Our exciting week continues – and I want to thank everyone for your comments, support, enthusiasm, and there have even been a few concerns. I consider all of the feedback to be valuable. Before I dig into today’s fun stuff, just a quick blanket statement: With the 2 new partnerships announced, please keep in mind that David and I don’t take decisions like this lightly. We have worked way too hard the past few years.
Our decisions were made based on a lot of factors. One of the major factors is the constant customer requests for more Project Life and more options – and more availability. Another factor is that David and I can only do so much. We have a small but amazing team. In order for us to bring more Project Life to the world, it’s not a matter of just hiring more people. Trust me. Going that route and trying to do more by building up our own team exponentially could have a potentially detrimental affect on our health and family.
All that said, we are completely thrilled with these 2 new partnerships because they will help us meet customer demands. This is the key point I want to make: The simplicity of Project Life as a system remains in tact. I still stand by the theory that all you need to complete a scrapbook is a binder + big pack of photo pocket pages + a Project Life Core Kit (plus your photos and a pen). That’s not changing. But for those who want more options to build upon that (which we have discovered happens to be many of you) … we are so happy to be able to offer more options. That’s what these 2 new partnerships bring – options.
If you fit in that category (as so many do – including myself) that you want to create scrapbooks simply and without all the extra stuff, that program remains – and will continue to remain – as it is. You don’t have to pay an ounce of attention to anything else we’re doing. Just keep on keeping on. This is the beautiful thing about scrapbooking. To each her own. Something for everyone. : )
Now on to TODAY’S exciting stuff …
…..

We have a little tradition of providing FREE holiday digital templates each year. You love it. We love it. Everyone wins. The really fun part is that we have opened this up to YOU. Have some design skills? We would LOVE you to submit a holiday card template design! The top 10 winning designs will each receive $100 cash! Need a clue as to what we have done in the past? Check out THIS blog post from a couple years ago and that will give you an idea.
Before I get into the nitty-gritty that you would need to know, I want to let you in on a little secret: You are now aware that 2013 will bring about more Project Life, which means more designs and more editions … which means I want to discover more designers that could potentially work with me on Project Life! So if you are interested in getting “noticed” to possibly be considered for a Project Life design gig, I highly recommend you submit to this Holiday Card Design Contest. How fun is that!?
…..
Submission Guidelines
1. Each design must be submitted in three sizes – 4″x6″, 5″x7″, and 6″x7.5″ (same design, just formatted in 3 sizes).
2. Files must be saved as 300 dpi PNG files.
3. You must leave a blank space where the photo(s) is to be placed. The photo(s) should be prominent in the design.
4. You must name your files in this format: LastFirst_2012ChristmasCard_size.png [ i.e. WhitlockLori_2012ChristmasCard_4x6.png ]
5. All artwork must be original art. You may NOT use any paper or embellishments from digital kits.
6. The orientation can be either horizontal or vertical.
7. You may include the year 2012 somewhere in the design if you’d like. But, keep in mind that if your design is chosen, we’ll retire your design after the 2012 holiday season if it includes the year.
8. As for style, well … that’s up to you. You’re the designer. But, I’ll give you a tip on what will likely stand out to me personally: Clean and uncluttered. Obviously we want to end up with 10 unique designs so that everyone has plenty to choose from so do what suits your style best.
9. The deadline for submissions is November 7 at 12:00 midnight PST; that’s next Wednesday.
10. No more than two design submissions per person.
11. Email submissions to submissions@beckyhiggins.com and be sure to tell us your full name, location (city/state/country), and link us to your blog or website if you have one so that we can get more glimpses of you and your work.
12. If your submission doesn’t meet all the requirements above, it will not be considered.
…..
Here are a few more things worth noting:
1. Who’s who. I have no rules about who you are and whether or not we know each other. This is open to everyone. So whether you happen to be a personal friend or if you’ve never even heard of me before today, whether you live in the U.S. or the other side of the world … you have equal chances. I just want the coolest cards to share with my readers and my bias is only about the design itself. : )
2. Tell your friends! Know a great designer who may not be aware of this contest? Encourage him/her to consider entering this contest. Spread the word, because that’s how we’ll get the best designs.
3. Fonts. Please be mindful of copyrights. Your safest bet is to use generic fonts like the Arials, Helveticas, Geogias, etc. Be sure to save your layered files for any slight changes you may be asked to make.
4. Holiday terms. We will ultimately want to represent a variety of phrases in our final designs – Christmas, Holiday, Hanukkah, Merry, Kwanzaa, whatever. Take your pick, using any phrasing that best suits your design, or leave words off altogether if you choose.
5. You get to vote! For the first time ever, we are going to involve YOU – our readers – in deciding the top 10 holiday cards this year! After narrowing down our favorites, we will create an album on facebook for everyone to cast their vote for their favorites and that’s how we’ll come up with the final 10. Stay tuned for more information, which will be around November 9. We’ll keep it simple and easy, and give you a few days to vote.
…..
I seriously can’t wait to see what you come up with! Good luck!

