It’s Friday. As in Feedback Friday. Except that my Friday … and my Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday have been a little crazy. So this week I will be sharing lots of feedback + answering your questions – tomorrow. I don’t usually post on weekends but hey. Rolling with the punches here.
…..
So today you get the next video in my 12 Videos of Christmas series! Say hello to adorable Ada in Spreckels, California who teaches us her bow-making tips.
Ada says, I learned how to make these bows years ago … and they are SO easy! Whenever I wrap something up I am asked how to do it. It’s not easy to explain, but very easy to show. That’s why I made the video. I wish I had more time because I love blogging & all the things I get from other peoples lives. I don’t do it nearly enough. I’ve been following Becky’s for years … like before Claire!
First of all – real quick. Notice the new navigation bar at the top? If not, refresh. Ahh, there we go. Much better now. : )

Paint? Yes – we’re having a paint giveaway. I don’t know about you, but I have a few pieces of furniture that are ready for a little update. I’m actually planning to embark on a little painting project sometime during the Christmas break … I hope. That darn “spare time” keeps running away from me but the ideas are so in my head. : )

3. photo books on Shutterfly.com (coming just before Christmas)
Let’s talk about #2 for a minute.
Today’s video is a short + sweet instructional video that shows you step-by-step how to add text to one of our Project Life Journaling Cards that you can get on JessicaSprauge.com. In order to use the digital elements, one really should have some basic understanding of Photoshop Elements (or other photo editing software). That said, I know many of you are really unfamiliar with Photoshop and yet you’re intrigued with our digital products and would like to learn more. That’s super.
My hope with this video is that you’ll see how easy it really can be. Of course there is sooo much one can learn and JessicaSprague.com offers a plethora of classes to guide and teach and inspire. If you want to start small and simple and just test the waters of the digital world, sign up for Up + Running with Photoshop, which is a beginner class that I’m actually going to be taking myself (and it’s on sale right now!).
In the meantime – enjoy this little tutorial.
Many thanks to my very own brother Kevin who put this video demo together for us. He pretty much rocks.
…..
By the way, have you heard? Based on popular demand, we now offer full LAYOUT TEMPLATES for Digital Project Life!! They are available as a set of templates, as well as individually.
Here are some sample pages using the Layout Templates with the digital Project Life elements:
Of all the video submissions I got, this is clearly the most “experienced” quality. Eric Raum has a gift – seriously mad talent – for making fantastic videos. He currently lives in Afghanistan and works for the USO to help boost the morale of our troops overseas. Check out how he documented a little piece of his adventures overseas.
Eric used a Panasonic GH1 and GF1 and edited the video with Final Cut Pro.
…..
You have to read his email to understand the context of this video:
I moved overseas with a promise to myself that I would stay until I could come home having traveled to the places I’d dreamt about as a child. Two years later, having discovered for the first time what it really means to love someone (an ongoing discovery), that promise changed significantly, for the better. Eliza and I attended college together and over a period of lengthy letters back and forth sparked by a random hello years later, I realized that I’d better not let her pass me by again, regardless of the distance.
Still having another year and a half to complete my work here in Afghanistan, those dreams of seeing the world took on a whole new light. Together, we decided to make the most of this time and instead of my coming home to the US, we would meet up once every three months in a place that we’d both wanted to see but never thought we could.
It has been an incredible journey so far, to learn about each other, other cultures, and ourselves; To find out what it means to be a team in a distant land, to work through the initial stages of a relationship while in a desert on horseback, or even worse, driving through Jordan! I am blessed this Christmas to know that I have found someone who will stand beside me, encourage me, and most of all, put up with those three month absences!
I hope that this can inspire others to explore, whether it be a far away land or their own home town. To see things from a different perspective and to take another look at that boyfriend, girlfriend, husband or wife this Christmas and find an adventure of their own! And if nothing else, I hope at the very least it may entertain!
…..
Eric has made many other videos and it just felt appropriate to share one other that he did. He said, I believe with great conviction in the importance of taking care of our troops over here. Whatever side of the fence one might fall on, these are our sons and daughters and they are a long, long way from the ones they love this Christmas. I did this in Iraq a couple years back, and the message still hits home in a major way this holiday season. I was looking through the rest of your blog and was truly encouraged to see your veterans day post!
Thank you, thank you, thank you Eric – for inspiring us on so many different levels.
Tis the season that yumminess is in abundance. I was really hoping someone would submit a video of them whipping up a little something in the kitchen and that’s just what sweet Jenalee did!
