Thanks for your advice on backing up photos online. Backup is uploading and has been for 2 days. I am excited and very relieved as I have spent 3 months sorting and scanning photos, negatives etc. I wish I had known earlier how to organise better but all is good. Once again thanks for your advice, and my husband has saved all the questions to print out and read in peace. He was very impressed.

I had emailed Becky a correction for her post! She told me to post a comment!! So any of you who were interested in the One-To-One or Training Classes that Apple Offers. What she posted was a little incorrect. The apple store has free workshops, but they are more like group sessions & they're on a specific topic. It's one-to-one sessions are not free. That's a paid service for $99 for a year to be able to come into those sessions. And it can only be purchased at the time of purchasing an apple computer. As a former Apple Employee just wanted everyone to have the correct information!!!! I know how frustrating it is for the customer to be misguided!

{ "The other recommendation I have is that once you have some of the basics down, schedule an appointment with your local Apple store to go in for further help. Those guys are really, really good at spending quality time with you helping you to understand the ins and outs of your questions. It’s a one-on-one session, and best of all… it’s free!" }

An add on techie question for Kevin for next time....

I've used a Mac now since the summer of last year...love every single thing about it, except for one thing. Hidden files!!! Photo storage/importing/exporting in iPhoto in terms of backing up is a confusing topic for me.

I use Elements 10 for all of my editing and take a lot of photos of both my own 4 kids and friends' children. I have a LOT of photos. Ok, here I will admit...I currently have 42,800 or so photos on my Macbook Pro.

Using a PC in the past, my process included transferring my photos from my camera to my computer in a folder system using years/months. Every month, I would make a copy of the previous month of photos onto a DVD and then put another copy onto 2 external hard drives. This for me, felt like a safe system.

Now, I am ashamed to admit I have not got a back up of anything new taken since beginning to use my Mac...I just can't figure it out. Exporting is confusing and I can't seem to find the "secret" place on my Mac to just find the photos to move older ones out. I like the comment this past week about what you do in terms of keeping the latest photos on your computer and moving the others. Sounds like a silly question, but move the others how? I would love to know your process because I keep searching the forums and every place has a different suggestion so it seems. Some say to do something along the lines of reassigning the automatic format which iPhoto uses for sorting them, but with the warning to back up your photos first. I can't figure out an easy way to just make a copy.

I am so confused that I am going to pick up an extra hard drive and use Time Machine. I tried using it to do a whole back up but because the hard drive I had did have a number of things on it (1TB hard drive with less than 100G of data on it and my computer currently has a 250G hard drive, so I knew it would "fit").

But, knowing and admitting I have way, way too many photos on my laptop for the everyday, I don't know the best solution of how to get the older ones off and onto a hard drive. I love the way iPhoto organizes events, and I think what confuses me as a newer Mac user is that I don't know how to take them out of iPhoto....do I lose the structure forever? (i.e.: Faces...love that just to name one thing).

Sorry for the length of this question, but I have seen things similar asked before, but never quite the question that answers my dilemma. I am so desperate I would pay for a consultation!!! Or make a donation to your favorite charity!

Thank you so very much for techie Fridays!

Thanks for all the advice, tips, Kevin!
I read your comment about DVDs... and was wondering... do you not make DVDs of your home videos? I have all my videos stored on my iMac but don't have a blu-ray burner and have been struggling with whether or not to buy software to make blu-ray/HD DVDs. With the Apple TV, can I just watch these videos on my TV IN HD?? Thanks! :)

This is such a great article! I absolutely love the step by step instructions you give. Also, the questions you address are ones I sometimes never knew I had but once you answer them I have ah-hah moments.

I second the person who recommends BackBlaze. Mozy's price went way up. Also, Carbonite slowed my computer. I have not noticed that at all with Backblaze. Just fyi.

Thanks again for sharing all your expertise.

Here's what I recommend for off-site, automatic backups... mac or PC: Backblaze. Takes a little while to get the initial copy out there, but fabulous! Another feature that made it work for me is that it allows an external drive to be included, and that's where my iPhoto photo library is stored. Simple setup, cheap monthly cost... and easier sleeping at night knowing that everything is backed up! (Note, iCloud is NOT a backup in a true backup sense...) Mozy changed their pricing but I believe had similar options as BackBlaze. Happy Backups!!

And thanks for all the info, Kevin!

Hey Kristin. I can certainly understand why that would be frustrating. I rely so heavily on email, that to have it not sync up properly, would be a huge pain for me.

Could you do me a favor and head over to my site (www.kevinallgaier.com) and let's start an email dialog? I'd love to help you out, and that's probably the easiest way.

Thanks!

Love me some Tech Friday!
Couple questions/frustrations I have and don't know how to fix (have iMac and iPhone):
1)email: When I read or delete emails on my iPhone, they are also marked as read or deleted on my iMac. However, if I do these things (delete email) on my iMac they are not automatically deleted on my iPhone so I have to duplicate the effort AGAIN on my iPhone. Must be an easier way!!

2)iMac mail is set up to sync with me to email account (yahoo & hotmail). However, if I open iMac mail, it permanently moves my emails out of my yahoo & hotmail inboxes so I can no longer access them through though individual sites. Yet, if I try to use the iMac email program, I no longer have all my folders available and can only see what the program has brought into the iMac email system. I hate using apple mail program for these reasons. Must be something I can do so the inboxes are seamless. Make sense?

Thanks so much for any guidance you can provide!!

OK, I have a question. I love the Instagram app (Android version) and use it a lot, but I would use it a lot more if my photos weren't automatically shared. I didn't know there was an option to keep them private - can you tell me how?

On Apple products (don't know if it's the same for Android) when you open instagram tap the icon in the bottom right corner (looks like a rectangle badge thingy). You can scroll to the bottom and make sure that "photos are private" is turned on. Also go into "Edit sharing settings" and make sure all those options are NOT selected.

I love instagram but have never shared directly from the app. Mostly because I take about 20 shots of the same thing or save the same pic with many different filters before figuring out which one I actually want. If I decided to share a pic I just do it directly from FB or Twitter.