See what I mean!? Yesterday’s announcement about our partnership with Amercian Crafts was so much fun, so well-received, and we are soooo thankful for your positive feedback and support! Like we said – that was just the beginning.
Any of you who already love Studio Calico are probably freaking out over today’s announcement of another partnership full of awesomeness. If you don’t happen to know about Studio Calico, I’ll gladly introduce you.
What is Studio Calico?
I’m going to let the ever-so-lovely brains behind Studio Calico explain in her own words. Go HERE and click on the little video icon in the bottom right corner. It’s less than 3 minutes long. That’s April Foster. She is awesome. April and I share such a similar passion for how we are running our respective businesses and how we are able to reach different scrapbookers. Which is why this collaboration is even more beautiful. She gets it. I get it. This is a match made in heaven, right?
When will we see the first Project Life kit from Studio Calico?
The first kit will ship the first week of January 2013.
What do the Project Life kits contain?
Each month the kit will include cards in a variety of sizes, a high-quality photopolymer stamp set, and many other embellishments such as decorative clips, washi tape, badges, stickers, die cuts – and much more. What’s fun is that each monthly kit is a compilation of designs and goodies from several different companies. Studio Calico is brilliant about bringing random stuff together perfectly. Everything will work beautifully with the Project Life pocket-based system.
How do I subscribe? What does it cost? How long does it last? Can I get it if I’m outside the U.S.?
There are inevitably so many great questions and I want you to feel well-informed. Studio Calico is going to be best at explaining all the nitty-gritty. More information is outlined HERE (and be sure to check out the Studio Calico blog too). If your questions are not answered there, you can contact Studio Calico HERE or email them at info@studiocalico.com.
How do I get on the waiting list?
Go HERE, my friend.
I love the simplicity of Project Life. Why would I want to add more “stuff”?
I designed Project Life to be a solution … a time-saver … a money-saver. My whole philosophy centers around the idea that you don’t need all the stuff in order to create beautiful scrapbooks. You don’t need to spend so much time on a layout. I still believe that with all my heart, and I continue to preach it to the world. ; )
But here’s the fun thing that I’ve noticed in my 3 years of doing this: The Project Life system appeals to all sorts of people. Absolutely this simple approach to memory-keeping appeals to those who need to keep it simple (they’re new to scrapbooking – or they’re overwhelmed – or they don’t have time – or they don’t feel creative – or they appreciate ultra-simple – or you name it). But we have noticed that Project Life also appeals to those who love to spend a little extra time on their scrapbooks.
We think that any way that you approach memory-keeping is splendid. Simple or elaborate. Fully designed pages or the slip-your-photos-in-pockets system. Mini albums or 12×12. Whatever floats your boat! Don’t feel pressure to do it one way or another. Do it how you love it and do what works for you in this stage of life. Just do something. If you love to add the extra flavor to your Project Life albums, you will love the Project Life kit by Studio Calico.
…..
Be sure to follow Studio Calico on facebook and twitter if you’re not already.
And yes – just when you thought this week couldn’t get more fun, the party continues tomorrow. And the next day. And the next day. Yeehaw!