She wrote, “I love the way Becky shares more than just an amazing scrapbook product but how she shares her life and many ways to make our lives happy, inspiring, beautiful and creative. I love to make yummy treats during the holiday season. I thought, maybe I could take Becky’s challenge to create a video that would share one of my all time favorite simple recipes – White Chocolate Holiday Popcorn.”
Thank you for sharing this Jenalee. You did a great job breaking it down in easy-to-follow steps and I guarantee there are a lot of people who will be making White Chocolate Holiday Popcorn in the next few weeks.
Jenalee used a Full HD Panasonic HM-TA1 camera, and Premiere Elements 8 editing software to make her video.
Comments and questions are gathered from facebook, twitter, emails, and right here on the blog. It’s time for another edition of Feedback Friday!
……….
I noticed that a couple of your Photo Pocket Page designs have pocket openings on the side sometimes, instead of at the top where I expected. They’re wonderful and completely useable but I’m just wondering … is this on purpose?
Yes. Sort of. We originally designed everything to have openings at the top – always. But it’s not that simple. On a couple of the designs, because of the pocket configuration and the manufacturing machinery and the way things have to work logistically, a few openings are on the side instead. Like you said – it doesn’t change the usability and the function of the Photo Pocket Page.
…..
Do you do any other scrapbooking besides Project Life now? What about your childhood, your story, your ancestors, etc.?
Great question. (Gulp.) As much as my natural instincts are to feel guilty about what I’m not doing, I am far too realistic for that and guilt gets pushed to the side big-time. I am a documenter of life, an amateur photographer, a family historian. But that doesn’t mean I’m good at all of that, all of the time. It certainly doesn’t mean I have everything pulled together the way I’d like. Right now I’m focused on documenting the here + now of our family life with Project Life. I have also embarked on a journey called catching-up-with-my-kids’-books. And trust me, you’ll be hearing a lot about that soon since the journey has been documented with video. Other than that, no. Nothing else right now. Yes, I have childhood scrapbook pages and family history pages but it’s definitely not where I want it all to be. Yet.
Bottom line: There is a time and a season for everything. I totally have a vision for what I want to do with our family history stuff, and David’s and my childhood stuff. Another topic for another day. The vision is there. I’m just looking for some spare time.
…..
I am sure you have been asked this but have you ever considered catalog sales? I feel you have the most amazing products that could transform so many peoples lives as it has mine. I just think it would be so cool to see reps out there demonstrating how to use your products and inspiring others!
Yes, once upon a time it was a thought. But no – it’s not what we’re doing. Our business model keeps everything so simple. Our product is made and shipped to Amazon and anyone (in the U.S.) can purchase our products there and have it shipped directly to them. That is the simplest thing that we can do that is also very beneficial to the customer – you. Many of you are practically Project Life “consultants” because of the way you share it with friends and family. You have to know how much we appreciate that. Very, very cool.
…..
When is the Shutterfly version of Project Life going to be available?
Barely in time for Christmas.
…..
Will the Shutterfly/Project Life photo book be available in more than one size?
You bet. The “default” photo book sizes are 12×12 and 8×11 but you can convert your project to 8×8, 7×9, and even an itty bitty 5×7 gift size. I can’t wait for you to see these Project Life photo books!
…..
I wish I didn’t have to wait for other items to come in while some items are available now. It would be nice to get everything at the same time.
I hear ya. And I promise you that we’re not trying to stagger the availability of different products. Please keep in mind that there are so many behind-the-scenes logistics in manufacturing physical product that most people wouldn’t even think about, that affect the timing of products becoming available. Please also remember that this is our transitional year as far as product offering. When we started our company just over two years ago, we offered one SKU – one item. That’s it. Last year we offered 2 items. We now have 30 products and more in the making. So yeah – it’s a little tricky to keep everything on a predictable schedule. The beautiful thing about the way we’re offering product now is that we’re getting on track to keeping plenty of inventory in stock all the time – all year long. The few items that are currently sold out were re-ordered weeks ago and will be available again in January. As we move forward, we’ll be able to close that gap even more so that “sell outs” are very rare.
…..
I notice that the Photo Pocket Pages are not all the exact same total width. It’s subtle, but I’m just wondering why.
It’s all about the math. For the 4×6 and 3×4 cards to fit perfectly in every single pocket (which we really fine-tuned with all the new products) … each Photo Pocket Page is going to have to be a slightly different width. When you factor horizontal and vertical and different configurations … it is what it is. And those size variations are very, very subtle. The alternative is to have them all the exact same size, which would mean the cards and photos would not fit well in the pockets. They would be too tight or not have too much room, etc. Hope I’m making sense. It’s all about the math. This is the “fun” part of product design. ; )
…..
