This is my husband a “few” years ago. I know. Sooooo cute, right?
When David and I were newly married and in college, I worked as a receptionist on campus. I thought I was doing a great job but my manager made me feel otherwise. I felt defeated and frustrated and I realized this job affected how I felt about everything else. David was instrumental in helping me realize that simply getting out of that job and changing to something entirely different – something that I would truly enjoy – is what was necessary.
I quit. I found another job working for a family in the next town over as their “Mother’s Helper”. It was as fun as it sounds. I loved my job. I loved the Evensens. I loved how I felt about what I was doing. My attitude about everything changed – like magic. And – without this job I would have probably never met Lisa Bearnson, who invited me to join Creating Keepsakes magazine, which started everything for me.
Fast-forward.
A little over two years ago I was at a crossroads with my work again. Except it was different this time. I accidentally developed an actual career out of a hobby – and I loved my job. But in the evolution of my style and approach and practicality, I no longer felt like I had a place in contributing to a magazine that focused on the artistic side of scrapbooking. My passion was shifting.
David, once again, was instrumental in helping me through a significant transition. I resigned. Together we then decided that I would take my passion for creating solution-based products – and we would launch our company. We had a vision. He supported my passion. I honestly don’t know that I would have taken such a big leap without his support.
I know some of you know this, but in case you don’t – my husband is very involved in making our company what it is. I am the one you see all the time (too much, probably). But David deals with a lot of logistics, financials, and other behind-the-scenes stuff that’s pretty much essential for making things happen. And – the man has ideas. No, he’s not a scrapbooker. His career is in medicine. But when we put our heads together and listen to your feedback – magic happens.
Today is David’s birthday. If you feel inclined to leave him a note, go right ahead. He doesn’t love the spotlight and may even give me grief for blogging about him. But seriously – without him, Project Life may have never happened. For real. And PS – He actually came up with that name. Project Life.

It is nice to hear that there are other men out there like my husband, who instead of belittling or making light of their wives passions or interest they are actually supportive. My husband introduced me to scrap booking one day in the craft store, while perusing the Paper aisle we were looking at examples, my husband said, “Hey, you have taken so many photos, why not do something like this?” He grabbed a shopping cart, an employee and said “My wife wants to do this, what does she need to start?” When we go to the crafts stores so many women comment on how lucky I am to have a husband that will share my interests, so on Sundays when he is watching Football, I will watch with him to show him support with his passion

I just love the products your company makes. Me being a super busy medical student (I’m sure you can remember those days) it’s soo hard and sometimes makes me sad that I can’t scrapbook and do crafts as much as I use to before starting med school. But with products like Project Life, I can still do those things. I finally gave in and will be purchasing the Colbalt Collection when it comes out. I ordered everything else. I am super excited to begin documenting my life and journey in medical school. So the past few days God has been sprinkling my days with the peace that IT will all work out. It has been in blogs that I read, people I talk to, old friends coming back into my life reminding me things, songs, radio… the list goes on. God is so GOOD!

One of my favourite things about reading your blog, Becky, is reading you talk about your husband and family. You clearly love each other very honestly, deeply and authentically – something unfortunately few and far between these days. Also few and far between is a husband who is willing to ‘allow’ his wife to not only take risks with her career and business – but to join her on that journey. I know far too many women in relationships where it is ok for the man to take risks and follow his dreams, but the woman is expected to sit docilely by because the husband doesn’t think her dream is ‘viable.’ Thank you for showing me that great men still exist in the world, who cultivate good lives and love and cherish their families.

So few have values these days and it is sad to see that. It almost seems like a rarity versus the norm these days. People don’t cherish their families and feel that support and being a team is important. Our children lean from these role models and your children will learn from both parents that it is okay to take risks and support your partner and do what makes you happy!
Becky’s blog provides us many aspects of this and it sometimes is a tool to teach us as well.

I’ve realized that when going through transitions in life, we are most vulnerable to that new environment and new way of doing things. What a blessing to have a spouse that sees in us, what we have not yet ventured to see in ourselves and provide a foundation of support for that to grow.
