I don’t know that I need to say more. They’re Mom’s cookies, so they’re the best. My mom is known for a few things. Counted cross-stitching is one of them. Chocolate chip cookies is another. And it’s no wonder. Everyone loves them. And she makes them all the time. For all sorts of occasions. For every occasion.
MOM’S CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES
2/3 c. shortening
2/3 c. butter (not margarine)
1 c. granulated sugar
1 c. brown sugar, packed
2 eggs
2 tsp. vanilla
3 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1 c. chopped nuts
12 oz. semi-sweet chocolate chips
Mix thoroughly first 6 ingredients. Stir in remaining ingredients. Drop on ungreased baking stone. Bake 8 to 10 minutes at 375 degrees. This is a single recipe which makes about 7 dozen. Mom always makes a double batch.

to BellaMamma…..I thought this recipe sounded familiar, and sure enough it is in my old "Better Crocker's New Boys and Girls Cookbook" seventh printing 1970, copyright 1965 by General Mills, Inc., Minneapolis, Minn. So, no wonder it's a great recipe!
The only difference is that in this cookbook, the ingredients are all half of the recipe on this site.
I don't bake much anymore, because I can't afford (calorie wise) to eat a lot of goodies…am 71 years old (and if they were around, I would eat them!), but I used to make them when my kids were young, and I remember my mother used to make them often.
That this recipe has been around so long that many don't know where it first came from is a testiment as to how good it is!!!
Happy Easter to all,
Leah Kinder
Hi!
I love your blog, and the recipes sound just soo good! And those lovely pictures!
I’ve got a question about this cookie recipe: What is “shortening”? I’m from Germany, and I always thought shortening was butter/margarine- which seems to be wrong since butter is listed seperately in this recipe…
I’d like to try those cookies because I’m still looking for the “perfect chocolate chip cookie recipe”.
All the best from Bielefeld, Germany,
Helen
@ Helen- Shortening is a white paste like cooking oil. I think Crisco is the maine maker of shortening. I use vegetable oil in mine. hope this helps.
Thanks for this recipe – it’s the best one I have ever tried! I can’t get over how easy and great these are!!!
I am posting this recipe on my blog – thanks!

I did try these and they were very good!
Can’t wait to try these. I have a quick question… do you put the baking stone in the oven cold or do you put it in the oven while it’s pre-heating?
I have made these since I was old enough to bake – with one change – we leave out one of the cups of sugar. They are JUST as yummy as the original!
Tried it. Delish!
I tried it too. Thanks for sharing.

Anybody have too cook these a LOT longer than the recipe states so that they aren’t doughy in the center? I have to cook them about 15 min but then the outside is a bit too brown.
My children surely love this recipe. Thank for sharing your chocolate chip cookies recipe.