Where did you get the white chairs that I always see in your pictures and videos?
Stanley is the brand. Coastal Living is the line of furniture. The name of the chair is the Wayfarer Side Dining Chair. We had the seat cushions recovered with a faux shiny wipeable leather that I found at a local fabric store.
…..
I don’t know if anyone has ever mentioned it but I think it would be awesome to have a set of page protectors that fit the 4×4 Instagram photos.
Oh, trust me. That’s in the line-up. : )
…..
Can you please use month concepts when saying, for example, that the School Kits might be out by Summer 2012? Living in Australia, we are in summer now and I started getting overly excited!!
I’m so sorry that I wasn’t thinking of our friends in the Southern Hemisphere when I said that. We just aren’t close to having a date for the release of those products yet so I needed to keep it vague. I guess I could say we’re hoping for sometime between June – August 2012.
…..
What about the date stamp? Is it in the core kit?
Nope. We no longer have a date stamp as part of our products. This is easy to find online or at your local office supply store.
…..
Does anyone have any cute ideas/pictures for the very first page of their album? I love the cards with the kit but I want to make mine a little more personal, and I wast it to represent the whole year, anyone?
Excellent topic. I have a whole blog post about this in the works. If anyone wants to share their Project Life title page, please email a really good photograph to submissions@beckyhiggins.com for us to consider sharing with our other content.

Can I just say that I know it is not by chance that I happened upon your website several months ago? I was a huge fan of your work with CK, but lost touch with everything scrapbook-related for a while as my family went through some tough changes and I was running in “survival mode”. I believe that I have an actual part in my body that is connected to my current level of memory preservation, and most of the time this body part weighs a ton and is twisted in several knots due to my “guilt” and inability to keep up with all of the photos I take and memories we make. It literally weighs on me daily. Several months ago your name popped into my mind as I was on the computer and I was curious as to what you were up to. I got chills and tears in my eyes as I watched your Project Life video (“Project Life by Becky Higgins”) and thought, “Wow, this is going to be the thing that saves me!” I was giddy and excited as I showed everyone the video, and have been following every development of your products ever since. I’m hoping Santa has a few white boxes for me under the tree this Christmas!
The Andes Mint Cookies have been one of our family’s very favorite treats for quite some time. We love to share these with others. I know many of you hold the tradition of exchanging homemade goodies during the holiday season so I’m sharing a little peek at the cookie-making goodness, put to cheery Michael Buble’ music. For an even more festive variation of these cookies, check out the Peppermint Crumble Cookies. Stay tuned for another treat-making video submitted by a fellow reader, which will be featured this weekend.
Ladies and gentlemen … I am pleased to officially welcome the Cobalt Edition + Clementine Edition to the Project Life family! New products have arrived to Amazon for U.S. customers! (Remember: If you’re outside the U.S. please check with your Project Life distributor for an update on timing.)
The following 4 items are brand-new and have just arrived today. Click on any of them to take you directly to their respective listing on Amazon.
There are several images for each item on Amazon but for even more detailed shots of the new editions go HERE. For all the nitty-gritty about what comes in a Core Kit, go HERE.
Our Creative Team is already rocking + rolling with great inspiration. I love how they’re each using Project Life in their own, unique way. They are each so brilliant with how they each photograph their life + happenings + loved ones. Of course I love the end result – gorgeous and fun scrapbook pages that didn’t zap a lot of time out of their schedules.
NOTE: None of them have the new editions yet, but the same ideas apply across the board, no matter which edition you’re using. You will be inspired looking at their pages and pictures. (Yes, the Cobalt + Clementine Editions are coming this week – they’re almost here and I will let you know as soon as it shows up on Amazon.)
Oh – and did you hear? Since announcing that Ali Edwards and Loni Stevens joined the Creative Team, we have also welcomed Cathy Zielske as our most recent addition.
…..
Layout by Ali Edwards. Notice how she implemented art into one of the 3×4 pockets.
…..
Layout by Deb Duty. I love how she included smaller pictures on a bi-fold card (unfolded and placed in a 4×6 pocket here).
…..
Layout by Jennifer Woodbury. It’s so fun to see Design G put to good use. Vertical + horizontal pictures in one page protector! This 10×12 size is so great for in-between pages when you have a lot you’re documenting for one theme/event/occasion and therefore want to include several pages.
…..
Layout by Liz Tamanaha. I love how she utilized Design E to enlarge a couple favorite pictures and capture snippets of loving conversation they have with the girls. Four, large, square pockets = clean design + fun, dramatic effect. I really like the Design E Photo Pocket Page.
…..