It is with great delight that I announce to you that we have teamed up with American Crafts so that Project Life can now be available in stores nationwide, and all over the world. We have already had a lot of fun working together since entering into an agreement and I have to say - very exciting things are in the works. More Project Life, more possibilities, more visibility, and more availability.
American Crafts has been one of my very favorite scrapbooking companies since my earliest days of being a part of this industry (about 15 years ago), and there is so much awesomeness to come out of combining our strengths with theirs. As with any big announcement, I am sure there are questions. Please understand that with a little time, we will be equipped to share more information and more details. For now, these are the main points you should know:
CONSUMERS: Yes, our products are still currently on Amazon – and we will continue to keep Project Life available direct-to-consumer. Now you’ll also have the option of walking into your local craft or scrapbooking store and finding Project Life right there on the shelf so you can check it out in person. If you want your local store to carry our products, tell them to contact American Crafts.
RETAILERS: So many of you have been asking to sell Project Life the past few years and we were never equipped to handle a wholesale portion of the business in our infancy. This partnership with American Crafts now makes it possible, as they have the team, the resources, and the infrastructure to make it happen (hallelujah). If you are interested in carrying our products in your store, contact an American Crafts sales representative at 800-879-5185, sales@americancrafts.com, or fill out the form here.
Speaking of retailers, everyone outside of the U.S. who has ordered our products knows how much we love Craft House (out of New Zealand) and Scrapbooker’s Inner Circle (out of Canada) and Scraplicious (out of SE Asia), as they have made it possible for Project Life to be available worldwide from the beginning. I’m pleased to tell you that these existing distributors will continue to offer Project Life.
EVERYONE: I haven’t set foot on a trade show floor in years, and I’m pleased to announce that this partnership is putting me back in the CHA scene in January. If you are planning to attend that show in Anaheim, I would be honored if you stopped by the Becky Higgins/Project Life booth #2628. Yes, I am still overseeing the design and development of all Project Life products. In fact – thanks to this partnership, I’ll now be able to develop MORE (so, so, so many ideas that I want to see come into fruition). Project Life will continue on as the simple, solution-based system we all love.
TIMING: It is anticipated retail-ready product will begin shipping in April 2013. Click HERE to download the official news release PDF.
…..
Oh, but that’s not all. Oh no. We have another big announcement tomorrow! And the fun won’t stop there either. Check in each day this week. So much good stuff. Please know that while we’re so excited about this week on the blog, we are very aware of what’s looming in the eastern U.S. Hurricane Sandy is undoubtedly going to affect so many of you reading this, and I want you to know I’m praying for your safety.

{ Loving This no. 1: Grid Cards }
A box of 100 Grid Cards is something every Project Lifer should have on hand. I mean, technically it’s not a MUST-have like the 3 key ingredients to complete an album are (Binder + Core Kit + Big Pack of Photo Pocket Pages) … but … they’re pretty darn handy for a million reasons. Besides actually using them for journaling anecdotes, captions, and stories to go in our Project Life albums, they’ve been utilized by my kids for many things. Writing on them while we travel, doodling on them to stay reverent during church, and even flash cards for school!

3×4 Grid Cards shown here. I even keep David’s honey-do list on 4×6 Grid Cards. True story.
…..
{ Loving This no. 2: 6×12 Page Protectors }
This item is so very handy for any of your taller items that don’t need a full 12 inches of width in the scrapbook. Programs, ribbons, kids’ art, pamphlets, playbills, greeting cards, and in this case … Claire’s latest booklets. There are limitless possibilities with the 6×12 Page Protectors that any scrapbooker would just love. Remember: You can always cut off the top edge if you don’t want the full 12″ height.

Designer Paper is from the upcoming Olive Edition.
…..
{ your turn }
What about you? Which Project Life items are just GEMS to you right now, outside of those 3 essentials that are necessary to complete an album? Is it the little boxes of Textured Cards? A certain Photo Pocket Page design? Are you loving the Month Dividers or the empty Organizational Tray to keep all your random Project Life cards nice and neat? Are the Envelope Pages helping keep your precious memorabilia safe and organized? I’d love to hear about your favorite.
And of course you know we’re all ears about your Project Life wish list. Always.

Photographs are windows to our memory. Reflections of our life. Reminders of our blessings. Each Wednesday we feature 5 personal favorite photos from a Creative Team member or a friend. These 5 photos will remind of us why photography is so beautiful and why documenting the everyday is so important. The goal is to leave us all a little more inspired to cultivate a good life and record it.
Our inspiration this week comes from Creative Team member Michelle Wooderson.

