the wall options limited.

Let’s hope someone chimes in on this one, Veronica!

I’m in LOVE! I can totally relate to the unfinished project too. I really love the frame within a frame look. Very creative and well done!