Layout by Marcy Penner. Part of her fantastic, eclectic look is due to implementing a variety of products in the details. If you have a stash of scrapbooking/crafting products that you haven’t used in a while, add little touches in your Project Life album!
…..
Layout by MaryAnn Perry. Check out the fun way she documented + displayed their Thanksgiving memories on this layout!
MaryAnn used Design E and simply cut one of the 6×6 sections from the rest, making sure to keep 2 holes for placing in her album. On the back side of this, she stores a DVD that goes along with their Thanksgiving memories. (That is a self-adhesive disk holder from Avery.)
MaryAnn says, “Because neither of my little girls can write yet I decide to record a video of them discussing the things that they are thankful for. It turned out so cute and I wanted to include it in my album with the rest of the my thankful cards so I burned the video to a DVD. I used some of the digital paper from the cobalt collection and made a label for the DVD. I added a Cathy Z brush to the front of the DVD.”
…..
Layout by Michelle Wooderson. Notice how she added little touches of different papers by simply punching circles and adding those. Such a great way to soften the bold colors that are part of the Turquoise Edition for her personal style.
…..
Layout by Monica McNeill. Look how easy it is to add “extras” in the rings, just like the Photo Pocket Pages. She simply punched holes in the little envelope to add. The right side of this layout (behind the 8.5 x 11 insert) is utilizing the Design B Photo Pocket Page for Monica’s vertical pictures. The smaller 3×4 pockets are perfect for the little extras. They don’t always have to be used for 3×4 Journaling Cards.
No matter what you believe or don’t believe, part of cultivating a good life is just being a good person – plain and simple. Obviously there are good people doing good things everywhere – regardless of age, race, or religion. I hope that everyone can benefit from even a teeny tiny part of this post, even if you don’t celebrate Christmas. Another part of cultivating a good life is respecting the right that we all have to believe and worship as we choose. I know we are all so grateful for this freedom and privilege and blessing.
That said, we are now in the Christmas season. I am a Christian, and many of you are Christian … so I wanted to share with you some very tangible ways that we can all stay focused on what really matters during this time. There is far too much attention on the commercial side of things, far too much focus on stuff that doesn’t matter. Far too much unnecessary stress. Today I am sharing some thoughts on how we can strive to stay focused on what Christmas is all about.
1. Quiet time to stay focused. One of the most important ways we can start each day is soaking up the stillness of the morning. Trust me, I really struggle with being consistent with this because I often go to bed way too late. But when I prioritize waking up a few minutes early to pray, study the scriptures, meditate, ponder, etc. I am not only getting started on the right foot for that day, but I am blessing my family. What I mean is – I am more spiritually prepared for the day. I am “fed” and nurtured by putting God first in my day. As a wife and mother and leader in our home, I need to put first things first in order to best serve my family.
2. Nativities as play things. My friend Aimee says “We love nativities. We have a few that are specifically for kids so they can touch, hold, arrange, play, etc. I LOVE it when my kids sit and look and play with all the characters of the nativity.” My friend Lydia does something similar. They have nativity dress-up clothes to act out the story of the birth of Christ every Christmas. Instead of reserving these items for that one occasion, she leaves the basket of clothes out and accessible throughout the holiday season and her kids love dressing up and talking about the story.
3. Christmas morning tradition. Aimee also shared that before they open presents their family gathers around the Christmas tree and they share testimonies first. This means that they share expressions of gratitude, and remind one another about what they believe, and why they celebrate Christmas.
4. Involve the kids in service. Sure, it’s easier to just do things ourselves most of the time, but what does that teach the children? My friend Sydney says that she makes sure her kid are involved in actually handing the canned food over for a canned food drive, going up to the door when delivering treats or neighbor gifts, being involved in choosing or making gifts for their teacher, etc. One of our family’s favorite memories ever was “doorbell ditching” a family, where we left boxes of wrapped presents at their front door. The anticipation of tip-toeing up to the front door (in the rain) and deciding when was the right moment to ring the doorbell, and then sprinting off into the darkness so that we wouldn’t get caught? Truly a priceless memory for our kids. It wouldn’t have been the same if it were just mom + dad “running an errand”.
5. Learn about Jesus. He is the reason for the season, after all. To be sure that they are continually learning about the Savior, my friend Lydia does this with her young family (but it’s also applicable/adaptable for those without kids): Each day in December they focus on one characteristic or aspect of the life of Jesus. This is usually very casual and very short & sweet as they sit around the table for dinner. One day might be “Jesus is the Light of the World” and they read a related scripture and sing a song and light candles. Another day might be “Jesus calmed the sea” and another day might be “Jesus wants me to be thankful”.