My 5 favorite photos are of the wonderful, fresh produce that came from our garden this Summer. Living in a small farm community means that a harvest of any sorts is a big deal. Whether it be the bushels of corn that comes from my dad’s big fields or the green beans and peppers that are picked daily out of our gardens, a good harvest is worth celebrating.
Fall is here now. The leaves have all changed colors and the trees are almost bare. Mother Nature is preparing the earth for it’s long winter’s nap. Each time I come across these colorful photos I am reminded of the hot Summer we had this year and how each and every garden picking was such a blessing. There is nothing more rewarding than planting a garden in the Spring, seeing those first seedlings sprout and then enjoying the fresh vegetables every night at the dinner table. Coming from a long generation of women who like to can foods, I am especially fond of the photo of my freshly canned jars of salsa. This photo takes me right back into the hot kitchen, with large pots of boiling water, my family sitting around the table cutting up vegetables and my mom and I in our aprons. Having photos that evoke these kinds of memories is really the reason why I take photos and preserve them in my scrapbooks. As the seasons change quickly it seems, these types of photos have to be taken just at the right moment. If you have seasonal memories you want to capture, don’t wait too long. Capture those veggies when they are at their peak of ripeness, take a photo of your favorite flowers while they are in full bloom, snap a photo of the beautiful leaves on the trees before they are gone.
Looking ahead to the holiday season, these moments will pass quickly also. We seem to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives, but don’t forget to pick up the camera. Be sure to capture that glistening turkey on the dinner table, the first time you light a crackling fire, the sunset over the lake, that first snowfall with your kids making snow angels. It may not seem so unimportant right now because we can remember these short term happenings. But as the years go by we will be so happy we have these photos.

Watch this. Really – you have to watch this.
Okay – now. What are you feeling? Pay attention to what you are feeling.
If this little video makes you want to subscribe to Seeing the Everyday, then great. Mission accomplished. I’m sure they’ll be happy to know that. Without a doubt – I whole-heartedly LOVE this publication as one of my all-time favorites. Ever, ever, ever. And I think you’d enjoy it too, times a million.
But if that’s all you’re feeling, you missed something. I doubt that’s all you’re feeling right now. Right?
Perhaps you’re feeling something you need to change about your role in a particular relationship. Perhaps you feel prompted to write a note to your parents. Maybe you are motivated to pick up your camera more and capture everyday-ness in your life. Maybe you got the feeling you need to be staring at this monitor less and get on the floor (or at the sink) with your children. Or maybe you are feeling reminiscent to a time in your younger years or when your babies were … babies.
Pay attention to that feeling. Absorb it. And then … act on that prompting you feel. That prompting to do something. To stop doing something. To say something. It’s going to be personal for each of us. Isn’t that beautiful?

NOTE: Right-click on the image to download and save to your computer.
We’ve seen this floating around on Pinterest and in a few other places and thought that this is something you might enjoy as well. There is a site called The Keep Calm-o-matic where you can turn any phrase into one of the keep calm graphics. Above is a 3×4 PNG file, or if you prefer to just print a standard 4×6, below is a JPG file with 2 side-by-side – all ready to print.
No matter where you are in your journey to document life, kudos to you for making that effort to do something special with the memories, the pictures, the stories of your life. Don’t feel discouraged if you’re not able to do it as much as you’d like – or as creatively as you’d like. Just the very idea that you value memory-keeping at all is such a gift. Tap into that desire and run with it however you can in this phase of your life.
And remember – Project Life was developed out of my deep, deep desire to SIMPLIFY the process of scrapbooking. Slip the photos and journaling cards into pockets. That’s it. If you need a little refresher on how to “calm down” your own approach, please be sure to check out my Getting Started slideshow – and a short article called Project Life in its most Basic Form.

