5 photos that inspire: MaryAnn Perry

Wednesday, October 10th, 2012

Photographs are windows to our memory. Reflections of our life. Reminders of our blessings. Each Wednesday we feature 5 personal favorite photos from a Creative Team member or a friend. These 5 photos will remind of us why photography is so beautiful and why documenting the everyday is so important. The goal is to leave us all a little more inspired to cultivate a good life and record it.

Our inspiration this week comes from Creative Team member MaryAnn Perry. Here are some of her favorite tips – in her own words.

…..

Don’t stay in one spot when you take your pictures. Move around and get creative! Challenge yourself to take photos from different angles. By changing the angle in which you take the photo you can change the emotion and feel of the photograph.

When I took this photo I was actually sitting on the floor with my camera tilted upward to get the shot. I wanted to catch the girls looking at their daddy in awe as he told them about his job as a firefighter. The angle of the photo highlighted the emotion on the girl’s faces and emphasized the size contrast between my husband and girls.

 …..

This was a totally random photo I took. I love handwritten notes and letters. I love to write and receive them. I get excited EVERY DAY to go to the mailbox. I know you can email and I know you can email pictures, but there is just something so much more fun about getting them in the mail. I think it is important to include photos of things we do within our everyday lives. We can make it different or more interesting by changing the angle in which we take the photo. In this photo I used a wide-angle lens and got in close to take the picture.

 …..

Include pictures of your loved ones’ favorite hobbies. My husband plays the guitar and we love to hear him play. He is good for the short time that he has been playing and the girls and I recently surprised him with a new guitar. I wanted a photo of him playing… not something posed. For this photo I was on my knees, and had the lens focused on his front hand playing, so when I took the photo the rest of his body blurred slightly.

 …..

This photo is from a pit stop during a recent road trip. The photo was taken at an angle just above my chest… is that technical…. hmmm well I was on my tippy toes…. to get the shot… my husband is really tall. But my point with this photo… is it’s an everyday shot but it tells a lot about my husband and me… It’s our favorite splurge snacks… only the ones reserved for a vacation splurge… that’s important and needs to be documented!

 …..

Get down on their level. This photo was taken of my daughter early in the morning while she was playing with her train set. I was sitting on the ground on the same level that she was playing. This angle allowed me to let her play and still get the picture I wanted…. her playing trains. no cheesy posed shots… a simple reflection of our morning together…

DIY memory game

Monday, April 23rd, 2012

Anyone who has Project Life knows we give you plenty of supplies in that little box. Chances are, you have some extra cards in your stash. Right?

Creative Team member MaryAnn has put her extra cards to excellent use. She whipped up a DIY project that you’re going to want to pin. (No – I’m still not on Pinterest. I’m holding strong, ladies.)

This is a memory game that she made using filler cards from the Amber Edition of Project Life, and the cards are stored in a 3×4 journaling card box. MaryAnn says, When I was a kid I loved to play Memory. I can recall countless hours of fun playing the game with my parents and siblings. I wanted something fun and small to take with us while we are traveling by plane cross country on our summer vacation this year. It’s a twist to the traditional game of memory match-up using family photos.

I have also started working on a Go Fish game using the same concept as the memory game. I love it! The best part about both of these games is that just when my girls think they know all of the cards or have it mastered, I simply switch the photos to more recent ones and totally update the game. Love it! Well … really the best part is the look on the girls faces as the play the game. That is priceless and it just makes my heart smile!

…..

Of course you don’t need to use Project Life 3×4 Journaling Cards. It’s just convenient with those because they’re pre-cut and pre-designed. You can certainly use full sheets of cardstock and trim to your desired size. I did this several years ago and used the same pattern on the back of ALL the cards.

Speaking of creative uses for patterned cardstock … keep your eye on the blog this week for more DIY goodness. We have oodles of fun ideas on the way and I’m certain you’re creative juices will be flowing.

say hello to our first-ever creative team.

Monday, November 14th, 2011

We have put together our first-ever Project Life Creative Team – hooray! In the Products section you will now see a new tab for the Creative Team. This is where you can learn more about each team member and find links to their respective blogs, etc.

Why a Creative Team? Our products are designed to simplify the process of memory-keeping. They are quite self-explanatory and solution-based. However, most of us are “visual”. Once we see something in action, it all clicks. When we see someone else putting their pictures in the Photo Pocket Pages and writing on the Journaling Cards and adding their flair, we naturally become more motivated and inspired to do it our own way.

How did we go about choosing our team members? Since the beginning of Project Life, we have been aware of and very grateful for so many who have shared Project Life with their friends, on their blogs, in galleries and online forums, etc. For the past several months, we have been “watching” online activity to find a handful of Project Lifers whose work inspires us and others. We have a very strong belief that no one’s style is better than the next person’s. When it comes to preserving memories, there is no right or wrong.

Our goal with this Creative Team is to share a variety of styles that will inspire in different ways. A couple of our Creative Team members are very, very minimalist – using just the basics. A couple of them are quite creative with the use of product and often add lots of other products and embellishments and ephemera. And everyone else is somewhere in between. What they have in common is not only a love for using Project Life in their personal life, but they also have a knack for documenting life. They each have their own style of taking pictures and writing memories and this is the core of how we hope they inspire you.

How and when will we get to see their work? In the next month or two you will begin seeing layouts and projects from our Creative Team on a regular basis. We’ll share here on the blog and elsewhere on the website. Stay tuned.

Are we all set with our 2012 team? We feel really good about this group of Project Life artists, and we are so very pleased that they each accepted the invitation with enthusiasm. While we are quite comfortable with this team size, we are certainly open-minded about possibly adding another member or two. We realize that there is amazing inspiration out there, not necessarily shared all over the Internet. Should you feel strongly that you should share your layouts with us (or turn in your friend) … you are welcome to email a few pictures to submissions@beckyhiggins.com. I repeat: We’re not necessarily looking to make the Creative Team larger, but we just don’t want to shut that door and lock it when we know there could be someone else that would be a good fit to add balance + inspiration.

Moving forward. Speaking of being open-minded … as a young company, we’re constantly learning and growing and experimenting. This is our first time trying a Creative Team. We have no idea how this will go but we certainly are grateful for each of these ladies being so willing to share their personal layouts and projects. We sincerely hope that what they/we share will be nothing short of inspirational for you. We anticipate that they’ll carry on with this for 2012. We plan to revise + update the team members toward the end of each year, and keep this up year after year.

……….

{ PS }

Thank you again and again to so many of you who love sharing Project Life with others. We are grateful that it is a solution for you – an easy + enjoyable way to get pictures off the computer and out of drawers and into books that can be enjoyed. We have updated our Project Life button/graphic. Should you be interested in having this on your own blog, you are welcome to use it. You can snag it here. We are very grateful for the Project Life community, and for you.