6. Random acts of service. Each day throughout the season, my friend Melanie and her family are sure to do at least one small act of kindness for another – usually someone who is not expecting it. I’ve been inspired to do the same and have been enjoying this so much already. For example, Melanie’s kids called their aunt on her birthday and sang to her. They paid for the car behind them in the drive-through. They put a note and candy in the mailbox for their mail man. There are so many small ways to brighten someone else’s day.
7. What gifts will we give? Brandi and her family focus on how the 3 wise men brought gifts to Jesus when he was born and this turns into a discussion of what “gift” they can give to the Savior in the coming year. For example, one child will try hard to be a peacemaker. Another wants to work on saying their prayers. And so on. My friend Andrea does this as well and they put their written-down gifts inside a little ornament box on the tree and read them the following year. My friend Tresure does a similar thing in her family. Each family member writes their “gift” on a piece of paper and they all put their thing in a box, which is then wrapped and tied with a pretty bow. That gift sits on a shelf where the whole family can see it all year long, and it serves as a reminder. My sister-in-law Melinda shared that in their family, the kids each choose carefully 3 of their good toys that they will give to another child that is not as fortunate.
8. Books. There are endless Christmas books available and sooo many good ones! My friend Carrie shared with me that in their family, they are sure to read a Christmas book every night during the holiday season. Specifically, they choose books that include touching stories about the true spirit of Christmas. They discuss how the characters in the stories have done Christlike acts, and it motivates them to do the same.
9. Charitable acts. Sometimes charity comes in the form of money. One of my brothers and his wife started a new tradition in their family last year after their dear friends lost their little daughter to cancer. Instead of buying gifts for neighbors and colleagues they decided to give a lump sum of money to St. Jude’s. They, and their children, are reminded during that process of how blessed they are to be healthy, and to be together. My brother has survived cancer twice now, and I know how much this means to their family.
10. Advent calendar. Another brother and sister-in-law have a twist on their advent calendar. There is still a little treat for the kids for each day, but there is also a scripture for the day; a reminder to follow Christ’s example and do as He would do.
11. Set the tone early. David’s sister Debbie and her husband are sure to have a dedicated “Family Night” at the very beginning of the Christmas season. Here they talk about the true meaning Christmas before all the hoopla starts and the commercialism sets in. They read the story of Christ’s birth from the Bible, act out the story, etc. My friend Tina does this but instead of keeping it to just their family, they invite lots of friends to come over as they put on a whole Christmas program. They all sing together and Tina says that they have had very touching experiences and very fond memories from doing this each year.
12. Skip the shopping. My sister-in-law Heidi said that as a child, every night in December her mom would read them a Christmas story. One of those stories was For the Man who Hated Christmas (which sounds awful, but you really need to read it to understand – it’s a quick read and very touching). Heidi said, “When my dad was battling pancreatic cancer, my younger sister came up with the BEST Christmas present for my dad. Each of our families would do our own service project. We would write it up with a picture and stick it in a white envelope. During the night of Christmas Eve, we would each sneak over to their home and place the envelope on the Christmas tree. Since that Christmas eight years ago, we have continued to do this. There is no exchange of physical gifts. Instead, my parents spend Christmas day opening up each letter to read the service project that was done in their honor. It is much harder to arrange a service project for your family than it is buy a gift. It takes time, planning, patience and a lot of work. This work falls on me as a mother. However, the blessings we have received as a family are priceless.”
As we try to stay focused on keeping the spirit of Christmas in our hearts and homes, may we develop habits that will carry with us throughtout the year. Please feel free to share your thoughts and experiences on what you do in your own life and home, and with your family.
The following are notes from individuals and families who have generously donated to my brother's family. There are many others who donated beyond the notes you see below and the ads you see on my blog. We can not thank you enough for your kindness and generosity during this very difficult time. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

All I can say is that I believe God has heard your call because He certainly placed it on my heart to respond. It was loud and clear. And when He's involved, great things far beyond what you and I can comprehend will occur and I pray that gives you peace today and the days to come.
- Peggy Krantz
May you continue to find peace and comfort knowing you are surrounded by loving family and friends.

My heart is filled with love and pain and gratitude for eternal families as I have read about the challenge your family faces. Sometimes courage is that small voice at the end of the day that says 'I will try again tomorrow' " - Mary Anne Radmacher - The last year has been really difficult for me, but this quote always seems to help. I hope it helps you and your family, as well. Don't forget, miracles really do happen. Hang in there and keep your chin up.
- Love and prayers from NM, Stephanie Taylor
To Jonathan, Tina and your entire family: I wish there were more that I could do to help you. Becky's books have been my favorites since I first read them.