Our inspiration this week comes from Creative Team member Sheri Horton. Here are some of her favorite tips-in her own words.
…..
I have always loved photos, but it wasn’t until the birth of my first daughter that I truly became interested in photography. I was happily taking lots of photos and documenting our story. I was doing okay and felt I was capturing all the important things. Then in 2009, after the birth of my second daughter I decided to do photo-a-day. What a life changing experience! It made me realize that up until that point I wasn’t documenting life at all like I should be! It was during that year that I truly fell in love with documenting the everyday moments. I saw the world through my lens in a whole new way! It was no longer about getting that perfect shot, even though I still like to try, but it was about capturing our life as a family.
I know a lot of people say they are capturing their life as a family, but a lot of times I think they forget that they are a part of the family too! It’s so very important that as a mother, you are in the photos!! It does not matter how you look or how you feel about yourself, it’s about leaving a lasting memory for your children. My girls love to see photos of us together. When I say us, I mean them with me and them with their Dad, and even better, they love seeing photos of us as a family. I don’t have a single photo of me as a child with my Mom. It’s not her fault there are no photos, it’s just not something she thought about at the time. Plus, she’ll be the first to admit she doesn’t like having her photo taken. I don’t think most people do when it comes to looking right at the camera and smiling. But those aren’t the pictures I wish I had of us together. The ones I wish I had are the ones where we’re interacting, playing and just being us. Now, I have those photos of her with my girls, which they also love to see. I don’t think she has ever thought about it or given it a second thought, but for me as a mother with two little girls of my own, it’s something I think about all the time! I try my best to ensure that I am in at least one photo a week! You’ve heard it before, but I am here to tell you again…it is important to your kids to have photos of you with them and photos of just you by yourself! Kids like seeing photos of their parents!
There are countless ways you can ensure you’re present in your photos. I am sure you’re well aware of all the ways, but if not, here are some suggestions:
- Hand over your camera to someone else. Yikes!! I know this is hard to do, but do it! I even let my girls who are 3 and 6 years old take pictures!
- Self-timer. Most cameras have them and they are so easy to use. I use mine at least once a week!
- Remote. Mine was less than $20. I used it for the first time last fall when I did our own family photo session! Call me crazy, but it worked and I got some amazing family photos!
- Self-portrait. We’ve all done it at some point. It’s where you turn the camera around and point it at yourself! I think most teenagers these days have perfected this shot!
…..
My girls like tea parties (I think most little girls do)! So when my oldest wanted to have a tea party for her Lalaloopy doll, I said sure and went all out and set up the table, made tea and cookies! I took lots of pictures of them, but eventually I handed the camera over to husband and asked him to take some pictures of me serving the girls tea. I will admit, it’s hard for me to hand control over to him! I sometimes get frustrated that he doesn’t think to take the camera and take pictures of me with them and that I always have to ask. But you know what? He never says no, so I will continue to ask. Maybe one day he’ll surprise me and just do it, but even if he doesn’t, that’s okay. And if I am being honest, I also have to let go of the fact that he is not me and his photos, no matter how much I coach him, will not look like mine! But like I said, that’s okay, because at least he is willing and does his best! I would do anything to have a picture of the little cakes my Mom use to bake for my tea parties with my three brothers and of her serving it to us!
…..
Like many of you, I enjoy doing crafts with my kids. I am sure you have lots of pictures of your kids doing the craft, but what about you sitting there doing a craft of your own or you helping them? This is when the self-timer on your camera comes in handy! I usually find a pile of books to set my camera on, line up the shot and then run to get in the photo. Sometimes I’ll have to do it a couple times to get it just right, but more often I get it with the first try! The key is to not look at the camera and make the picture appear natural. That’s not always easy with little ones. My youngest always wants to look! That’s okay too…just as long as you capture the moment, it doesn’t have to be perfect.
…..
This photo melts my heart. My girls and I are looking at the 2011 photo-a-day book I created. Every so often the girls ask to look at the books or albums I have created. I love that they ask and I am always more than willing to sit down and flip through the books with them. For this shot, I set my camera on the floor and again used my self-timer. I love that by having this perspective, you truly get a sense of us being engaged in looking at the book. I also have to mention this…you’ll notice I am wearing what I call my comfy clothes, a pair of jogging pants and sweater. I wouldn’t go to the grocery store wearing this, but I will photograph myself in it and share it with the world! LOL So like I said earlier, it doesn’t matter how you look, get in those photos!!
…..
When it comes to my husband, he’ll say he’s not in very many photos with the girls, when in actuality he’s in a LOT of photos with them! He’s in some of the really amazing shots I’ve taken! He’s also in a lot of the everyday photos with them. If I find them engaged doing something together I will always run to get my camera. Like this time, when I saw him on his Playbook and our youngest with her blankie sitting on him and then our oldest sitting beside them playing on the iPod. I didn’t take the photo straight on, I got up on my tippy toes and angled my camera downwards. I like this perspective and take a lot of photos this way.
…..
There is nothing better then capturing a family in their element, doing an everyday activity, like having dinner! For this shot, we were enjoying our first dinner outside for the summer season. The sun was actually starting to set (my favorite time to photograph, as I am sure it is for a lot of you….that golden hour) so I decided why not take a picture! For this one, I set my camera on the ledge of our gazebo and again used my trusty self-timer.
When I look through all the photos I’ve taken this year, the photos of me with my girls and of us as a family are what inspire me and make me appreciate this project even more! I encourage you to make an effort to be present in your photos with your family.

As usual with the monthly offering of inspiration from our fabulous Creative Team, I will share just one glimpse from each of their respective Project Life albums. And then – whenever and wherever you want to see more – just click on the person’s name and it will take you to their blog where they each share more details, more information, more pages, more examples of how they’re using Project Life as a memory-keeping system.
We completely adore how each person’s style is so unique – in photography, with their journaling, and how they bring it all together in their albums. As you see how others are doing Project Life, our hope is that you will feel an increased desire to document life, and that you’ll be more in tune with what your own personal style is. No matter how you slice it, it’s all good. It’s your story.
