Happy New Week! We recently received an email from my mom that I swear was written like a blog post! It’s a fantastic tip, and naturally I love sharing tips with you guys. So in my mom’s own words, here you go:
…..
I learned a trick about a great way to fix corn on the cob and NOT have those annoying silks attached!
1) Buy your fresh corn on the cob.
2) Put ‘as is’ in the microwave. 2 ears takes 8 minutes. Cooking 2 at a time is just perfect.
3) They will be HOT so use mitts to take out of microwave.
4) With a SHARP KNIFE cut the end off making sure you cut completely through the cob.
5) SLIDE the whole corn out of husk sleeve.
PERFECTLY done and no silks! It really works….try it!!
Love, Mom (Dad took the pictures)
…..
On a completely separate occasion, Mom decided to whip out a few of her hand-crocheted washcloths specifically for a couple of YOU. I know. She’s so cute. No, she doesn’t sell these. She just loves, loves, loves needlecraft of all kinds – and loves making gifts for others just as much.
Just in time for the 4th of July celebration here in the U.S. next week, 2 of you will win the one on the left. She also will happily ship the other fun, summery ones to 2 of you who live outside the U.S.
For a chance to win, all you have to do is leave your first name, city, state/country and we will randomly select and announce the 4 winners at the bottom of this post first thing Tuesday morning. My mom will personally ship the packages this week. Cutest mom ever.
…..
{ winnners }
Added early Tuesday morning: Congratulations to the following! Please email brandi@beckyhiggins.com and give Brandi your shipping address so that we can pass the information along to my mom and you can get your goodies in the mail soon!

What a funny coincidence! Just last week my mom-in-law met a woman in the grocery store while picking out ears of corn who gave her these exact cooking instructions! She raved about how easy it was and how delicious the corn tasted cooked this way – as did my mom-in-law after she tried it. We tried it this weekend, and it’s true: it’s the easiest way to cook it (no fussing with the silk AT ALL) and it was delicious & tender!! I even preferred the taste over grilled corn, which was my favorite…until now! Try it everyone – you won’t be disappointed!
p.s How fun that your mom & dad took pictures for a visual tutorial – love it!

Great tip! I have never tried to slide it right out like that. I have taken the fresh corn with husk, cut the ends off and then put them in freezer bags (without heating). Freeze and when you need them, take a bag, open just a little end of the zip part, and microwave about 8 minutes on one side then flip and microwave about 4 minutes (give or take). I don’t know if the corn will slide out but taking husk off is very easy because the silks are wet and come right off.

Your mom is a cutie and also a sweetie. Thanks so much for sharing this tip. I cook just for my DH and myself so we cook two corns. I always figured there had to be an easier way to clean/cook corn than the way I do it. 8 minutes will do it for us. Cute wash clothes, too.

A patient in our medical office makes potholders for the staff. One of the cardiologist on staff is single and had to ask me what the gift was. He doesn’t cook so it there’s a collection of potholders gathering on his desk. I giggle everytime I walk by and see them. Never thought to use them as a washcloth. Awesome idea–will definately share this with the doc. Thanks Becky’s mama!

Hi there
I love that your mom showed us her corn cooking tip, I can see now where you get your photographic skills from plus your talent for recording and passing on the little things in life that make us who we are. Thank you both.
I have recently been drawn to crochet ( maybe as I age not sure, it was something my grandmother loved but I didn’t care for until more recently ) I really love it and want to take lessons. Your mom might just be the motivation I was looking for…

Just made the corn for dinner.

I will never make corn any other way.
Thanks SO much, Becky’s mom.
Just tried this little trick and am truly amazed! I did have a little trouble getting the corn to start out of its place. Kind of squeezed on the opposite end and it finally worked. Once I got it started it was very easy. Thanks, Becky’s mom.
