12 videos of Christmas: no. 8

The maker of this little film? His name is Tom Barger of Hummelstown, Pennsylvania. But he’s not even the one who submitted this to us. Nope. That would be his sister-in-law Bethany Barger who wrote “When I saw your request for the 12 Videos of Christmas I couldn’t resist submitting this one. I am actually not the creator of this video. It was my 22 year old brother-in-law who filmed and created it (what kid does that? I love him). He graduated from college last year and moved a few states away so I have now lost my scrapping buddy :(

First of all, I love that you can tell how much love is in this family. Second of all, with Christmas right around the corner, and so many of you already in transit or in the middle of last-minute plans … this video is a reminder of how wonderful it is to document our celebrations and traditions – and to not forget video! In 2010, while Tom was still in college, he made a little movie he called “A Very Barger Christmas” that was similar to this one. His family all loved it so much that now he is officially designated to put together mini-movies whenever there is a holiday or a trip with the whole family.

Wouldn’t we all love Tom to hang out with our families over Christmas and document the way he does with his family? Better yet – aren’t we all feeling a little more inspired to pull off something like this next week?

Equipment: Tom shot this using only an application on his iPhone called “8mm”. That’s how he got the vintage look. He then edited and put together the mini-movie using iMovie.

Greetings folks! And a Merry Christmas! This is yours truly with some info. First, the song title used is “I won’t grow up” by Upper West. It is obviously a remix from the Mary Martin version of Peter Pan of which I was obsessed with as a kid… and perhaps still today.

For those of you wishing to somewhat replicate what I did, it is the easiest way to use video. Simply record 30 sec-ish clips throughout the day. Be sure to mix up your shots! Close ups, wide shots, on the level of the kids… that’s right! Get down low! Don’t just shoot from the “grown up” perspective. After you have your day or two worth of clips, upload them onto a video editor. I used iMovie. If you own a Mac, you have iMovie. It is very easy to use, but of course may need some time to get used to if you are a first time user.

Pick a song you want to use. Then stitch and trim your video with the music. (try to line it up with beat changes so it looks like you made the video on purpose) In iMovie you can “duck” the sound so that the raw audio from your clips is gone and the song is all you hear. I use this method because sound editing is much more complicated. One other tip… always put 2-3 seconds of black screen before and after your video so that it does not abruptly start and stop.

That’s it! Quick clips of video. Pick a song you like. Then stitch the video clips along with the song… and boom! A quick little memento for folks to enjoy for years to come.

I used to take a bunch of pictures… but in our digital age, no one really did anything with the photos, so I went to movies, and they’ve been a hit since!

Happy Holidays memory makers! And a very sincere thank you for the words of kindness. It really did bring a smile to my face reading them!
